IRVING, Texas -- Everybody believes one of the Dallas Cowboys' most pressing needs is safety. Everybody except the Cowboys. The Cowboys liked Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor, the top-rated safeties in the draft, but did not love either, especially when compared to Zack Martin, whom they took with the 16th pick in the first round. The Cowboys could have had either player at No. 16, but stuck with their board. They loved Jimmie Ward, but in the second round.

It wasn't that long ago that players were given a chance to prove themselves. Not these days, in this microwave, Twitter-drunk, hurry-up-or-die world we now live in.

Michael Irvin wasn't awesome out of the gate. Jay Novacek was a Plan B free agent. Darren Woodson didn't start as a rookie. Mark Tuinei was a defensive lineman, Nate Newton was a free agent nobody. I could go on and on about that 90s Cowboys team.

Wilcox, Escobar, Holloman, Johnson, Crawford, Williams, Randle....there's a bunch of guys that could suddenly become impact players next year.

Patience.

Twitter has nothing to do with this. Nor does this hurry-up-or-die world we live in. It's been like this since 2000... when the internet really began to peak. This is just you obtaining the opinions of millions of individuals you otherwise never would have. Stop blaming Twitter and the internet on it. People have always been negative, and no casual fan ever gives a player a chance to blossom.

The logic seems solid. After Dix and Pryor and Ward went off the board (I was not a fan of Buchanon), were the next level of guys that much better than Wilcox? Probably not. Taking a flyer on Dixon in the 7th was smart.

You know we're in the future when we're referencing 2000 as our "back in the day" point.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to slip into my gravity onesie. I'll meet you guys on the moon a quarter 'til 5:00.

That was during an era with no free agency. Teams can't afford to invest a roster spot for three years to develop guys that will leave a year later and go to another team.

Dixon could stick.hes bigger than I thought he was. But he seems like a SS. So caking up Church maybe.

I really do think Wilcox gets better. He had a weird year with the family death, the injury, and just being a rookie.

Matt Johnson is the wildcard. Bigger, faster, stronger, and much more of a center fielder than Dixon and possibly Wilcox. He's supposedly also a natural in Marinelli's system and in the film room.

But who cares if he can't stay on the field. It means almost nothing.

giving guys chances to succeed is good but we never have a backup plan when things dont workout, right now Heath is the backup FS (or maybe Church will play FS which is even dumber plan).

I like JJ Wilcox and think Dallas made the right move in not reaching for a safety.......football is won in the trenches and Martin will have more impact on this team than a safety

IMO, the Jerry and co. have made enough of an investment in the S position. Lets see what the youngsters can do.

I hope that is coming from Marinelli and Kiffin who now something about defense and not from anyone else in the organization.
