Cowboys mini mailbag
September, 16, 2010 Sep 169:38AM CTEmail Print Comments By Calvin .. Most of you are still upset about the Commanders game. So, it’s time to move forward and think big picture. We start about a possible trade at running back.
Q: With the Packers needing a running back do you see [Tashard] Choice or [Marion] Barber being traded? Corey Brantley (Conway, S.C.)
A: No. The Cowboys like Felix Jones and Barber as a 1-2 punch and believe Choice is a solid No. 3. There’s a strong chance the Cowboys will let Barber go after this season and this is where Choice will get more carries. The health of Jones and Barber has been a question the last two years. It looks good this year, so far. But if injuries popup, Choice is the insurance policy.
Q: When will Jerry Jones realize [Wade] Phillips is not the answer as a coach and [Jason] Garrett is not head coaching for offensive coordinator material. Why won’t Jerry get a veteran offensive line or safety help because this is not Super Bowl material? Steve (Milwaukee)
A: It’s funny how people say Wade Phillips isn’t a head coach anymore after just one game in 2010. Last season, Phillips was able to do something no coach had done around here in over 10 years and that’s win a playoff game. Granted the team wasn’t ready to play on Sunday night, that’s Phillips’ fault. There were too many mistakes, especially on the mental end, that concern me. .... but it’s all about execution.
Q: Hi, Calvin. I follow your stories religiously! I always look for you for the current Cowboys scoops. It's frustrating. The Cowboys are so talented at every position. After a loss in Week 1, no less, maybe it’s time just to get back to basics. If the Cowboys had given either Marion Barber or Felix Jones 20-25 carries and the other running back 10-15 carries, there is no way the Cowboys lose to the Commanders. It was obvious from the first series that pass protection was an issue, so why not just let the running backs and offensive line let loose and simply give them a chance to run downhill? A winnable game is now a one in the loss column. Even if they called for Tashard Choice to carry the ball 20-25 times, that bit of strategy would have opened up the passing game. Thanks. Carter (Seoul)
A: Love the positive energy in the mailbag and from Carter. I didn’t think the Cowboys ran badly on Sunday. The run gave averaged 4.7 yards per carry and I figured the distribution between Barber and Jones was good, eight carries each. The thing that bothers me more than anything is that Jason Garrett should try to get the ball to his main playmakers: Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Felix Jones. After that you fit in where you fit in. Cowboys have to find an identity for its offense ,,,,
