ESPN: Cowboys Save $34M on Cap If Dak Prescott Is Traded or Cut Before March 2024

Sooner or later, the Dallas Cowboys will have to put their money where their mouth is with star quarterback Dak Prescott.

The two-time Pro Bowler is due to be a free agent after the 2024 NFL season. ESPN's Dan Graziano noted Thursday, however, that the Cowboys will have a possible out out this offseason.

He wrote Dallas could save $34 million against the salary cap by trading or cutting Prescott before his roster bonus kicks in next March. He's due to have a $29 million base salary for 2024, and his bonus totals $5 million.

Graziano added that "the odds dramatically favor another Prescott extension that keeps him in Dallas long term." Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has signaled his desire to hold onto the 30-year-old while affirming his general confidence in the player.

Yeah I still think the odds are that Dak gets a nice new extension, however this seems like the first time that moving on is an actual possibility. Still need an actual replacement option to present itself. That COULD be Trey Lance, but that comes with a ton of things to fall right over the next 6 months.

If Dak fails again and wastes another good roster.

He’s gone.

Who wrote this? Dak has a no trade clause, keep up! He can be cut but not traded.

best case is Dak has a good year to earn the extension (as long as its not current market rate which it will probably be).
Cutting him sounds great cap wise, but who to replace him? I mean look at the Jets or Bears, great defense ruined by poor qb play constantly.

Could be, but you have to look at the other side of the equation too. IMO Lance was brought in to be an option if the Cowboys can't get over the hump again, but even if Dak has a poor playoff showing this year you still need a plan B before Dak just walks. Maybe that is out there, but with how much money has been kicked to the back of his current deal you almost have to find a cheap option, and you'll have to have a decision made prior to the draft. It'll be interesting to see what those options are in a few months, however they are likely to be pretty slim.

I'm going to say this. If Dak doesn't produce this year and SIGNIFICANTLY DO HIS PART to help us win, then we may have to explore this option.

My only fear is, if we slice Dak, what are our other options with THIS team we have in place??

That was with a horrific defense. Oh, and that was 3 seasons ago.

Dak's 20-9 since then with a playoff win as well.

Keep humiliating yourself.

I brought it up cause that injury got him this contract. If he don’t get injury in 2020 he’s gone.

He fails again this year. He’s gone.

The pressure is too much. He ain’t built for it.

Yeah I have zero issues point out Daks shortcomings, but that stretch in 2020 was some of the best football Dak has played. Terrible defense and a terrible Oline that year.

If we switched Dak and Jones Sunday guess what happens?

The Cowboys still win 40-0.

Dak is very replaceable.
