Cowboys take linebacker in Todd McShay mock draft

That'd suck, a LB that high? The only one I've ever seen recently that was worth that high a pick was Kuechly. A LB isn't going to help us that much. When you pick that highly, you take an impact player at a skill position or trade down period.

I like Smith but i would be dissapointed about that pick,we have 2 LBs from this years draft who have seen very little playing time too.

1. Tennessee - Joey Bosa DE Ohio St.
2. Cleveland - Paxton Lynch QB Memphis
3. San Diego - Robert Nkemdiche DT Mississippi
4. Baltimore - Jalen Ramsey DB Florida St.
5. San Francisco - Jared Goff QB California

6. Dallas - Jaylon Smith OLB Notre Dame
I won't be surprised if the Cowboys spend an early-round pick in 2016 on a QB to be Tony Romo's heir apparent. But with Lynch and Goff gone, Smith would be a good way for Dallas to bolster its front seven. He shows excellent range against the run and in coverage, and is a far more disruptive pass-rusher than his 4.5 career sacks would lead you to believe.

7. Detroit - Laremy Tunsil T Mississippi
8. Miami - Ronnie Stanley T Notre Dame
9. Jacksonville - Vernon Hargreaves III CB Florida
10. St. Louis - Laquon Treadwell WR Mississippi
11. New Orleans - Jarran Reed DT Alabama
12. Chicago - DeForest Buckner DE Oregon
13. Tampa Bay - Jack Conklin T Ohio St.
14. Atlanta - Myles Jack LB UCLA
15. Oakland - Tre'Davious White CB LSU
16. Washington - Michael Thomas WR Ohio St.
17. N.Y. Giants - Shaq Lawson DE Clemson
18. Buffalo - Taylor Decker T Ohio St.
19. Houston - A'Shawn Robinson DT Alabama
20. Philadelphia - Sheldon Rankins DT Louisville
21. Indianapolis - Kendall Fuller CB Virginia Tech
22. N.Y. Jets - Leonard Floyd OLB Georgia
23. Minnesota - Darron Lee OLB Ohio St.
24. Pittsburgh - Cameron Sutton CB Tennessee
25. Kansas City - Reggie Ragland ILB Alabama
26. Seattle - Maliek Collins DT Nebraska
27. Green Bay - Su'a Cravens OLB USC
28. Denver - Kenny Clark DT UCLA

Smith is better than any LB we've taken the last couple of years. He's a starter from day one.

Personally, I'd like to end up with Ramsey or Nkemdiche or Hargreaves if we go defense with our first pick.

If Tunsil is on the board at 7 I take him. I aint letting an elite OT slide past me.

Hate to say it, but I really hope we don't win anymore games. If we fell out of the top 10, a lot of those prospects between 11-31 are 2nd rounders in most draft years.

As far as Jaylon Smith, this line from the write up...

He shows excellent range against the run and in coverage, and is a far more disruptive pass-rusher than his 4.5 career sacks would lead you to believe.

How about we stop drafting those kind of guys -- the almost guys? How about we draft more of those guys who get a ton more sacks (or turnovers or tackles) than you'd expect based on their physical traits? And honestly, given how little we actually send a LB after a QB, and how obvious we are about it when we do, is that really something we'd put in the 'pros' column when assessing LBers?

If we had to go LB in RD1, please pick Jack. Much better fit here than Jaylon Smith.

I agree. If we want a LB frankly I just as soon take Striker later and use our first for a QB RB or other high impact position

Archer shows his *** here. He admits he doesn't know anything about the player and then goes on to say he wouldn't draft him for reasons that wouldn't apply if he knew anything about Jaylon Smith.

Smith can play any LB position and would absolutely be a 3-down backer, even if he plays the SAM. He is a better coverage backer than anyone on this team not named Lee from day one.

I get what you're trying to say but it doesn't apply to Smith. He hasn't been asked to rush the passer much at all since his freshman year. He has been their main zone/coverage backer and has been excellent at it. What a coincidence, that's one of our biggest weaknesses. He shouldn't be measured by that stat in the least. He's definitely shown the ability to get to the QB, he just hasn't been asked to. No almost argument about it.

This guy is a physical freak and plays like it. He really has no weaknesses in his game save he need a little work shedding blockers, but that's a technique issue that can be coached.

All that said, if the raft falls that way and we don't trade back, I take Hargreaves.

Smith would be starter day one, they could move Hitch to MLB if we don't retain McClain

Myles jack > jaylon smith. x 100

I like Jack, but that's ridiculous. Smith will be a better NFL backer, I have no doubts. Smith had over 100 tackles the last two seasons, he has better versatility, a much better build, a higher ceiling and no injury concerns.

Jack is a great backer, but he's over hyped. The only thing Jack has on Smith is his ability to run the ball, which is oh-so important for a linebacker.

Think Jaylon Smith is my favorite player out of the blue chip tier this year. Prototype modern day LB.

In that scenario I hope we trade down (heck I sort of hope we trade down anyway) with the best guys available all being either positions we don't have a high demand for or positions we don't really value, I would rather us trade back and gain some extra picks then draft a guy who will likely be just another backup year one (and not a backup QB).

P.S. Speaking of QB, am I reading this right... Cook doesn't go in round 1 and only 2 QBs do?

I noticed neither Elliott or Henry are projected in the first round. That would be GREAT for the Cowboys, but I don't know how realistic that is.

If Mo and Carr walk, we're going to need secondary help in the worst way, especially with OScan coming off a ACL injury. Hargreaves is plug and play. I'd almost bet the Cowboys could move down a few spots and pick up a third because Miami and Detroit are going to want a shot at Tunsil. Make that trade then pick up Hargreaves in the first, Elliott in the second (maybe give up a fourth to move up in the second round) and pick up a linebacker in the third.

As for quarterback, I think Baker Mayfield is going to be a sleeper and possibly a steal. I'd gamble on him in the fourth (subject to compensatory picks).
