Emmitt Smith appreciates Miles Austin making him wrong.
Emmitt ruffled feathers around Valley Ranch with a preseason prediction of 7-9 for the Dallas Cowboys, which players and coaches were grumbling about on their way off the field after clinching the NFC East title.
Well, Emmitt never saw Miles Austin coming. And, quite frankly, the Cowboys certainly could have been a 7-9 team if Austin didn't emerge as a Pro Bowl receiver. Just imagine if Roy Williams had been this team's No. 1 receiver all season.
"Thank you, Miles Austin," Emmitt said during a northtexassuperbowl.com webcast from Super Bowl radio row. "You made my 7-9 pick to 11-5. But without you, at best they might be 7-9 because of what you were able to do. He gave them a shot of B-12 in the arm."
Emmitt stopped short of making a prediction for the 2010 season, but it's safe to say he has much more confidence in his former team than he did a year ago.
"I think they're very close," he said when asked whether the Cowboys could be a Super Bowl team. "With the growth I've seen from a leadership standpoint, the talent has always been there, but you look at that team and they turned a corner."
The Cowboys might prove Emmitt wrong again, but at least the players and coaches won't be mad at him.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ It's expected that Emmitt Smith will get elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Barry Sanders, who is in the Hall of Fame, rushed for 15,269 in his 10-year career.
Smith of course is the all-time leading rusher with 18,355 yards over 15 years. He also rushed for a NFL-record 164 touchdowns.
"He's been sort of heading on his way here for a long time," Sanders said. "We've all known it. It's just appropriate to see him go in."
