First in a series looking at Cowboys young players from 2010.

SAM YOUNG
Position – Offensive tackle
Height – 6-8. Weight – 322
College – Notre Dame
How acquired - 6th round, 2010 draft, No. 179 overall

What he did in 2010 – Young was active for three games as a rookie but did not see any action on offense. He played some on special teams in the kick return game.

<snip>

<snip>

Bryan Broaddus’ scout’s eye – With offensive linemen you always look at background. He was one of the most decorated offensive linemen coming out of Florida and then went to Notre Dame and you have to be impressed by his years at Notre Dame. What he showed me in training camp and the times he got to play is, yeah, he wasn’t strong enough to play but he had the ability to stay between the defender and the quarterback. I thought he was pretty good for a young guy. He wasn’t one of these guys flopping around. Young guys don’t play with strength. They have problems trying to fight guys off just because they get out of position. I think this guy’s got really good technique and good footwork. He’s just not strong right now. A little like Doug Free. He wasn’t a strong guy but I think Doug Free got better with his strength

Oh no! Bryan Broaddus likes him, he will be a bust now!!! :laugh2:

I hope Young turns into at least a quality back up for us. I had the Ourlads guide last year, and his athleticism was ranked number 5 of the available OTs I believe (going on memory).

I think the knock on him coming out of ND was that he didn't improve as much the last couple of years in college. But that could have been because it was a bit too "easy" and he wasn't really forced to.

In any case, I thought coming out of TC he showed promise.

I have high hopes for Sam Young.

And the Cowboys need him.

It would be great if they had their replacement for Marc Colombo in place already.

And it would be nice to have 'hit' on an offensive lineman again.

Do the local DFW reporters have sources on the team? Players, coaches, executives, butlers, anything on or of the team?

Me thinks this is one guy who definitely needs help in the weight room and a coach that will ride his butt like Roy Rogers. He is not one to be self motivated and needs this kind of attention. If he is agreeable to this type of coaching, then he may make something out of himself. At least be serviceable and not like Alex Barron. He is huge, and used to just use this to his advantage while in HS. Not enough in the Pros, or even major college level.

I haven't seen him enough to have a developed opinion, but if strength is a problem I'm concerned. Yes that was an issue with Free too, and yes Free has improved his strength, but Free also had the advantage of above average quickness for an O-lineman. I don't thin Young has that, so without great strength of quickness, there has to be at least some concern as to how much he can develop.

If Young becomes a starter for the Cowboys, that means Free will remain at LT. I'm not so sure thats what I want to see from the Cowboys. I would hope that some how the Cowboys could land a franchise LT. Hidden in the draft or otherwise.

Free has LT quickness, Young will be fine on the right side.

Mick sez: If Bryan B. is so good at evaluating talent then why isn't he on a scout staff in the NFL? :D

Sorry B, had to get that in there at your expense. Keep up the good work and don't stop posting! ;)

I hope Young uses this off season to work strength and conditioning. Given the fact that a lockout may take place we will learn allot about players and their dedication to the game as they will have to put in this work on their own.

I don't understand the decision to not let him play the last game of the season. It only makes sense if they were more interested in evaluating McGhee than they were Young.

Well, now that Gampa Wade is gone I doubt players will be found partying in Vegas, showing off their cribs on Celebrity Cribs, making reality shows, and taking pictures of their junk and posting them on You-Tube.

I expect all of them to work hard this off-season.

I expect them to do the same but I have no doubt that guys will take some time off and travel as well as get away from it all. All players do on every team.

Sometimes it is a good thing to be wrong. Hopefully this is the case with Sam Young and my opinion of him after we drafted him. :D

Not if he has neither strength nor quickness. That was the point. At least with Free he started with a physical trait that implied that with a little growth and development he may be able to handle the job. What I'm hearing here is that Young has neither notable quickness or strength.

Yeah but he can get stronger and probably is considrably stronger now than we drafted him, and as Broaddus mentioned one of the things that kind of stands out with him is he does find ways to stay in front of his guy.

I dont know if he'll be ready to start in 2011, but even if he can act as the 3rd T on gamedays thats a huge plus.

Nobody has said that he doesn't have quickness other than you. He just doesn't have the quickness needed to play LT.(Although since the Cowboys had him as the swing tackle at the end of the season he might have enough in a spot duty situation)

What are the odds that Young hits the weights hard this off season without a structured strength program? Considering he never did in college I'm guessing he probably will not do it now either,,,

I guess we will find out. He was a 4 year starter in college and now having sat his rookie season if we wants to have a shot at the starting job he will have to.
