IRVING, Texas – Jerry Jones delivered a strong message to the Valley Ranch media horde this afternoon that he fully supports Wade Phillips and does not consider the head coach/defensive coordinator’s dynamic with assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Jason Garrett to be an issue.

Here is the transcript of that portion of his impromptu press conference:

Are you comfortable with Phillips handling the roles of head coach and defensive coordinator?

“Yes. That’s really not uncommon. It may not be the majority, but it’s not uncommon for the head coach to have one side of the ball or the other. I happen to like it that way. That’s the way I wanted it. Wade has a really an outstanding track record of decisions and game-calls. It’s worked. We have a couple of division titles. I’m perfect happy with it.

“We made a mistake there that was a costly mistake. In 22 years I’ve seen what’s perceived as some of the best we’ve had make mistakes. Wade does enjoy a real good track record in game-day management.”

Phillips and Garrett both blame themselves for that play. Can you break the tie?

“I don’t look at it. It was a mistake. It’s immaterial to me. I am sensitive to our fans … that’s not an issue. We have a real good relationship and one that we’ve done successful things because of and I think will continue. As it affects our team, I don’t see it as being an issue.”

I'm not sure he really cleared up anything with those answers. But I guess we have to pull out our Jerry's Dictionary to fully understand what he means.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum, I never saw it as needing to be cleared up. I can't believe how big a deal it has become.

"I’m not concerned about it being some type of pattern, a lack of confusion.”

Lack of confusion? So Jerry would like more confusion? I'm very confused when Jethro opens his mouth.

at this point....it is on to the Bears. We will see the Commanders again...late in the season. A lot will be on the line for Dallas when we see them again...and the outcome will be far different next time!

Wade says it. Jerry says it.

But the ignorant folks will ignore it.

The better answer would have been that both men have stood up and accepted responsibility for the miscue. I have no problem with that.

I would be concerned if neither accepted responsibility or blamed each other. But that is not the case.

I don't see it as a coaching confusion. I see it as the media hoping there is coaching confusion.

They tried something and it didn't work. They were too aggressive and it bit them in the buns. They learned.

Too bad it cost us so much, but that is life.

Jerry sounds like the only one with any common sense in the room. Let it go, onto the Bears. It's like Dallas got steamrolled or something. Next it'll be like a point last year when they didn't win by enough or let an inferior team hang around too long. blah blah

Washington's going to lose this week.
Gmen are going to lose this week.
The Eagles are a QB mess,and 0-1.

I'm with you, Hos. I hope the whole season won't bring as much drama and hand-wringing as this week did...

He cleared one thing up Wade is the Head coach not a co head coach but the man in charge on the sideline. Garrett calls the offensive plays as did Norv Turner when he was here but the coach can over ride it at anytime.

Bingo. He's obviously worried about the perception from the media and fans. I wouldn't have even addressed it.

I miss when TO was here....

We would all just blame him.......it was easy and the media loved it :p:

Hos,

I agree it's overblown. It is what it is.

But I believe you are giving Wade and Garrett waaaay too much credit for thinking it through and being "overagressive".

I will never believe it was a case of them being "overagressive".
That's why I think this has generated so much controversy. You can't convince me either coach believed there was any chance of us scoring on that play, (thus being "overagressive").

I believe they all went brain dead on that play and never considered the risk of running another play. They just happened to run the play that was called before the penalty and like a bunch of numbskulls they ran it again without even thinking about the risk. Next thing they knew Hall is in the endzone and they are looking at each other like... "OH SH...OOT"!"

I agree that it really didn't need to be explained but the mediots in Dallas will continue to ask until they get something. I think it was just a blunder at the beginning of the season and will be fixed. I really don't think it'll be a problem going further.
