IRVING, Texas -- With Tony Romo on injured reserve, Jon Kitna is the Dallas Cowboys’ starting quarterback for the rest of the season. And that’s it.

The 38-year-old Kitna’s numbers this season are awfully similar to Romo’s, with Kitna’s passer rating (91.4) only a few points lower than Romo’s (94.9). The one statistic that is stunningly different is the Cowboys’ 4-4 record under Kitna, compared to the 1-5 start under Romo.

However, there won’t be a quarterback controversy brewing at Valley Ranch during the offseason. Kitna will make sure of that.

“That’s not even a subject,” Kitna said. “I have a role on this football team. I signed a contract to be the backup to Tony and that’s my job. I’m supposed to play as well as I can if I get a chance to play.”

I'm so impressed with Kitna...he is one of the best backups that the Boyz have had in a long time.

John Kitna: “I had to step up and be the quarterback, and by that you are a leader,” Kitna said. “I also didn’t want to overstep my bounds. I’m the backup quarterback, so you always have to keep that in mind and understand that at some point Tony is coming back. You can’t have taken things so far one way that now he has to change it back to the way he would like it. I have to continue to kind of go down the same train tracks that he was on.”

Now that's leadership. I never questioned htat about him when we first aquired him. I knew what kind of leader he was watching him play in Detroit once and how he prepared his team during pre-game warmups.

He's the man. Most definitely.

Best since Romo backed up Bledsoe, and best since Garrett backed up Troy.

Who was the backup to Quincy Carter?

I really don't know...

:laugh2:

You embrace the hell out of that backup role, Kitna.

 Really? There are some big babies on this board.

We're extremely lucky to have Kitna. The guy could be starting on many other teams in the league right now and he's happy with his role here. Without his abilities, we wouldn't even have a chance at evaluating where the rest of the team is, even though the season is basically a wash. You definitely can't blame that on him.

I think many other teams is stretching it. He's a decent backup and average starter.
