Cowboys training camp (7/28) -- Pt. 2 (11/30/1999)

The event is now live.
Waiting for writer to provide content...
2:24 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): We're assuming the starters will have to show up to the Alamodome for the afternoon practice after being given the morning off.

We've got Wade Phillips' press conference at 2:45 and will tweet in updates. We'll get back to our perch in the press box after that and chat away. Feel free to fire off early questions.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 2:24 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas)
2:33 ESPNDallas.com: In the meantime, here are links to the AM practice report and the AM chat.

Other news and notes:
* Sean Lee likely won't practice until the weekend because of a strained quad.
* Position battle: Cletis Gordon leads the pack in the fight to be the fourth CB.
* Are DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer the NFL's best OLB pair?
* And for those of you looking for a good laugh: ESPN 103.3 FM's Ben Rogers and Jeff "Skin" Wade asked fans at the Alamodome who their favorite Cowboys players are. Watch here to see what everybody had to say.

And more content will pour in throughout the day on the Cowboys Blog on ESPNDallas.com. Thanks for joining us.

An over-the-hill T.O., an inured Bryant, and a crazy man by the name of "Ochocinco"? Um, give me the other guys.

Who would win 1 on 1. Calvin Watkins at WR with Brian Brodd in coverage?

Wednesday July 28, 2010 2:39 Bored at work
2:40 ESPNDallas.com: Broaddus would get a good shot at the line, but we'd have to take Calvin once he got into space.

Is it me or are the bengals basically the 08 cowboys?

2:40 [Comment From Brandon Worley Brandon Worley: ]
The problem is that Ochocinco and (especially) T.O. are much older than the trio of receivers the Cowboys have. While they certainly still have talent, the overall potential of the Cowboys' trio is much higher.

Who knew? Here's Wade Phillips falling back into coverage. Backup material?

3:16 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Sean Lissemore (groin), Jason Hatcher (elbow) and Lorenzo Washington (hamstring) are all out. Cowboys might have to bring in another D-lineman just to have enough to practice with.

3:23 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Cowboys are in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts, by the way. Working on kick coverage.

3:27 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Dez Bryant is getting reps as a kick returner. Tashard Choice is back there with him, but Choice would be the blocker.

3:31 calvinwatkins: Miles Austin wearing No. 2 today in honor of Derek Jeter. [via Twitter]

3:31 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Andre Gurode is the starter. What happens if he gets hurt? Right now, the plan is for Kosier to slide over.

3:33 calvinwatkins: Tashard Choice talking smack on kickoffs. [via Twitter]

3:33 [Comment From Brad Brad: ]
Have the Cowboys ran any 4 WR formations that would include Crayton with Austin, Bryant, and Williams?

3:34 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Witten is usually in the slot if they go four-wide.

3:35 [Comment From Brad Brad: ]
How has Brandon Williams looked and how is his knee holding up?

3:35 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Limited to one practice per day, but consistently impressive. Check out yesterday's blog post to read more about him.

3:36 BryanBroaddus: With roster spots tight at receiver, the coaching staff is now working Kevin Ogletree with the first teams on the punt and kick off teams. [via Twitter]

3:40 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Stretching just started.

3:49 calvinwatkins: Cowboys officials met with the city of San Antonio about extending this agreement the last two days. Things are preliminary. [via Twitter]

3:54 calvinwatkins: One guy who is doing well in camp is Cletis Gordon. He's the leader at 4th CB. WR Titus Ryan is struggling. 1 drop and false start yesterday [via Twitter]

3:56 calvinwatkins: Wade Phillips said the team is short on defensive line with injuries. Normally Bowen would have gotten morning off, but he worked out. [via Twitter]

3:57 calvinwatkins: I doubt if Cowboys will make any roster moves right now with the injury list growing. [via Twitter]

3:59 calvinwatkins: Pat Watkins is out a few days with sore knee. Good special teams player. [via Twitter]

4:05 calvinwatkins: It was interesting to see Dez Bryant on scout team KR with Bryan McCann. [via Twitter]

4:07 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): About to get some action. Looks like 7-on-7 and pass-rush drills.

4:14 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Kosier handles inside move by Bowen. ... Romo to trusty John Phillips on out in front of Scandrick. ... Free got turned around on Ware speed rush, but Ware wouldn't have gotten to QB. Great job by Free when Ware tried inside move the next rep. .... Ogletree with a drop on crossing route from Romo. Two straight days he'd drop a pass. Little high, but gotta catch that ball.

4:15 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Kitna throws short to Phillips. ... Junior Siavii bull-rushes Bright with little success. That's only move Siavii has.

4:16 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Ogletree hangs onto one on a crossing route from Kitna. ... Olshansky whips Holland with outside move. Holland won first rep. ... Kitna almost got picked by Gordon trying to thread needle on out to to Ogletree.

4:18 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Nice PBU by Mike Jenkins on Kitna out to Crayton. Kitna unimpressive again. ... Good job by Alex Barron vs. Curtis Johnson on second rep. Johnson won first rep. ... Newman broke up go to Bryant. Kitna deep ball was behind Dez, giving Newman chance to get hand on it.

4:19 BryanBroaddus: Nice match up in one-on-one pass rush, Doug Free and DeMarcus Ware. Ware tried to throw several moves, Free patient, waited, then punched. [via Twitter]

4:20 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): McGee short out to Sicko. ... Mike Tepper is holding his own vs. Bowen. Not a bad practice squad candidate at all. Tepper moved to guard after playing OT at Cal. .... McGee fires bullet to Holley, zipping it past Scandrick on sideline for gain of about 8.

4:19 BryanBroaddus: Nice match up in one-on-one pass rush, Doug Free and DeMarcus Ware. Ware tried to throw several moves, Free patient, waited, then punched. [via Twitter]

4:21 BryanBroaddus: Maybe his arm is tired but there is no zip on any of Jon Kitna's passes. Balls to the outside are driven on without problem. [via Twitter]

4:22 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Colombo can't get to Ratliff on stunt. Better job by Colombo next rep. ... Sicko has a ball go off his hands on crossing route. Mihgt have been tipped by L. Williams. ... Free stays with Ware as No. 94 stunts inside.

4:23 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Romo 15-yard out to Austin in front of Jenkins. .... Olshansky on a stunt just ain't pretty. The guy just doesn't have the lateral quickness to make it happen. ... Romo checkdown to Anderson.

4:24 BryanBroaddus: Miles Austin runs all his routes at the same speed which makes him tough to read for a defensive back. Jenkins just gave him too much room. [via Twitter]

4:29 calvinwatkins: Nice job by Tony Romo during this passing session. Shown arm strength and accuracy. [via Twitter]

4:31 calvinwatkins: Anthony Spencer with 2 sacks on Romo to start the 11-on-11. [via Twitter]

4:32 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Romo throws a pretty ball off his back foot with Ratliff in his face. Gave Bryant a chance to make a one-handed grab on a corner route, but he couldn't come down with it. Scandrick had him blanketed and probably picks it if Romo doesn't put it out in front. ... Romo connects on short crossing route with Crayton.

4:43 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Kitna to Choice on quick out to move sticks.. .. Ratliff comes free on stunt for would-be sack of Kitna.

Tim, How much longer do you think Newman has left?

Wednesday July 28, 2010 3:17 Jason
3:19 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Ask him and he hopes to play into his 40s like Darrell Green did. He'll be 32 in September, so realistically the Cowboys have to plan like he only has a couple of starter-quality seasons left. They think they have his replacement in Orlando Scandrick, but corner will probably be a priority in next year's draft. They need to start grooming another good young one for when Newman is done.

Will demarcus ware's return to his 2008 playing weight help him have another 15+ sack season? At the start of 09 he seemed at step late from getting to the qb on more than a few occasions and it seemed like the added weight might have been the problem.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 3:20 John
3:21 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): I don't know that weight was really an issue for Ware. He played through all sorts of injuries -- stress fracture in his foot, back problems, sprained neck, a chip fracture in his wrist. Health probably was the primary reason he had "only" 11 sacks.

Hey Tim...is Jason Williams progressing at all? Seems like every time his name is mentioned he has made a mistake. I know the learning curve is steep for him, but does the coaching staff feel he just needs time till the light goes on? Also, wouldn't he be better suited as a rush OLB with his speed...yes, I know we are practically set there, but seems like he might be better off in a 4-3.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 3:23 Chuck

I like that Dez has been so good as of late, but with the fact that Dez has already come out and said that he didn't care if he started or not, do you think the coaches will take that in to consideration for the week 1 roster. Maybe keep things from getting too personal in the locker room with Roy and Dez, if they were to make Dez a starter and Roy a 3rd wideout. Obviously the coaches will do what's necessary to win, but I could see them letting Roy start the whole year just to keep from having any controversy. Thoughts?

4:07 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): They'll have plenty of preseason time to evaluate Barron, even if he doesn't play a down in the regular season. Plus, they have five years of tape on him from St. Louis. If they can offer Barron a starting job, there's probably a good chance he'll be back. I'm sure he'll try to find a starting opportunity if they just want him as a backup.

4:07 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): About to get some action. Looks like 7-on-7 and pass-rush drills.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 4:07 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas)
4:11 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Romo to Witten on a slant inside Spencer. Witten got Spencer to go wide before making his break. ... Colombo roughed up Butler on one speed rush, then got beat on the next one. ... Ratliff blows by Davis. ... Romo overthrows Austin on post. Good coverage by Jenkins.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 4:11 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas)
4:12 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Ratliff beats Davis again. ... Romo hits Hurd down the sideline. Newman lost him. ... Romo checkdown to Barber. ... Bowen shows nice quickness with outside move, but Kosier recovers.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 4:12 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas)
4:14 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Kosier handles inside move by Bowen. ... Romo to trusty John Phillips on out in front of Scandrick. ... Free got turned around on Ware speed rush, but Ware wouldn't have gotten to QB. Great job by Free when Ware tried inside move the next rep. .... Ogletree with a drop on crossing route from Romo. Two straight days he'd drop a pass. Little high, but gotta catch that ball.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 4:14 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas)
4:15 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Kitna throws short to Phillips. ... Junior Siavii bull-rushes Bright with little success. That's only move Siavii has.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 4:15 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas)

Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Ogletree hangs onto one on a crossing route from Kitna. ... Olshansky whips Holland with outside move. Holland won first rep. ... Kitna almost got picked by Gordon trying to thread needle on out to to Ogletree.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 4:16 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas)
4:18 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): Nice PBU by Mike Jenkins on Kitna out to Crayton. Kitna unimpressive again. ... Good job by Alex Barron vs. Curtis Johnson on second rep. Johnson won first rep. ... Newman broke up go to Bryant. Kitna deep ball was behind Dez, giving Newman chance to get hand on it.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 4:18 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas)
4:19 BryanBroaddus: Nice match up in one-on-one pass rush, Doug Free and DeMarcus Ware. Ware tried to throw several moves, Free patient, waited, then punched. [via Twitter]

Wednesday July 28, 2010 4:19 BryanBroaddus
4:20 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas): McGee short out to Sicko. ... Mike Tepper is holding his own vs. Bowen. Not a bad practice squad candidate at all. Tepper moved to guard after playing OT at Cal. .... McGee fires bullet to Holley, zipping it past Scandrick on sideline for gain of about 8.

Wednesday July 28, 2010 4:20 Tim MacMahon (ESPNDallas)
4:21 Wednesday July 28, 2010 4:21

4:21 BryanBroaddus: Maybe his arm is tired but there is no zip on any of Jon Kitna's passes. Balls to the outside are driven on without problem. [via Twitter]

They charge $75 for parking on game days at the stadium?

yep, you can park and catch a bus, its cheaper that way

here is some info
Hi folks. Theodore Kim here at the game, along with the rest of the DMN gang.

A quick note about parking. It is expensive. That's true even for the so-called "cheap" spots far from the stadium. Lot 14, one of the most remote "official" lots, cost $50. At other events, the lot is much cheaper -- usually around $30.

Off site parking also is expensive -- as much as $40 forspaces nearly a mile away (!) from the stadium. I saw one makeshift lot on Division Street just off of Route 360 that was charging $20. That's at least a few miles away. Amazing, we know.

Remarked one Lot 13 attendant with a grin, "Cheap today, ain't it?"

there is a bus that carries you to and from the game, but i would have to dig in my old cowboys info to find it, and its pretty cheap too, $30 i think

this is one of those talking points the media likes to goof on, just like the 100 dollar pizzas.

rest assured as a normal fan just going to the game you will never have to deal with either. That 75 dollar lot is not for the general public.

I bought a 50 dollar parking pass last year because of the uncertainty of the surroundings having never played a game there.

this year I didnt buy it. About two blocks behind my 50 dollar lot there is a 20 dollar lot and all along rando mill all the way back to cooper there are public lots between 20 and 40 bucks.
