On Friday’s we have our weekly mailbag. We got some leftover mail for you. We take a look at two good questions we couldn’t get to and tell you what we think.
Q: Please this is not rocket science, trade Marion Barber for a late second or early third. Trade Martellus Bennett to Cincinnati for their second (they offered). Release Ken Hamlin and move Terence Newman to Safety. First round Bruce Campbell or Kyle Wilson. Second round, if we get Campbell first, then try for Wilson early second. Also, make Bennett trade, plus a fifth rounder if not, then grab Dexter McCluster 2nd round and Chad Jones, the safety with our second rounder. In third round, trade Barber and grab Jon Asamoah. Or get Sean Lee What do you think? David (Philadelphia)
A: Well, David that’s a lot of ifs there.
First, the Cowboys are not trading Marion Barber. Stephen Jones said the three running backs, Felix Jones, Tashard Choice and Barber are staying put.
Now, I don’t think the Bengals want Bennett. The Cowboys are going to challenge Bennett to become a better player and the reps between him and John Phillips in camp will be something to watch.
The Cowboys won't move Newman to safety after cutting Hamlin. If the Cowboys can upgrade at this position in the draft or free agency, they will do so.
At the Senior Bowl, I was told the Cowboys might draft a running back now with the commitment to the returning backs, drafting a running back seems out of the question.
Q: Out of all the Cowboys free agents, which ones will (or should) they keep and who might they go in free agency and the draft? Adam (North East, Maryland)
A: As you know by now, kicker Shaun Suishamwas not tendered and cornerback Cletis Gordon signed a one-year contract. All the other restricted free agents received tendered offers. Unrestricted free agent Montrae Holland will not be sought after. Now just because they tendered some of these restricted free agents, doesn’t mean some of these players will make the 53.
Expect the defensive linemen: Marcus Spears, Jason Hatcher, Junior Siavii and Stephen Bowen to return. Wide receivers Sam Hurd and Miles Austin will play in September as will safety Gerald Sensabaugh. I think Pat McQuistan and Cory Procter will wear a star on their helmet too. Safety Pat Watkins was good on special teams but if the team drafts a safety expect Watkins’ status to be in doubt.
Everyone else is uncertain.
In terms of free agency, the Cowboys won’t become big players. There is a likeness for linebacker Greg Ellis, who was cut by Oakland last week. Jerry Jones has expressed an interest. Safety Oshiomogho Atogwe is an interesting pickup, but he’s been tendered with no compensation for the St. Louis Rams. However, as of June 1, he becomes a unrestricted free agent. He could get signed.
As far as the draft goes, expect the Cowboys to look at a safety, offensive lineman, cornerback, wide receiver and a defensive lineman with their picks.
