OXNARD, Calif. -- One of the knocks on wide receiver Devin Street coming into the NFL draft was his speed. He was timed at 4.52 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Street, the Dallas Cowboys' fifth-round pick, showed during Sunday’s practice there is a difference between timed speed and football speed. “People call me slow sometimes but once I get out here it’s about just playing fast,” Street said. “Every time I get the ball in my hands, just try to score, go and give it 110 percent even if just on a block.

I feel like Devin Street is going to be one of those rookies who will optimize his limited opportunity after hitting the field on Sundays. My worry is not that he will not make the catch and maybe take it to the house. No. My worry is the same as it is for any wide receiver in their first couple of seasons in the league. He must secure the ball while running. Don't carry the ball like a loaf of bread or not shield it with the body. I hate seeing fumbles after huge catches--especially when veteran receivers like Roy Williams allows the defensive back to punchout a sure 1st and goal or touchdown catch-and-run.

That still bugs me to this day.

I'm getting really excited to see this kid play this preseason and see what he's capable of possibly doing for the Cowboys.

from the sample size i've seen @ pitt and read of him, he's a bright young man, and a student of the game. I expect him to be diligent in correcting any flaws that are correctable....high attention to detail type of player.... learning from larry fitz has to help.

I have said this before. His interview with Hitzges after being drafted was one of a mature kid who understood what was ahead needed his entire focus. The being drafted is where it began, not that he has arrived.

Irvin timed out at 4.50 in the forty. I believe we'd have a consensus within Cowboy Zone that Irvin played faster than his forty time.

Not saying Street is or will ever be Irvin. But his maturity level and awareness suggest he will maximize his ability when opportunity arises.

I like this pick.

Not to defend Roy because I was mad at him too, but in all fairness he did attempt to secure the ball with both hands at the end of that catch and run. The DB made a great play on the ball, much to our chagrin. That was so heartbreaking, up there with Lett in the snow. Happy Thanksgiving.

You're 100% right that it was a great play by the defensive back, but it was a play which Williams should have rose to the occasion and prevented.

Sometimes the other guy makes a play too.

You're right. It is also correct that, when the game is on the line, it takes more than the quarterback to win it.

That last little quip was not directed at you by the way. ;):)

I always enjoy your thoughts and perspective, DE.

I felt sorry for RW. it seems so many wanted to make him out to be the bad guy. it wasn't his fault Jerry paid too much. But somehow he abetted that move in the minds of some.

It causes me to wonder if RW had brought Dez type skills would he still be the focal point of so many hating him. I suspect so.

If he can do this year what TWill did for us last year. This will be great. Even if he does half as much. Because this means Dez & TWill are having very good years.

He won't get the same opportunities TWill did, unless we have some injuries.

I think Street will prove himself a dependable, posession-type WR with sure hands and the ability to get open on a regular basis. Has a reputation as a very adept and precise route runner. Romo thrives on that type -- I think he's a lot like Laurent Robinson.

I'm interested to see whether he can get consistent separation in the NFL.

I don't think he can.

You obviously have the right to have doubts.
I think his precision on route running will be the deterring factor on him proving you wrong or right. We will find out soon enough.
Even if he has a modest season, here's to the young man showing promise.

It's not like I'm 100% convinced on him. I secretly root for him. He was 15 minutes away from me when he got the call from the Cowboys.
