PHILADELPHIA -- Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant had a standard bone graft as part of his surgery to repair his broken foot, sources told ESPN, and the team is hopeful he can return to the lineup by Oct. 25.

Bryant suffered a Jones fracture in his fifth metatarsal, the bone running along the outside of his right foot, and had surgery Monday. The bone graft is the Cowboys' standard operating procedure for this type of surgery, sources told ESPN.

The Cowboys have put an optimistic four- to six-week timeline on Bryant's return, and opted against putting Bryant on the IR/designated to return list. Had he been put on the short-term IR, Bryant would have had to miss eight games and it would have opened up a roster spot.

The bone graft happened on Tuesday of last week. If the doctors thought that Dez would need 10-12 weeks at that time, he would have been on IR-Designated to return. It makes sense that since Dez isn't on IR-Designated to return, he is expected to be able to come back earlier. Makes sense to me. Now, the Cowboys and Dez may change their minds a week or two later if new information comes in on his progress.

Right now, I think the team, the doctors, and Dez think 6 weeks is realistic. The time frame to come back may also be influenced by how the Cowboys as a team are doing. If the Cowboys are say 5-1 or 6-0 :D after 6 weeks, then the Cowboys may error on the side of caution and give him another week or two and not rush him back.

I would expect around 10 weeks. Back for December and the post season if they make it.

I am hoping our Defense will generator enough pressure with Hardy and Romac back after week 4 to take some sting out of losing Dez.

Taking Dez and Decmarco out of this offense blows big time! Gonna be tough.

I am ready for Hardy and Ro to come back as we are going to need a big time defense to balance out what we will miss on O.

Let's all cross fingers.

When I research NFL WRs who had a Jones fractures in google I come up with Julio Jones, Marvin Jones, and Hakeem Nicks.

In all three of those cases the outcome wasn't encouraging. Julio Jones and Marvin Jones both missed the rest of the season, and Hakeem Nicks was bothered by his injured foot when he came back and was never the same.

It leads me to think this is a 'minor' version of that injury possibly?

From Mike Fisher

"Since 2004, 25 NFL players have undergone this sort of surgery (with or without the graft) and their range of return was 5.9 weeks to 13.6 weeks. That's an averafe of 8.7 weeks. That's part of Dallas' optimism here. That optimism is reflected in the Cowboys' decision to not place him on the IR-Designated-To-Return list."

Would not be surprising if he doesnt come back at all this year. Foot injuries/ surgeries is a crap shoot. Time for others to fill the void.

5.9 weeks? The lower bound should be a whole number, not an average.

If they're counting Lawrence in this, he could have returned a lot earlier than he did.

Well, the bone graft is "standard", so that means there really isn't anything new on this at all.

Not only do different players heal differently, but we also dont know what kind of additional measures Dez might be taking. For all we know he could be getting daily foot massage and acupuncture to increase blood flow. He might be in a hyperbolic chamber. He might be on a special diet. He might be doing meditation and visualization practices. That goes for other players that had this injury too.

Different players use different techniques. Obviously the team is optimistic that Dez will heal fast.
