IRVING, Texas -- Now that we are into the second week of the 2015 NFL league year, another $7.5 million of Tony Romo's $17 million base salary in 2015 has been fully guaranteed.
Last March Romo had $7.5 million of the 2015 base salary with the second guarantee kicking in on the fifth day of the league year.
After this year, no more money is guaranteed in the $106 million extension Romo signed in 2013. Romo’s base salaries in the next two years actually are lower than what he will make in 2015. He is scheduled to earn $8.5 million in 2016 and $14 million in 2017. His deal runs through 2019.
The Cowboys could choose to restructure Romo’s contract in the coming weeks to help create cap room, but will be hesitant in gaining the full amount of space because it would add money to future cap years. They could take bits and pieces as they go throughout the offseason if they wanted, but none of the maneuverings would actually put more cash in the quarterback’s pocket.
Romo isn’t the only player to have base salary guarantees come through early on in the league year. Sean Lee's $2.5 million base salary became fully guaranteed, as did Orlando Scandrick’s $1.5 million base salary. Dan Bailey's $1.7 million base salary also became fully guaranteed.
And to clean up some other contract talk, the deals for linebacker Keith Rivers and fullback Jed Collins are minimum salary-benefit deals. Both players will make a $745,000 base salary, but Rivers received an $80,000 signing bonus and Collins received a $65,000 signing bonus. Rivers will count $665,000 against the cap and Collins will count $650,000.
