For Dustin Vaughan, winning drive meant a lot

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Dustin Vaughan wanted to stay in the moment after the Dallas Cowboys won their first preseason game since 2013 on Thursday. Thinking of the next 48 hours in which his football future could be decided could wait.

"Coach [Jason] Garrett told us to enjoy tonight, look in the mirror and say, ‘We did enough,'" Vaughan said in the middle of the locker room after the Cowboys' 21-14 win against the Houston Texans. "Hopefully that's reality."

The final cuts come Saturday and Vaughan admitted it will be "nerve-wracking, just like for everybody."

A year ago the Cowboys kept Vaughan on the 53-man roster, carrying a third quarterback behind Tony Romo and Brandon Weeden because of the promise he showed last summer. This summer has not been as productive, but Vaughan had his best moment when the Cowboys needed him most.

Vaughn had some rough moments but he also showed me he belongs for now. Another year and hopefully he should replace Weeden. I'd like to see Showers go to the PS.

I respectfully disagree. I see nothing in Vaughn worth keeping around and wasting a roster spot.

No pocket presence, no mobility, no moxie or "it" factor, and no ability to read defenses downfield.

Sorry for him but time to cut this guy loose.

If they keep a 3rd QB anywhere but the PS this year, it will mean cutting a player that may have a real future as a contributor for this team. Vaughan is not even close to being worth that. By Saturday night, I bet there will be at least five, probably more, QBs released that are obviously better that him. Many will probably be better than Weeden. I'd love to see them replace Weeden/Vaughan with a real QB and replace Dunbar with a better option that could develop into the starter.

Still a whole lotta 'meh'. At best, he's a 3rd string QB, don't think he has what it takes to be a capable #2 down the road. Just a space filler for now.

Sorry jobberone, but I agree with Staubacher for the most part. Vaughn has the physical attributes but he is lacking something.

I mentioned yesterday that I would not be surprised if Showers never saw the field -- they would try and give him little exposure so they could sneak him onto the PS. I thought it would be Vaughn who would play most of the game; he would either make a case for a roster spot or he would fail. He proved he is still a developmental guy and does not deserve to be protected.

Showers is the guy I think the Cowboys will try and re-sign after cuts tomorrow. If he is gone, though, Vaughn should still be available and they can give him time on the PS.

I got to agree, I expected much more from him this training camp yet he seems to have gotten worse not better.

He does appear to have regressed -- perhaps a result of his lack of preparedness before training camp -- but he still has potential. If he can make it to the PS they may be able to develop him into a decent backup.

I don't know, have to see what the coaches think. Right now would not be shocked if he was released. I hate to say that because I really felt coming into this camp he would be further along and he is not. I think there will be some prospect who will be released who are better candidates.

Whoever watched the first PS game, I think it was Babe who said he talked to Dustin who said he made the mistake of taking like a month off right before camp to rest his arm. He shows flashes, but not long enough flashes.

Really the only point in keeping him is that he knows the system, but that's pretty much it.

True then again as a 3rd QB it would not be very hard to get a guy in here and learn the offense as well. I highly doubt 3rd string will even see the field but based on what I saw Vaughn really looked poor through out camp. Even when given the opportunity to play with many of the 1st string players.

That's what I wanted to bring up. It seems as if he almost felt he had that 3rd string spot locked up. He looked decent last year in preseason, but this year he did nothing.

I don't think Vaughn is worth having to cut a dline guy
Rather go 2 and have showers on ps
On some rosters giving him another year might be worth it but to me it's all about him being a better prospect than the guy you cut and I think there are a couple of dline guys who are better prospects at their position than he is at his

That's exactly it. Outside of knowing the playbook, there's really not much upside, just taking up space.

Nicely put but I see more. But I agree time is running out. If they could find a better QB after cuts then I wouldn't be surprised
