IRVING, Texas -- The last time Tony Romo played in a regular-season game, the Dallas Cowboys' quarterback had a searing pain shooting down his legs. The flight home was interminable. He needed help from the plane to his car just hours after a fourth-down pass to DeMarco Murray with 1:08 to play gave the Cowboys a 24-23 win against the Washington Commanders to keep their playoff hopes alive. Romo would never get the chance to lead the Cowboys to the playoffs with a victory in the season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.

There will be no limitations Sunday when he sees the San Francisco 49ers at AT&T Stadium to start the 2014 season.

Yet San Francisco offers a reminder that Romo's toughness has been on display more than just in that Commanders' game. On Sept. 18, 2011 at Candlestick Park, Romo played most of the game with a broken rib -- and later learned he had a punctured lung -- in leading the Cowboys to a 27-24 overtime win against the Niners.

"Washington was probably the most difficult one to continually play through, but, boy, San Francisco wasn't comfortable," Romo said. "I don't want to minimize that. But when you're playing, you're playing. It's football and you push through everything and you go. Anyone who has ever played understands. You compete. You lay it all on the line, and then you figure out what's wrong with you after."

In the fourth quarter, Romo completed 11 of 14 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown pass. He directed the tying drive that ended with Dan Bailey's 48-yard field goal on the final play of regulation. In overtime, he and Jesse Holley connected on a 77-yard pass to set up Bailey's winning kick.

"He comes off the field and his mom wants to hug him," Romo's father, Ramiro, said. "He says to his mom, 'Don't hug me, mom. Don't hug me. I can barely breathe right now.' "
You can call Romo a bunch of things, but soft isn't one of them.

Mickey had a great story on the most recent Talkin Cowboys about this that I was shocked I had not hear before. That famous clip from 2007 where he said after the game "If something in sports is the worst thing that ever happens to you, you've lived a pretty good life" was apparently in reference to him collapsing in the shower after the game from the pain and *not* a reference to the team losing the game that everybody thought it was. According to Mickey, at least, it was a truncated quote that was taken out of context and then everybody ran with it, when the reality was, it was him minimizing the importance of pain in the context of a team objective.

Boils my blood to think that might be true.

He may not be "soft", but he definitely is pudgy. ;)

Just kidding, Anyways I've always wondered how people can question his passion for the game when he plays with such devastating injuries. If the man didn't want to win folks, he dang sure wouldn't be playing with a broken rib, I can promise you that.

I heard it too. Just think about the crap he took for years for saying that ... and still does from the clueless.

Wow, had not heard that. That said, I never took issue with the interpretation that was erroneously? applied to his statement. Football really should not be the most important thing in anyone's life (even though it's pretty high on my importance list! :p)

Crazy, right? I didn't have a problem with a philosophical observation about what's important in life at the time, either. But to think he was actually saying the pain wasn't important (with the obvious implication that he endured the pain because of the obligation he felt to the team) and to have whoever was present in the press hear that in context and pretend it was instead a flippant reaction to losing and run with it....argh. Lowlifes.

Romo has been one of my favorite players since he got the starting job during the '06 season.

Everywhere I go talking with fans of other teams and even some Cowboy's fans, all I hear is how much he chokes at the end of big ballgames. They have no clue at the fact that he has the highest 4th quarter QBR of any quarterback of all time and it's not even close. He has the most 4th quarter comebacks of any quarterback in the league in the last few years as well.

Glad he plays for us.

I still get people making statements way off base about Romo. I just say, well, that's your opinion, and leave it at that. Not worth my time to get into any conversation with anyone at that point.

And, ...whe Romo haters are in a meeting, planning their anti Romo spews any time now...LOL

Romo reminds me of Lenny Dykstra when he played for the Mets, the called Dykstra "Nails" because he was so tough, that nickname would apply to Romo as well.

Context or not, Romo's statement was always true regardless.

What is losing a football game..............compared to getting cancer, or being paralyzed from the neck down, or going through the Holocaust, or getting run over by a drunk driver speeding at 80 miles per hour, or suffering third-degree burns to half of your body?

Interesting take.

I wonder what @Sturm1310 would say, because if I remember correctly he was pretty critical of that quote
