SAN ANTONIO - One of these days, Gerald Sensabaugh will figure out he’s not a star.

He’s an average player.

No more, no less.

There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s far better than being a bad player.

Sensabaugh has been an unrestricted free agent after each of the past two seasons. Each time, he assumed he was getting a big money deal.

Each time, he returned to the Cowboys - the prodigal son comes to mind - and signed a one-year deal...

One more Safety to get . . . . I'll feel a lot better about our defense's chances at that stage. Seems we put an offer out to Elam, so maybe he'll be the FS.

As was mentioned in another thread, in Rob's defensive scheme FS and SS are often interchangeable in their responsibilities.

He's an average player, but in 2010 he was a bad player, like the whole cowboy defense actually

Actually, according to some of these "metrics" sites (specifically Pro Football Focus), Sensabaugh actually had a good year versus the run and pass. Looking at that site and recalling all the times that he & Ball were arguing with each other makes me think that THE BULK of the blame lays at Ball's feet. Hamlin and Sensabaugh didn't seem to have nearly as many issues back there.

When these judgments come up I look for more educated opinions than me. Guys that break down every play of every game.

There may be other guys that do the following, but Jon Bales at Dallas Cowboys Times is probably among the most obsessive about grading players.

Sensabaugh graded out surprisingly high on his 2010 performance rankings. Check it out:

Thanks, it was an interesting read.

Elam and Goldson are right there with him on the average bus.

Sensy just needs a quality player next to him. If you let him play his game, he is a decent player. If he is worrying about an inept safety next to him, well he isn't no Darren Woodson.

Take an average safety on a predictable, unmotivated defense, and you get a liability. Take the same safety on an attacking, unpredictable, motivated defense, and you get an asset.

I knew when David Gerrard called the Cowboys defense predictable that it was time for a change!

The metrics say he was pretty good in 2010, but I don't know how valid those metrics are. In any case, improvement doesn't always mean getting an A player. If you replace an F player with a C player, that's still a huge improvement. Sensabaugh is no worse than a C player, and if we can get somebody like Abram Elam to replace Alan Ball, that would be the F to C improvement we need.

Thks....nice read...

concerning the OP....when has JJT wrote anything worthwhile about the Cowboys? and now he is with ESPN....the TMZ of sports media?

Average is a Herculean improvement over Ball last year. Sensabaugh has always been loaded with raw athletic talent. He was one of my big sleepers when he came out of the draft. The question I have with Sensabaugh is his IQ, given that the Cowboys had so many busted coverages last year. Ryan's defense seems to be rather complex and built upon disguising coverages in the secondary. We couldn't handle basic, vanilla coverages last year.

exactly. he is not a difference maker. but if he doesn't make mental mistakes like ball, then we are going to be OK.

Yes. Sensy is splendidly average. All defenses, even the good ones, are littered with average players. Larry Brown comes to mind. As does James Washington. In fact, in Jimmy's defenses linebackers were generally of the plug-and-play variety.
