Interesting information out of Oakland's OTA camp regarding new big-money receiver Javon Walker. Apparently, the $55 million man isn't in great shape and he was overshadowed by journeyman Drew Carter..

With just under four months to go until the regular season, Walker has plenty of time to get into shape. I covered him in Denver the past two years and he always kept himself in great shape. He was one of the better conditioned players on the team.

Thus, Walker's conditioning shouldn't be a concern. But if he is being outplayed by a guy like Carter maybe all of Walker's knee issues are catching up to him. After he returned from missing seven games due to a knee injury last season, Walker finished the season with seven catches in the final six games. Denver coaches said he was healthy but he was a non-factor. That's why it was so puzzling that the Raiders gave him such a huge contract.

Raiders, Javon Walker

Just be glad they didn't ...

Earlier in the offseason, the Cowboys had an interest in Javon Walker and Walker one in the Cowboys.

Then, Al's Crazy Train towed the Raiders' Brinks truck up to Walker's doorstep and all that ended. And I think we all knew at that time that it was positively nuts. In fact, that was written more than once here.

But when a guy gets six years and $55 million, with $16 million guaranteed and $27 million over the first three seasons of that deal, even when the guy's got a bum wheel, you gotta wonder whether the team signing him knows something you don't.

ESPN.com's Bill Williamson, a veteran on the Broncos beat, cast plenty of doubt with his analysis of the situation, and the Oakland Tribune's Jerry McDonald has an eyewitness account that isn't much more optimistic.
If signed, would Walker have been the second most talented receiver on the roster? Yes. If healthy, would he have been the second best? No doubt. But the "sign" and "healthy" parts of the equation had to relate directly to one another, as in you "sign" him without committing too much money, because he may not stay "healthy." Will someone -- please -- get that concept over to the Raiders?

Actually I still regret that we weren't able to sign Jevon Walker. Believe the situation in Dallas was made for Walker if he was willing to accept 1 year deal for minimum with an option for a 2nd year; all based of course on his being able to pass a physical. Working with WR coach Sherman (Walker's former position coach in Green Bay) should have done wonders for his work ethic, etc. With no money up front, he would have been strongly motivated--something that obviously is lacking in Oakland whose already given him the guaranteed key to Ft Knox. He wouldn't have dared to come into Dallas out of shape, etc.

Walker will amount to a whole lotta nothin in Oakland, except for being rich.

Motivation has never been an issue for Walker, his knee, however, is another matter.

All along I really didn't want him.

I wanted a long term answer and didn't feel like he was it.

After they rolled out the green carpet for Tommy Kelly, he of the 13 career sacks, why would this deal be surprising? Al Davis is certifiable.

I think Walker's case does go to show that we our search for a descent receiver is not hopeless. Some unhappy receiver is inevitably going to complain about his role in the offense and demand a trade at some point in the season, and we all know that Jerry loves bringing in those types.

Also, I believe that numerous players have said it SUCKED to players for the Raiders once they got out of there, so motivation is probably a huge factor.

Agreed - he's highpriced damaged goods.

This is another reason why we can't keep ignoring the WR position in the draft. Unless we start bringing in our own talent, we'll be forced to spend big bucks on unmotivated and disgruntled FA's.

The money the Raiders threw at this guy is ridiculous. Regardless of his knee or his motivation, that kind of money is a serious cap-killer for a what-if.

A high priced out of shape WR should go along well with a 300 lb high priced 2nd year QB.

Reports have come out that Russell is 269. Doesn't mean he wasn't at one point, just that reports are that he's not currently.
