Samuel, Briggs Bust Deadline
July 16, 2007 4:55 PM

As expected, Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel and Bears linebacker Lance Briggs weren't able to reach contract agreements before today's 4 p.m. deadline for franchise players to sign multiyear deals.

It doesn't sound like either player came close to getting something done today, and there's a good chance both of them could wait until Week 10 to sign their one-year qualifying offers.

The one thing I keep hearing is that Samuel's at least listening to several current and former teammates who are advising him to play for $7.79 million this season.

He thought the problems the Patriots have had at his position might eventually cause them to blink, but that's not something this organization is known for. The Patriots are already coming up with a contingency plan at cornerback, but they still think there's a good chance Samuel will show up during training camp.

The Bears have already moved on. Briggs overplayed his hand after the Super Bowl, and I don't sense that his teammates and coaches are trying to convince him to return.

Please no way Samuel will wait until week 10; he will sit out the preseason maybe but if I was a gambling man I bet he signs the contact right before the 1st game.

I will lay it out for you as soon as he signs on the dotted line the salary is guaranteed if he blows out a knee or what ever as soon as the ink is dry.

Next he is crying about money and wanting lots of it lets break this down his tender is 7.79 million they get paid weekly per game so that is $486,875 a game. So if he sits out 9 games he loses $4,381,875 more than his entire rookie contract (he was a 4th round pick). So lets see a guy that wants to hold out because he wanted more guaranteed money they did not offer so he going to pout and lose 4 million dollars. Please with almost 8 million dollars guaranteed as soon as he signs the dotted line like he hold past camp.

Lance Briggs (3rd round pick)Tender is 7 million both will make the 1st game if they miss anything it will be camp and preseason that is it.

Way to much money to walk away from period

I'm with you. Guaranteed after the first game. No way I'd stay away.

Wisdom cannot be taught, but only learned though experience.

We shall see how much wisdom Mr. Briggs and Mr. Samuel actually have.

I would agree but Deion Branch did it last year. Who knows.

Branch was under contract when he held out he was mad at the extension offered. So he sat out then NE made the trade to Seattle for him so we where not talking about a 7 million dollar franchise tag ( i think it was around a million dollars in salary) . Branch was mad because Givens was getting a bigger signing bonus from the titians and he wanted money close to Reggie Wayne money

I don't know about Briggs. He's been very outspoken about what he thinks. He's said that he will miss time if that is what it comes to. I would not be surprised to see him miss 7 games or whatever the maximum is that you can miss and then return to make sure he gets credit for the season. If he does that, then he can force the Bears hand, so to speak.

Well maybe if they suffer from him not playing if not they franchise him again those guys lose big time money no way briggs gives up 9 games of pay which would be close to 4 million
