How have the NFC teams done in Round 1 since 2000?

Dallas Cowboys
Since 2000 the Cowboys have had six first-round selections and three -- Roy Williams, DeMarcus Ware and Terence Newman -- have become Pro Bowl players. Marcus Spears is a starter and OLB Anthony Spencer had a good rookie season. The only gaffe was the 2006 selection of ILB Bobby Carpenter, who happens to play the position that is one of the deepest on this team, so the Cowboys hardly even notice he never sees the field. First-round stars and success in the other rounds of the draft and free agency will lead to great things. That's what has happened in Dallas, which is the most talented team in the NFC and a legitimate Super Bowl contender in 2008 and for years to come.

2007 Anthony Spencer, DE, Purdue 26

Started only six games but showed solid production. Talent already in place means he can be brought along slowly and we believe he will eventually be a force in this defense.

2006 Bobby Carpenter, OLB, Ohio State 18

Has been unable to crack an already-talented starting lineup and is a linebacker without a home. A change of scenery would do him well but for now he's stuck in limbo.

2005 DeMarcus Ware, DE, Troy 11

Ware is a Pro Bowl-caliber player who is equally at home rushing the passer, playing the run and dropping into coverage.

2005 Marcus Spears, DE, LSU 20

A developing players who can be a force on first and second down against the run, Spears is also a powerful inside bull rusher but lacks good counters and pass-rush technique.

2003 Terence Newman, CB, Kansas State 5

A high-profile pick who has lived up to the hype, Newman has 76 pass deflections and 16 interceptions in his career. He is a lockdown corner who allows Dallas flexibility in its defensive schemes.

2002 Roy Williams, S, Oklahoma 8

His physical playing style makes Williams a force to be reckoned with against the run, but he is a big-time liability against the pass.
