Issues swirling around Cowboys

ARLINGTON, Texas -- There is always something with the Dallas Cowboys. Take Saturday for instance.
First was news that Josh Brent signed a one-year contract extension. Then came news of a “tense” meeting after comments were caught on jailhouse video made by Joseph Randle at the time of the running back’s arrest for stealing underwear and a tester bottle of cologne that were negative to teammates Dez Bryant and Brent.
Finally, sources told ESPN that Tony Romo suffered two transverse process fractures in last week’s loss to the Washington Commanders.
Romo’s back injury was a story all week. Jerry Jones did not help matters by saying the decision will come down to pain tolerance. That’s easy to say when it’s not, you know, his back. Romo said the same thing, but what else could he say? He was backed into a corner by the owner.
The injury is not season ending and cannot be further damaged, but look at it this way: Romo has a broken back. Technically. And he’s not expected to play today either.
Brent’s signing is more of a loyalty thing. He returned to practice this week and has to sit out two more games due to a suspension. He was set to be a free agent after the season, but the Cowboys stood by him during the fallout from the accident that cost the life of teammate and best friend Jerry Brown. He almost owed the Cowboys another year, and the contract has no guaranteed money so there is no risk being taken by the team.
The situation that could affect the balance of the team, however, is Randle. The Cowboys disciplined him for the arrest, taking away a game check, but when his words about teammates became public this week, things changed. On Friday, Bryant and Randle had a heated argument on the practice field. When Randle would not stop talking as the team stretched,Jason Witten forcefully told Randle to shut up with some other words not fit for print involved.
