Instead, with those dreams shattered and the season teetering on total ruin, Jones dismissed Phillips the Monday after the Packers loss. Then he called for a team meeting. In a scene that would send shivers down the spine of any human resources director, Jones stood with Phillips in front of the entire roster in the locker room. Only after making sure he had captured the attention of each of his players did he begin to speak.

"This is a good man right here," he said. "I didn't fire this man. You guys did."

Jones let that marinate before continuing. "Somehow and some way, this Cowboy wagon train is going to make it to California. I want to be on it, and I hope you are on it. But Wade's not going to be on it. And that's not good."

He fired Wade in private.

Thats not what happened at all.

Wade was addressing the team and Jerry was angry that he had to fire Wade ..... he was angry at the team.

He let the team know that they let Wade down and forced Jerry's hand.

JERRY called the team meeting. He then proceeded to drag Wade in front of the team and tell them all that he had fired Wade. It doesn't matter that who he was blaming or why he did it or if Wade even went along with it. It's a crummy, unprofessional thing to do.

You can't just blame failures on 'the players wouldn't listen.' It doesn't work that way.

I can't imagine that Jerry would pass the blame on his employees for being unmotivated and undsicplined in his oil and gas exploration business.

My dad has supervised people in the electrical power industry for 40 years. They are not always motivated or well behaved. But, come hell or high water they behave when they are working for him.

As he once told me, 'I tell them that I know every one of them can do their job because I hired them and I trained them. And I tell them that if they do their job, they'll find that I will be the best manager that they will ever have. And if that they don't do their job, they'll find that I will be the worst manager that they will ever have.'

Wade just wanted to keep expecting that if he treated the players like adults that they would act like motivated adults. Unfortunately, just because you expect something, doesn't mean it will happen.

This is 100% correct.

Wade was not a leader of men, not the guy you want helming the ship when the storm comes, though he has proven himself to be a solid #2 guy. It's just what he is. I'm glad to see him having success with Houston.

But his failure as a HC does nothing to excuse the players quitting. And in the Green Bay game last year, many of them quit. There is no excuse for lack of effort. I don't care what Wade did or didn't do, there's no excuse for things like Mike Jenkins to basically spit in his coaches face with his lack of effort.

I hate to hear this. In spite of my misgivings of Wade as a head coach, he seemed like a really great guy and I hate to hear that he was subjected to this humiliation. At the same time, I realize that wasn't Jerry Jones motivation at all. Just like Wade as a HC, I don't want Jerry Jones as my GM. But I think he acted in this way partly because he did like Wade. Much like with hanging onto Dave Campo for so long, he's loyal to his guys and this was his way of standing up for Wade after firing him.
