I hope Jerry allows Stephen to do this job. I don't think the Cowboys should or need to cave in. Ware can't go anywhere for over a year; then he can be franchised and still go nowhere, while being paid millions that will take care of him for life.

The Cowboys need to structure the contract and the length to suit their team goals, not just to reflect DWare's value alone. Otherwise, we'll hear the same people who want to give him whatever his agent asks for crying over the next few years when we have to let key players walk because we cannot pay them. Our current window is probably 2-3 years despite a fairly young supporting cast...Ware will get what he deserves, but he should not be given everything he wants; that's just bad business.

Why does Ware even want to hit free agency? I thought he wanted to retire a Cowboy, if that's the case then the length of the contract shouldn't be an issue.

So he has some leverage on the next contract. If he signs a long term deal that expires when he is 32 or 33 then he will be considered on the downside of his career and possibly expendable.

I'm pretty sure that Ware is in the same predicament as all the other 2005 draftees. Without a new CBA, he would be a restricted free agent last year, without the Cowboys needing to use the franchise tag. I'm not sure what kind of restricted FA he would be though. I suspect the Skins haven't extended Carlos Rogers yet because they expect that there won't be a new CBA, so they'll have leverage over him next year. The situation with Ware might be different however because a team could be willing to give up some high draft picks to get him, so the Cowboys might have to use the Franchise tag on him anyway.

Anyone know what kind of restricted FA class of 2005 draftees would be next year?

Then you cut ties and move on. If Ware signs a short term deal to say hes 28, and he's still good then is he going to ask for another silly contract, i.e 5 yrs 60 million? If you sign him to a long term deal then the team doesnt have to worry about the craziness of him asking them for more big money.

Im not saying Ware isnt worth every penny hes gonna get, but I dont want to risk the chance that he would sign with someone else. Imagine Ware in a Philly uni, even at the downside of his career that would be hideous.

Nothing to see here people. No reason to start going off the deep end over this.

Ware will be getting a new deal here. There's no hurry.

I don't really see why this would be a big issue. It's not like Jerry Jones wouldn't give Ware a new contract 4 or 5 years into a longer one, and up his pay, if he continues to play at the level he has been.

Lawrence Taylor played till he was 34, having his last peak season at 30.

Jason Taylor had his last peak season at age 32. Bruce Smith, 33-34. Michael Strahan, 32.

Ware and his agent know what they're doing. A 4 year deal takes Ware into the middle of his prime. A 6 year deal takes him to the end of his prime, and a 7 year deal means he's probably playing for chump change in year 8.

A 4 year deal means Ware is going into Free Agency at age 30, probably coming off a great year and likely to command another, longer deal huge guarenteed money.

True or he could run into injury problems and not be worth as much. Long and short term contract comes with positives and negitives.

Absolutely. But the risk of injury in today's NFL is lower than ever before. Not that less people get injured, but a torn ACL or the like is no longer the career ender that it used to be, thanks to greatly improved medical tech.

The injury risk is still there, but rather than it being a risk for all 4 years, it's really only a risk if you get injured in your contract year and you don't' get a chance to prove that you're healthy.

Listening to other players it is not the overall contract it is the money in hand the signing bonus the more years the bigger that bonus money will be. I think there are negitives and positives on both the long or short term contacts and I think you will see more players looking for the longer term over the short term contracts. In the end I think Dallas and Ware will get things worked out
