IRVING, Texas – On the first play shown during Tuesday’s film session with the media, a pass-rusher made a sweet stutter-step move to leave the left tackle flat-footed.

Wade Phillips made sure we knew that it was redshirt rookie Brandon Williams, not DeMarcus Ware.

Ware has racked up dozens of sacks with that stutter-step move, which requires extreme explosiveness to be effective. Williams certainly displayed that attribute, turning the corner so quickly that Doug Free failed to get a hand on him.

Free was technically flawed on the play, but the coaches considered it further evidence that Williams can contribute in a limited role this season.

That’s the feeling they had about the Texas Tech product last summer before Williams, a fourth-round pick, blew out his knee in a preseason game. Phillips likes the pass-rushing skill and instincts of a player who led the Big 12 in sacks as a junior before declaring for the draft.

Williams, as expected, was tentative during early organized team activities. There are still times when it appears that he doesn’t fully trust his surgically repaired knee yet. But his burst is back.

"He seems to be back to where he was last year at this time," Phillips said, "and that was a good place because he's exceptionally quick off the ball."

I'm not excited that Free got burnt by our backup.. however, it is OTA.

I try not to judge until the pads come on.

Que the "If Free can't block Williams, how can he block [insert pass rusher]" talk.

Without the pads and full contact the pass rusher has the advantage. He knows he can go full speed withouth the OT hitting him. The OT has to avoid the contact.

I agree with you, only when the pads go on will we be able to start judging a little. Right now it's just a matter of looking at athleticism and potential.

Can we please take this as positive for Williams instead of a negative for Free or are we incapable of this thought process anymore?

:hammer:

lol, oh please. Who wasn't excited till they saw Free's name?

It doesn't mean a thing but every damn last one of you pretenders went there for a split second.

Another player from last year I can't to see play in preseason.

Ofcourse he's got to stay healthy but if 4th round selection Brandon Williams lives up to the hype of the Dallas Coaches and Players, then it looks like yet another big Front Office win for the Cowboys Scouting Department.

:starspin

I'm not expecting much from Brandon this year. It would have been nice if he could have gotten some experience last year. He is probably still 2 years away from being a significant contributor.

I think both BW and Butler will be able to contribute some this year. Ware doesn't need to play every down of every game. Neither does Spencer. I see them rotating them some this year. I'm not sure about their rush defense or pass defense but they should be able to rush the passer on fresh legs.

im sure hurd has burnt both newman and jenkins in practices before so how can newman and jenkins cover any good receiver then? your logic is flawed.

I clearly stated I wouldn't judge until pads got on. What's wrong with that? Either you're being silly, or you failed to read what I posted.

You clearly dont know how it works around here. What you should of done is praised Williams and made an excuse for Free. Like that everybody is happy.

I would like to see Ware get more rest, at least during the beginning of the season.
