ESPN MacMahon: Hail Mary's history lost on Austin

If you want Cowboys history taught to current Cowboys you probably ought to start with the owner. Judging by who's not in the Ring of Honor he must think it all started in 1989.

This is a great thread. I wish the team would hire me to teach the players the History of the franchise they play for. Pride is one hell of a strong tool.

Jones does not revere team history as he should and yes, he does tend to think the franchise started 29 years after it actually did.

The situation with Drew Pearson in the Ring is a particularly hard one to grasp and I believe it is a personal thing. He and Pearson got into a scrap about some ball cap deal that Pearson had with his company and it obviously has never gotten resolved.

This is our 50th year same as the AFL. No celebration. I won't lie. That pissed me off.

I seem to recall that the NFL Network rebroadcast the actual game in its entirety last year some time. Is that right? I missed it if so. It would be nice if they did that this week.
That would be a great idea. So I'm sure they won't think of it.

It's also on the top 10 Cowboy games DVD.

What you notice when watching the old games though is just how much athletic, fast and generally, better the players of today are than those of yesteryear.

Yes we revel in players of long gone eras but I highly doubt those 70s players could keep up with those of today.

Miles, Miles, Miles.

Every year when the rookies come in, Jerry should show them a 1-hour documentary on the history of this great franchise, complete with interviews of former players talking about what it means to be a Dallas Cowboy.

1 hour? Just 1 hour? They need more time then that.

Didn't know about the "Hail Mary"; didn't know about the SI curse; sounds a lot like the triumph of the uncluttered mind.

Exactly. He's not worried about anything other than preparing well, playing well, and winning.

They really should. They should put a premium on putting that pride into their players.

Jerry isn't as bad as some think when it comes to putting the older generation into the RofH. There were 6 players in the RofH before Jerry bought the team. He has put in 6 players who were from the era before he purchased the Cowboys and he also put in Landry and Schramm.

I think Pearson has stated he thought there was a flag thrown because someone threw an orange on the field at that point. You can see him look back in the footage.
Photo of the Drew Pearson Hail Mary

Yeah, I don't really recall what he said he threw. Initially I thought it was a battery, but I think that I'm confusing that with my time as a kid in the Yankee stadium bleachers, orange sounds right though. I do recall my friend saying that there were cars outside the house and people interviewing the guy after the game. On the whole, my experience with Minnesotans has been good, the chicks are good looking by Midwest standards, but the fans can drink a lot and get pretty violent after games.

The game itself was not a great game it just had a great finish to it. Drew Pearson was the forgotten man all day long in that game later talked about how upset he was that he was not seeing the ball come his way. Yet on that drive Pearson came up with 2 big catches one on a 4th down play sideline route that put Dallas around the 50 yard line then of course the Hail Mary. Dallas had struggled all day long but came up big at crunch time adding to the Capt. America's legend

"I don't know about that play. Is that bad?" said Austin, who was born in 1984. "You know what? I’m going to YouTube it and figure it out.

"Now I gotta watch it."

Oh lawd I feel old!

1984! Geez, that was the first year a Cowboys team from that era missed the playoffs. It signaled the beginning of the end for the Landry teams.

Wow, watching that brought back a lot of good childhood memories.

One thing is apparent from that video - Romo reminds me a lot of Roger. Same moves in the pocket to avoid defenders.

Me too. I couldn't believe the lack of coverage on it.

didn't they miss in 1974 as well?

Yes sir. I think he was meaning the 1980's though when he said that era.

1984 was a weird year. Started off 4-1 if I remember correctly but then hit the skids. Hoogeboom was not great and was replaced by White. Still had a chance to make the post season in the last game in Miami. Fell behind 14-0, tied it, down 21-14, tied it but the Dolphins scored late to end the season. The week before, Landry had a chance to win the division, was up 21-6 against the Commanders but choked the game away.

Next year, they came back again with pretty much the same team, won the division when they beat the Giants on a Jeffcoat return for a TD but were punked by the Rams in the first round 20-0. That was also the year the Bears put the complete boots to us 44-0.
