IRVING, Texas – You’re probably skeptical about Martellus Bennett translating his immense potential to production.

You probably got your hopes up after hearing all about the young tight end’s dominance in the Alamodome last summer. But Marty B failed miserably to live up to the hype, catching only 15 passes for 159 yards and no touchdowns in his second season.

The Cowboys still believe in the kid.

“If he’ll just keep doing what he’s doing right now,” Wade Phillips said, “I think he’ll be fine.”

Jerry Jones publicly challenged Bennett’s focus at the end of last season. The owner/general manager recently praised Bennett’s offseason work, which has included lifting weights with the offensive linemen. Marty B is still a goofball, but he's handling his business at Valley Ranch.

It’s one thing for Wade and Jerry to gush about a guy. They do that all the time.

Jason Witten doesn’t blow smoke about undeserving dudes. The perennial Pro Bowler has also been impressed by Bennett’s focus and commitment this offseason.

Witten thinks Bennett learned from his humbling 2009 season, when the 6-6, 265-pound physical specimen was a blocking force but a big disappointment in the passing game.

Bennett has the tools to be a major weapon. He's fast enough to torch linebackers down the seam and athletic enough to leap over defensive backs to get the ball. He should be a vertical threat and red-zone target. But Bennett never established a rhythm with Tony Romo and tended to run imprecise routes and drop passes when he got a rare opportunity to make a play.

“You can’t press,” Witten said. “I think when you’re doing that, you’re thinking about too many things. It’s not good. Just let the game come to you. At the same time, knowing that these are your plays and you want to maximize them, there’s a fine line there. I think that he’s learning that process. More than anything, you make those things happen and more and more is given to you.

“I think he understands that, and I really do think this is going to be a big year for him.”

whatever, like Bennett listens to Witten anyways, he is too busy tweeting about the air pressure in the tires on his car to care.

Man, with all of this potential and all of the offseason reports of talent developing, it's hard not to be sipping the Kool-Aid.

If half of these good reports come to pass, this team is gonna be
l-o-a-d-e-d!

Personally, I'm glad he learned the blocking part of the game first. At TE, the other things come naturally later. If you're doing all your blocking assignments properly, the better it will reflect on your pass production. Oddly, they can sort of go hand in hand.

Witten is brilliant,he always says what the fans want to hear or hope will happen.

someone has to give dcf something to report on.

IMO, this could be a make or break year for Bennett as for as his tenure with the Cowboys is concerned.

He'll have one year left on his rookie contract. I could see the Cowboys attempting to trade him next offseason if he under-performs again this season.
He's due $555,000 in his final year which is affordable for pretty much any team. Some team lacking TE depth may be willing to rent him for a year at that price. We'd probably only get a late round pick for him though.

I know I'm being picky but Witten doesn't really say Bennett is going to have a big year. He says it's going to be a big year for Bennet. He prefaced that by talking about what you had to do to 'get it' and followed up that he thinks Bennett will. Maybe I'm splitting hairs but I think it can be a big year for Bennett with him having a big year.

Fo sho!

Don't forget David La'Fleur, who Aikman liked when we drafted him.

He would have been really good if not for a back injury.

There's no reason Bennett can't do substantially better than last year.

What Witten said was in fact very vague.

"I think this will be a big year for him"
Can mean:
"I think this will be a year of big production"
OR
"I think this will be an important year for him to prove himself."

Dude, I had managed to block those memories away for years. Until now.

Remember hoping Chris Brazzell was going to be the next big thing?

Its a whole different World, now, hoping Dez Bryant is going to be the next big thing.
