Miles Austin, Andre Gurode learning different side of the game

FRISCO, Texas – Miles Austin doesn’t carry an official title in the Dallas Cowboys’ scouting department. He’s not a full-time scout, but he reports to work every day, just as a he did as a player for the club from 2006-13.

Austin last played in the NFL in 2015 for the Philadelphia Eagles. With his playing career done, he returned to the team that gave him his start, the Cowboys, like how Andre Gurode and Josh Brent have done. They are learning the scouting craft from the ground up.

Maybe I've just missed it, but I don't recall hearing about this before now. Interesting stuff.

This was something Landry did all the time; BP as well. Bring back retired players into the organization as scouts and coaches; they know what the coach and GM wants and are looking for it as regards scouting; and coaching the way the coaches taught them.

Interesting but scouting is a very serious, low paying, thankless job. I'm all for working past players but hopefully it's not at the expense of proven scouts
It would be a cool job to watch football for a living though

Having had playing experience with the Eagles, Miles might be able to share some useful info about them (if he hasn't already.) I had no idea Gurode was a Dallas scout now, though. Didn't seem like they made a big to-do out of it, in any case. With their experience, they should both have a good idea who's a good fit for the team and who isn't.

Paint me very interested having prime time and former Cowboys players involved with the structure of player acquisitions and scouting.

Well, at least Gurode won't be able to endanger Cowboys' QBs with his every-game bad shotgun snaps, and his inability to decide which of the A gap blitzers to pick up. Hopefully this more measured work fits his speed.

Best to get recent players out in the field to see prospects.

Giving a different view point on what they think.

How the scouting department weighs that information is yet to be seen.

that is about as valid as the Romo haters blaming Tony for every loss. Anyone that bad would have never made 5 pro bowls

Here's how the scouting reports go from the part-timer.

"Hamstrings weak and easily pulled. Has sat for weeks during multiple seasons. NFL Pro Player comparison: myself. Suggestion: do not draft or sign"
