But Spielman admitted he considered a trade that would have netted the Vikings a presumably higher-rated quarterback, Missouri's Gabbert, but he wasn't willing to give the Dallas Cowboys his second-round pick (No. 43 overall) to move up three spots to No. 9.

-------

Just worthy of mentioning, nothing more.

Glad that Jerry & Co. were not about to give up our pick for peanuts. 3 spots plus #49 would've been amazing. We probably would have moved back up into the first round when the Cameron Jordan slide happened.

Just shows how highly our team values Tyron Smith. I love the pick.

If that's to be believed, I applaud the Cowboys for sticking to their guns and then taking the player they wanted.

It will now be interesting to see if Minnesota regrets their decision.

3 spots, I would've done it for a 3rd and we still likely would've landed smith. Either way love the pick

Would have to be a future 3rd as they have no 3rd in this draft.

Didn't know that, well next years 3 and 6 this year would've been fine

No way do you take that risk on a blue-chip player for that little of a payoff. A 3rd next year? No disrespect intended. That's nuts!

Maybe give something back to Minny for their 2nd.

But in the end if you really like the guy (and apparently they do) sitting tight was just fine.

Taking a pick next year is considered taking a pick one round lower in the current draft. So taking next years third would be like taking a fourth.

I was hoping that the Vikes would send their 2nd rd pick to us and then we take Smith at 12. I would have done the deal if I was Jones but in the end it was too much for the Vikings especially since they did not have 3rd. Smart move on them but not a good choice of a pick in Ponder.

Yep. Just goes to show you that the Cowboys did have Smith rated as a blue chip prospect who was well above all the other options they might have taken 3 spots back.

If they would have had Smith graded close to JJ Watt, Castonzo, Solder, etc., then they would have taken that trade and the extra 3rd. By not doing so, they admit how highly they had Smith ranked.

What exactly was Minnesota offering? A 4th on its own would be way too cheap. It looks like they would have had to offer a 2nd next year along with a 4th this year to trade up. (if they were going to keep this years 2nd)

I read that Dallas was demanding Minnesota's second rounder and the Vikings wouldn't give it up.

So they end up with Ponder instead of Gabbert.

Hope it was worth it.

But I give Dallas credit for standing their ground and getting their guy.

I'm surprised we didn't offer something like our 5th (for example) in exchange.

I know what Dallas wanted. I just don't know what Minnesota thought they could move up with without a 3rd round pick.

So Vela was right that there could have been a deal... If Minny still had their third.
