Bills Are Due and Romo's Gonna Get Paid
October 4, 2007 4:03 PM
Spent the better part of the afternoon talking to Bills left defensive end Chris Kelsay, middle linebacker John DiGiorgio and cornerback Jabari Greer, last week's AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Make sure and stop by Monday to find out what they said.
And if you're near a TV, you might want to check out Trey Wingo's NFL Live this afternoon. He'll have my ESPN.com colleague Michael Smith on to talk about the Tony Romo contract situation.
As we reported over the weekend, the Cowboys and Romo aren't too far apart on guaranteed money, but there's still a significant gap in the structure of the contract. Owner Jerry Jones has hinted that he could simply use the franchise tag on Romo, but he's only done that once since buying the team in 1989 -- and it was with left tackle Flozell Adams.
According to some numbers that crossed my desk earlier this morning, the Cowboys would have to spend $14.3 million to put the exclusive franchise tag on Romo next season. They could put the normal franchise tag on him for somewhere in the $11 million range, but then, other teams would be able to approach him.
It would cost the Cowboys somewhere in the neighborhood of $17 million the following year to have exclusive rights, and the figure jumps to $25 million in the third season.
Basically, Jones can either guarantee Romo somewhere in the $31 million range or end up paying him $56 million over the next three years.
Update: Smith basically said Jones would wait until the end of the season and sign Romo for $30 million, and former Cowboys safety Darren Woodson agreed. I'm not so sure, but a Cowboys insider just read this and called to say that Jerry's not one bit worried about Romo's future.
All my best
