Bills Are Due and Romo's Gonna Get Paid
October 4, 2007 4:03 PM

Spent the better part of the afternoon talking to Bills left defensive end Chris Kelsay, middle linebacker John DiGiorgio and cornerback Jabari Greer, last week's AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Make sure and stop by Monday to find out what they said.

And if you're near a TV, you might want to check out Trey Wingo's NFL Live this afternoon. He'll have my ESPN.com colleague Michael Smith on to talk about the Tony Romo contract situation.

As we reported over the weekend, the Cowboys and Romo aren't too far apart on guaranteed money, but there's still a significant gap in the structure of the contract. Owner Jerry Jones has hinted that he could simply use the franchise tag on Romo, but he's only done that once since buying the team in 1989 -- and it was with left tackle Flozell Adams.

According to some numbers that crossed my desk earlier this morning, the Cowboys would have to spend $14.3 million to put the exclusive franchise tag on Romo next season. They could put the normal franchise tag on him for somewhere in the $11 million range, but then, other teams would be able to approach him.

It would cost the Cowboys somewhere in the neighborhood of $17 million the following year to have exclusive rights, and the figure jumps to $25 million in the third season.

Basically, Jones can either guarantee Romo somewhere in the $31 million range or end up paying him $56 million over the next three years.

Update: Smith basically said Jones would wait until the end of the season and sign Romo for $30 million, and former Cowboys safety Darren Woodson agreed. I'm not so sure, but a Cowboys insider just read this and called to say that Jerry's not one bit worried about Romo's future.

All my best

I'm willing to bet this contract gets done before the Cowboys play the Giants in November. (someone said something about applying part of the cap hit to this years cap saving cap space over the long haul) I think Jerry just wants to see how Romo plays against the Pats. If he plays well, I think the contract will be as good as done.

I think the contract gets done over the bye week. I believe that will give
Romo 16 full games under his belt. If he pulls out some more magic againts the Pats he has a serious pay day ahead of him IMO

Does anyone know the deadline to sign players this year and have part of their bonus added to this years total?

I would love for Mosely to say WHEN Jerrah even discussed the Franchise Tag. I frankly bet its not happened and Mosely is just making that up.

I thought Mosley and Romo were friends. Didn't someone say Carrie Underwood stayed at Mosley's place when she was in town?

Mosley clearly has a great connection with Jerry. Hell, Jerry told him who we were going to draft the night before the draft.

If they are clsoe on the guaranteed money then this deal gets done. Its not as if this is critical mass. Its October and we have until March to get this done. Thats 5 months and even if it goes all teh way to then we still have the exclusive rights tag to stall for more time.

With Adams we just used the tag to keep other teams at bay and negotiate.

In fact, hearing that they are close on guaranteed cash 5 months out is the best news short of an extension announcement.

How long do we have to get his contract done so that we can use this year's cap room? It would be a big Big BIG mistake imo if we don't use this year's cap room to get part of his salary paid. We are going to have some other big time contracts to pay for later on too! Don't want to go back to salary cap hell any sooner than necessary if we can avoid it.

That's an irrelevant issue, because we can push any leftover cap room forward using the LTBE loophole.

So, if we pushed through leftover cap room, how much would be looking at next year? It's been reported that without UFAs signed we'd be at $28 million, but I imagine that's without this year's 12.8 being pushed through.

Could we seriously be looking at $40 million under?

I'm not sure how that works, but I don't think you can push all your cap room from one year to the next. I think it's a percentage.

But, like I said, I don't know how that stuff works.

It has to be done in an unreached incentive that players won't reach. Correct me if I'm wrong adam. However, 12 mil. is alot of unreached to put in contracts.
