Who Has The Thickest Playbook in the NFL?
August 3, 2007 12:28 PM

Some of you might recall hearing that Commanders offensive coordinator Al Saunders produced a 700-page playbook last season. And apparently the pictures were stunning.

I'm told the first 350 pages were a breezy read, but several improbable gadget plays at the midway point caused the playbook to lose momentum.

The good news is that Saunders recently explained how simple it was to learn his offense. Even several sportswriters grasped several of the concepts after a brief tutorial from the offensive guru.

Wondering if Saunders may have been a bit wordy, I called several sources around the league to determine the lengths of other playbooks. The Cowboys came in at about 240 pages, the Chargers 300 and the 49ers were somewhere close to 400 pages.

The bottom line is that players don't spend a lot of time with their playbooks after training camp. The offense is usually installed once during minicamps and then again during training camp.

Back with more fun-filled information later this afternoon.

Al Saunders
