Will Parcells raid the Cowboys?
December 19, 2007 2:01 PM

Just hung up the phone with a scout who used to work under Bill Parcells. He said not to rule out Cowboys offensive line/assistant head coach Tony Sparano as a candidate for the Falcons' head coaching position.

Sparano has had at least three offers to become an offensive coordinator over the past two years, but owner Jerry Jones refused to let him out of his contract. Sparano was Parcells' play-caller last season, and he served as his constant sounding board.

Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten has told me on several occasions that Sparano has a "presence" that players respond to. It also doesn't hurt Sparano's chances that three of his offensive linemen will start in the Pro Bowl.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank might prefer a sexier name, but he already has that with Parcells. Sparano has earned the respect of a lot of people across the league, so don't be shocked if this happens.

The same scout also thought Cowboys director of scouting Jeff Ireland would be a candidate for the GM position.

Ireland was here before parcells showed up, parcells promoted him essentially not hired him.

I dont think ireland would leave this organization right now.

Do teams typically pull rookie GMs from the scouting department? It doesn't seem that Ireland would have a complete skillset for being a GM. Or is that how it's typically done?

I think both of these scenarios is quite possibile. Ireland is definitely a GM candidate. He knows talent and would be great in Atlanta under Parcells. Sparano has tenure in the league and would fit under the guidance of Parcells. Let the windfall begin.

Parcells doesn't hire based on past experience, per say. He hires based on his ability to work with certain individuals. IE, they have to fit into his system. His way of doing things. To me, Irelands experience as a GM would not matter. Parcells would likely see that as a plus because he would then be able to teach him how he wants it done. Ireland's draw is his ability to evaluate talent and that, my friends, is the biggest asset you can have in the NFL if you are not a player. Ireland is never going to have the chance to be the GM here in Dallas. This is a Jones Family affair. That position is never going to be available to anybody other then one of the Jones boys IMO. If offered, Ireland would be a fool's fool not to take such a job IMO. The only reason I could see hm not taking it is if he just couldn't stand to work with the pressure Parcells brings on you.

Same goes for Sparano IMO. He will never be more then the AHC in Dallas. Wade it the HC until such time as Garrett comes on line (assuming Garrett is still available). If Garrett leaves, then Wade stays and Sparano is still nothing more then AHC. He will not be allowed to leave to become somebody else's AHC but if he were offered a HC job, he would likewise be a fool if he turned it down IMO.

We could theoretically lose Ireland, Garrett and Sparano (maybe more) all in one off season.

Sporano yes, he will be moving on at some point. there is no way we lose him and garret. i just dont see jerry ever allowing that.

as far as ireland goes, he is in the drivers seat here. I dont see why he would want to leave, jerry will bump up his pay if he has to.

again, ireland was here before parcells. Just like pioli and belichick were with the jets before parcells got there, and belichick promptly took pioli with him to the pats when he left.

Regardless of what happens with Parcells, you can bet your paycheck that the Fins will be trying to talk to Garrett this offseason. If the Giants don't win in the playoffs, it's likely they too will be trying to land Garrett IMO.

Why doesn't Bill go and raid the Patriots instead.

Yeah I agree, I dont think there is any debate about Garrett getting interviews. he is in a situation thouh where he only has to take the best job, because he already is in line for one of the premiere jobs in all of sports.

When you win other teams cherry pick your organization, coaches, players, scouts, trainers...everything. We have had it done to us and we have done it to other people.

Well you never know, Pepper johnson has a good reputation as a coach, so you never know.

I think parcells will look for guys from all over like he did when he was here. he knows a ton of people so thinking he would just take our guys is out of fear, I fear it to but I am not worried about ireland.

If Ireland wanted to leave it would be truly to be a GM not to sit under Parcells thumb as the defacto GM.

Sparano, would 100% be there OC if Parcells is hired... You can book that.

Not as long as he's under contract with Dallas. Jerry only has to let him go for a head coaching gig, not a coordinator position.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did. He's gone as far as he can possibly go in this organization. He'll never be a general manager here. He's far too young and ambitious to be content with a glass ceiling.

Yeah I can see why he would leave and from a career sense it makes sense. I guess I am hoping he will see the oppotunity to maybe become the guy who is the backbone of one of the better teams in the nfl for a few years.

Again though, he is as far as he will go. Its too bad though. Someday jerry wont be here and stephen jones will run the team and I believe he will hire a general manager, or maybe just a vp that runs personnell while he just takes care of the same type of stuff he does now, contracts...etc...

I'm inclined to agree, I think they'll do their best sales pitch of trying to lure Garrett away. Frankly, I, like everyone else on here, am hoping that Jones will be able to find a way to convince him to stay, and while the money Jones may offer him to stay will be tempting, it may not be just a money issue though. Time will tell...
