Brooking should be a better fit than Thomas

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

First off, let me acknowledge a far more important and potentially tragic story that is emerging on Florida's Gulf Coast, where two NFL players have apparently been lost at sea. One of the players, Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper, is represented by the same agency that had the late Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams.

AFC West blogger Bill Williamson, who covered Williams when he played for the Broncos, confirmed with agent Troy Asmus that Cooper was one of four boaters missing Sunday. Anyway, it just felt wrong to start blogging away about the NFC East when something like this was unfolding. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those four men.

And as we make an awkward transition, I did think that Tim MacMahon of ***BANNED-URL*** made a valid point about the Cowboys' news inside linebacker, Keith Brooking. There's a tendency to basically say the Cowboys replaced one aging player (Zach Thomas) with another -- and that's accurate. But Thomas always seemed like a fish out of water in Wade Phillips' 3-4. As MacMahon points out, Brooking enjoyed two of his best seasons working under Phillips. He's played the weakside inside linebacker spot before, so this shouldn't take a huge adjustment.

Like Thomas, Brooking's known as an excellent guy to have in the locker room. Thomas wasn't able to make an immediate impact in that regard. Now we'll see if Brooking approaches things differently.

Dallas Cowboys, 09 free agency, Keith Brooking, Zach Thomas, Troy Asmus, Marquis Cooper, Darrent Williams, Bill Williamson

Thomas was a little out of sync at the start of the year it seemed. I hope Brooking can play like his days in the 3-4 under Wade?

I think Brooking will out perform what we got out of Thomas and the contract is super cheap.

Well let's see what happens, I'd still like us to draft an ILB. If we had kept our 1st rounder, we'd have had a shot at one of the 3 good ones this year. Ray (probably no shot), Cushing and Laurinaitis. Oh well.

I must admit, I have not really followed the career of Brookings, however talking to my oldest son, he is quite supportive of move. I can say this, although I really iked Zach intensity he often got swallowed up in the trenches due to his small stature. So with that said, the size differet alone is a major factor. If he plays like I hear from some of you guys, then it could be a really good aquisition.

He'll do good..not that i have followed him but when i would watch the Falcons play cause of Mike Vick or they were on ESPN, this guy was always making tackles on defense, hes a good acquisition, hopefully he plays to his potential of a Highmotor Tackler he is.....and hes way bigger than lil Zach
