Steve (LI)
when do you leave for Giants camp? and for how long will you be attending?
Mosley (12:01 PM)
I'm planning to watch the Eagles practice this afternoon and then drive to Albany for tomorrow's practices. Giants are off today.
Ryan (Collegeville, PA)
How did Maclin look running routes and coming out of his breaks? Also who do you think will make a bigger impact with the Eagles this season Maclin or Gibson?
Mosley (12:02 PM)
I certainly think Maclin will make the bigger impact. Gibson's flashed during camp, but Maclin's a more complete player. Maclin's having to learn not to break off routes. He was taught to sort of react to the defense in the spread offense. He'll be fine.
Matt (St Pete FL)
Simple question (I hope) - is the Cowboys OL good enough (and deep enough) to help them win the NL East?
Mosley (12:03 PM)
The starters are good enough to help the Cowboys be in the thick of things. But the depth is a major issue. I'm much more impressed with the Eagles depth here in Bethlehem than I was with the Cowboys. If Marc Colombo or Flozell Adams goes down, Cowboys are in big trouble.
Kevin Rosenberger (Pittsburgh, PA)
Im missing training camp for the first time being in pitt for college...so how does my team look??? i need an honest to god opinion on chances this year and how my defense and offense are dealing with the adversity being thrown a tthem in all directions?? Thank you very muchKevin M.
Mosley (12:06 PM)
Kevin: I think Joe Mays and Omar Gaither can handle Stew Bradley's spot. And I wasn't expecting a lot of Cornelius Ingram this year anyway. Guys like Nick Cole and Max Jean-Gilles are the reason Andy Reid and Co. aren't freaking out about injuries on the 0-line. And believe it or not, Winston Justice actually looks OK in this camp.
Chris (Annapolis, MD)
Which Commanders do you see as potential "break-out" canidates to earn a trip to the pro bowl? (not Cooley, Portis kind of guys, but other players yet to make it to Hawaii)
Mosley (12:08 PM)
I certainly think Chris Samuels is good enough to play his way back in there. But he's not a breakout candidate. Hmmm...Maybe LaRon Landry or Chris Horton could get it done. Coaches around the league that I talk to love the way Horton plays. He didn't really show up on film at UCLA. But he's a playmaker. I think London Fletcher should finally go to the Pro Bowl, but that wouldn't be a breakout type thing. Devin Thomas would be a LONG shot.
John (Woodbridge)
What have you been hearing about Orakpo from the Skins' camp? Do you think 5 sacks are within reach?
Mosley (12:08 PM)
Doing fine. It will take a little while for him to comfortable standing up a lot. And I think five sacks is absolutely doable. I'd be shooting for eight.
Kenny (Philly)
Matt, you are one of the only writers I have seen choose Demps over Jones for the other starting safety spot next to Mikell why do you think Demps wins the job?
Mosley (12:09 PM)
Just going by what I see. Demps got the most reps with the first team when I was watching. And he's getting his hands on a lot of throws. In my mind, he has the edge.
Jimmy (Nutley, NJ)
Does Lorenzo Booker make the team?
Mosley (12:10 PM)
Not if the Eagles can come up with another solution as a third back. I don't think they want to go into a season with only two backs because of Westbrook's injury history. But the presence of Leonard Weaver gives you some flexibility. It will be nice to have an athletic fullback.
Jeff Kitchen (Lewisville, TX (Dallas))
Do you know how serious the sprain is to Trent Cole's shoulder? How big of an impact will all the EAGLES' injuries have and where do you have them ranked in the East?
Mosley (12:11 PM)
I didn't get the sense that it was that big a deal, Jeff. I have the Eagles second behind the Giants in the East.
Jimmy (Nutley, NJ)
Do you see anyone with some name recognition getting cut in the Beast (like a Juqua Parker)?
Mosley (12:11 PM)
Reggie Brown comes to mind.
Luke (Rochester, NY)
I am wondering how Mccoy looked in camp this far? I am worried about how Westbrook will hold up or be able to recover from injury due to his age!
Mosley (12:13 PM)
McCoy's had an excellent start, but he still has a ways to go. I like that he already has good vision. He's also starting to get a better feel for what defenses are trying to do to him. And Westbrook's a tremendous influence -- and running back.
jason (philly)
Do you really think Eli is deserving of his new contract? I know the guy won a superbowl but so did Trent Dilfer on the back of another good defense. Overrated and overpaid.
Mosley (12:14 PM)
The "philly" next to your name gave you away. C'mon, don't compare Eli Manning to Trent Dilfer. Manning made some huge plays in that Super Bowl -- and during the playoff run. He's also cut down on his interceptions. Great decision maker and an excellent leader. Dilfer is a bad, bad comparison. So yes, he deserves the contract extension.
alex (kilmarnick)
do you have any dogs? if so, what kind?
Mosley (12:15 PM)
Chocolate Lab named Trooper. Named after former Baylor defensive back.
Darrick Knight (Durham,NC)
I heard Sheldon Brown is looking great. Should the eagles just pay him?
Mosley (12:16 PM)
Eagles don't work like that. Only in rare cases (Peters, McNabb) do they restructure. Brown's locked in. He's not getting a new deal.
Jon (Utica, NY)
Is McNabb's replacement on the team right now?
Mosley (12:18 PM)
Jon, I think Kevin Kolb will be given every opportunity to be that guy. That said, I still think the Eagles will draft a young quarterback in the next year or so and try to develop him. McNabb's got a couple years left, but remember that the Eagles didn't put any extra length on his contract. They need Kolb to show up big time in the preseason. And that's tough when you're injured.
josh (salt lake city UT)
What are the chances Jeremy Jarmon sees the field this year for the Commanders?
Mosley (12:18 PM)
I think he's more of a project guy this season. Very athletic, very rusty.
Evan (West Chester, PA)
Do you think the Eagles will regret not spending past high draft picks on linebackers? The Eagles haven't drafted a LB in the 1st or 2nd round in the past decade besides the bust Matt McCoy and their depth is fairly weak at LB this year.
Mosley (12:20 PM)
The Steelers have shown that you don't have to draft all your linebackers in the first round. I don't think the Eagles' plan for drafting linebackers is flawed. Get them in the third or fourth rounds and then let them develop for a couple years. I think Gocong, Bradley and Jordan have all progressed nicely over the last couple years.
jack (Silver Spring)
Wow, Matt where or how do the Giants get any love from you? You spend a month with the Cowboys, almost a week with the Eagles and now only one practice with the G-men? What's a matter Coughlin mark you late once!!
Mosley (12:22 PM)
I didn't spend a week with the Cowboys. Dropped in a couple days each week because San Antonio's an easy little trip for me. I've spent two full days with the Eagles and I'll be spending Wednesday and Thursday with the Giants before flying into Baltimore to watch the Skins-Ravens game. But every team wants more coverage. I get that. And I'm cool with it.
Dennis (Dumont, NJ)
Any news on how the depth chart behind Brandon Jacobs is shaking out?
Mosley (12:22 PM)
I will ask about that, Dennis. Bradshaw's still in the No. 2 spot last time I checked in, which was two days ago.
Mo (Herndon VA)
Is Cooley going to have another pro bowl season? or is that really dependent on how Campbell does?
Mosley (12:23 PM)
Cooley's one of the best tight ends in the game -- and he's one of Campbell's favorite targets. Sure, I think he'll go to the Pro Bowl with Witten.
daniel (blacksburg)
what are the chances macho harris makes the team with the eagles?
Mosley (12:24 PM)
I think he'll make the team in some capacity. I guess it could be on the practice squad. But I saw him make a couple plays on the ball Monday. Pretty impressive.
Adam (Columbus, OH)
Who cares about Training Camp story lines, its fantasy football draft time! Who is the top QB,RB, and WR fantasy wise in the Beast in your opinion?
Mosley (12:25 PM)
Tony Romo for sure if you're just talking about fantasy stats. Then I'd go with Westbrook because he's a dual threat. I'd also have a hard time passing up Marion Barber because of all the goal-line carries he'll get. At receiver, give me Jackson.
Allan (New Milford,CT)
Matt,Do the Cowboys have the best TE tandem in NFL? Is it possible MartyB makes Pro Bowl?
Mosley (12:26 PM)
I think Bennett and Witten will be able to put a lot of pressure on the defense. Could two tight ends from the same team make the Pro Bowl? I suppose so, but that would be tough with guys such as Cooley out there. It might take Bennett another year before he breaks through.
Drew (Philly)
Over/under games Brian Westbrook plays in: 12
Mosley (12:27 PM)
Over
Daniel ((Brooklyn, NYC))
Any thoughts on the progression of Skins O-line guys such as Reinhardt, Bridges, and Heyer? It seems like a lot of weight may fall on their shoulders.
Mosley (12:27 PM)
I'll take a long look at that. Bridges can be a swing guy for you. Heyer has to take the next step this season. I'll be watching those guys pretty closely.
william (frederick)
how many interceptions for each QB in the divison this year? oh and TDs as well
Mosley (12:29 PM)
Romo will be a 36 TD, 17 INT guy.Manning checks in at 26 TDs, eight INTsMcNabb will have 25 touchdowns, 11 INTsCampbell 20 touchdowns, 11 INTs
Walter (Boone, NC)
Will the Eagles D be any different with the death of Jim Johnson?
Mosley (12:29 PM)
I'm planning to visit with Sean McDermott about the transition this afternoon. I'll let you know what he says on the NFC East blog.
Drew (Philly)
Any early impressions on how Sean McDermott is doing? Did you notice if he does anything different then what Johnson has done in the past?
Mosley (12:31 PM)
I'm told he's extremely organized. Very intense guy, but he doesn't go around screaming or anything. Wears a bucket hat to protect him from the sun. I've heard a couple guys compare him to Harbaugh.
Anthony (Dallas)
Matt.......7-8 wins for Baylor this year? Big game at Wake to begin the season
Mosley (12:31 PM)
I'll settle for six and a bowl game. You have to start somewhere, and that's as good a place as any. Robert Griffin is the real deal. He's made it safe to be a Bear again.
JB (NYC)
Whoooaaa... Romo - 36 TD?!? When did they trade for Randy Moss?
Mosley (12:32 PM)
Bennett, Witten, Felix, Austin, Hurd, Williams. It can be done. I think Bennett might be the third-leading receiver. He'll be huge in the red zone.
Walter (Boone, NC)
Jim or John?
Mosley (12:33 PM)
I was comparing him to John Harbaugh of the Ravens.
Pat (NY)
Who is Manning throwing those 26 TDs to?
Mosley (12:34 PM)
Boss, Nicks, Steve Smith, Hixon. And Ramses Barden could emerge as a threat in the red zone. Seriously. A 6-6 guy around the goal line. Give me one of those.
moe (nj)
what's he deal with shawn andrews, is going to play this year?
Mosley (12:35 PM)
who knows? The guy's a huge talent, but I'm not sure how much he likes football. And that's a major, major issue when a guy doesn't. I think he just wants to show up, play in games and collect a paycheck. But that's just one man's opinion.
JB (NYC)
C'mon Matt... Did you really just go Sam Hurd on me?
Mosley (12:36 PM)
He's been OUTSTANDING in camp. He's one of my picks to click.
Daniel (Temple, TX)
How do you see the standings in the Beast shaking out by season's end?
Mosley (12:36 PM)
1. Giants2. Eagles 3. Cowboys 4. Skins
Mal (Passaic, New Jerz [via mobile]
Matty ice, I love the work playa. It seems like the injury bug is making its nest in Bethlaham, how significant is the injury to Trent Cole, are my birds putting up a smoke screen? Also how is Chris Clemmons coming along; he was too inconsistant last year.
Mosley (12:37 PM)
I liked what I saw from Clemons yesterday, Mal. Very quick off the ball and he ended up pressuring the QB on several occasions. Trent Cole will be fine. Tough, tough guy.
Hoffman (D.C.)
It seems like each year the Washington Commanders have more hamstring issues than the rest of the Beast combined. Any ideas what's up with that or how they can fix it?
Mosley (12:38 PM)
Lots of humidity in Ashburn this time of year. And lots of receivers with fast-twitch muscles. It happens. But you're right, the Skins seem to have their fair share.
Jake (VA Beach)
Eli complimented Barden out of all the WRs FIRST today when asked. Is it too much of a jump from Cal-Poly to the NFL for Barden to potentially have a Colston like impact from year one?
Mosley (12:40 PM)
I think Colston was a little ahead of Barden coming out of school. But Barden has the work ethic and size to be a factor at some point this season. Especially if Manning gets comfortable with him early.
Dmyth13 (Phila)
Are you going to answer any of my questions? Would it help if I said you were awesome or something?
Mosley (12:40 PM)
So this was the question you wanted answered? Really?
Jon (Utica, NY)
I hear David Carr hasn't been that good in Camp so far, is there a chance that Woodson or even, gasp, Rhett Bomar will be his backup at season's start?
Mosley (12:42 PM)
I've said it a million times. Bomar will be a better NFL quarterback than Stephen McGee. And I don't have much faith in Carr. Of that bunch, Bomar will be the third guy behind Carr.
westy (FL)
Does Gibson have a legitimate shot of making this team? Where does he fit?
Mosley (12:42 PM)
He'd have to play on all the special teams. But he's making plays in practice. That's a good start. They'll find him a spot if he keeps this up.
Eric (CT)
Matt, did you just say Manning would have 26 TD/8 INT? I love Eli, but that would be a dramatic reduction in his picks. Anything specific you have seen either in his off-season or the system that leads you to feel that he will limit his turnovers this year?
Mosley (12:43 PM)
That's not that drastic. Off the top of my head, I think he had 23 and 10 last season.
bleedgreeeen (nj)
What do you think about the eagles new QB Nagy?
Mosley (12:43 PM)
I'll check him out this afternoon. Not familiar with his Arena League work.
jimmy (roslyn,ny)
what have you heard if anything about what kind of impact Travis Beckam will have with the Gmen this season and how has he looked in camp so far?
Mosley (12:45 PM)
I haven't heard a lot about how he's doing. I'll obviously check him out for you tomorrow when I'm in Albany. I'm told that Gilbride would like to move him around quite a bit and play him as sort of an H-back type guy.
Steve (FL)
The Eagles ran ST practice yesterday afternoon and I think you observed. What's the KR (demps, hobbs, maclin) and PR (Jackson, Maclin) situation look like?
Mosley (12:46 PM)
I don't like the fact that Maclin muffed a punt and mishandled another one yesterday. But don't ask him about it. Demps muffed one, too. I'd have the most confidence in Hobbs when it comes to returning kicks. I think he can get it done.
Josh (Dallas)
BeasterMaster I gotta back up Dmyth13 on that one! you told us about your dog, but you won't answer a legit question like this:BeastMaster, just how serious is the lack of cohesiveness? with the Eagles O Line? It was a question posed to all the regular Eagle fan bloggers for the past couple of months which was usually quickly dismissed, however, as a lot of us suspected it does appear to be an issue! On a side note, which do you think is more likely, Rangers winning the Wild Card or by some chance taking the West from my beloved Halos?
Mosley (12:48 PM)
Josh, I think the lack of cohesion on the offensive line has to be a huge worry for the Eagles. Shawn Andrews might miss the entire preseason and that's a bad thing for a guy who was supposed to come back strong. The one thing that would give you hope is the quality depth with guys such as Cole and Jean-Gilles. And believe it or now, Justice showed up with some attitude. Looks pretty good to me.
Sanjay (Iladel)
All reports out of Lehigh talk about how DJax cannot be covered by anyone on campus, which is surprising considering Eagles have one of the best and easily the deepest secondary in the league. Is he the number 1 WR Eagles fans have been yearning for since the Torrence Small-Todd Pinkston days.
Mosley (12:50 PM)
Well, you had a No. 1 guy briefly in No. 81. But yes, I think Jackson's a legit No. 1. But the good news is that you could end up with two No. 1s. If Maclin can catch up to speed, you might have a tremendous tandem. Sort of a Fitzgerald-Boldin thing -- if you will.
Steve (LI)
5th and Final attempt here...Good things being said about Barden, including his most scrutinized fault about getting off the line in press coverage, its said that hes doing very well there. Any chance we see more of him that first thought? Especially with Eli mentioning his name first of all the receivers when asked how their doing?
Mosley (12:51 PM)
Steve, if the guy can jump up and catch a ball in the red zone, then you'll see plenty of him. So yes, I think the Giants are hopeful he can contribute right away.
Daniel ((Brooklyn, NYC))
Can Hackett make an impact for the Skins this season? He's got size and past success with Zorn.
Mosley (12:53 PM)
Depends on what you mean by impact. He could give you 20 catches or so. But he's never been a big numbers guy in the league, so I don't expect that to change in Washington. He's just a good guy to have around for depth purposes.
Hoffman (D.C.)
What are your thoughts on Randy Thomas? Knee and neck surgery is one thing, but Bugels "concerned" comment is really worrying.
Mosley (12:54 PM)
The guy's a 33-year-old guard. What do you expect? He's breaking down a little bit. Skins just trying to squeeze a few more drops out of him. Bugel's just being honest.
Marc (City of Brotherly Love)
So will we see Justice starting week one?
Mosley (12:54 PM)
There's a decent chance.
Alex (Washington, DC)
My lord, I just saw a Fitzgerald/Boldin comparison for Desean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. I'm currently preparing myself for a Colt Brennan to Tom Brady comparison, Tashard Choice to Ladainian Tomlinson comparison, and Austin Miles to Andre Johnson comparison. Seriously, be more hyperbolic next time.
Mosley (12:55 PM)
I didn't say they would be as good. I'm just saying the Cards have two legit No. 1-type guys. The Eagles could end up with a similar situation.
Luis (Santa Barbara, CA)
MattMo, I'm really looking forward to seeing Kitna get a lot of PT this Thursday. Also, if Stanback doesn't cease an opportunity to shine this preseason is it safe to say he's the first on the fast train out of town?
Mosley (12:56 PM)
I'd be really surprised if Stanback makes the team. You can't depend on the guy. Gets hurt too much -- and he drops balls.
Marc (City of Brotherly love)
Will J. Maclin come close to D. Jackson's rookie season?
Mosley (12:56 PM)
I don't think so. It might take him a little more time. Jackson was coming from a pro-style offense. Maclin's coming from the spread.
Yatin (LA)
Last year (and in college as I followed him at Cal), DeSean has a tendency to go down or run out of bounds before getting tackled. Obviously given his size, it's important he avoid taking big hits, but do you think with his added muscle he's gonna try to gain those extra few yards this year?
Mosley (12:57 PM)
That would be the least of my concerns. He's a pure speed receiver. If he wants to step out of bounds, let him. Beats the alternative of him possibly getting banged up.
UberSamoyed (Frisco, TX)
You just predicted 36/17 for Romo. I can understand the 36, it's a bit optimistic but why not. But, the 17 puts him almost exactly at his 2007 pace when he went 36/19. I just don't see him flinging the rock 520 times in 2009. And, I suspect that we will see him learn to make better decisions with the ball this year. If he throws the ball less this year and even improves slightly in his decision-making, then his interception % should drop..perhaps drastically. Care to redo the numbers?
Mosley (12:58 PM)
Nope. I'll stick with then for one day. I knew that would bring you into the chat, Uber.
Marc (City of Brotherly love)
Has Jason Babin done anything in camp? I was surprised by this under the radar move.
Mosley (1:00 PM)
Babin's career has pretty much flamed out. Eagles simply looking for some fumes. Every now and then a team likes to take a chance on a desperate player. Cowboys did it with Marc Colombo a few years ago and it's worked out pretty well. Kudos to Parcells for that move. And Sparano of course.
Justin (MA)
How did Bobby Carpenter look last week? I think this could be his year
Mosley (1:01 PM)
He's having the best camp of his career. He'd probably be the guy to step in if either Bradie James or Keith Brooking went down. You guys have been great. We almost made it to 300 questions. I have to prepare for my Albany trip. Talk to you soon.
when do you leave for Giants camp? and for how long will you be attending?
Mosley (12:01 PM)
I'm planning to watch the Eagles practice this afternoon and then drive to Albany for tomorrow's practices. Giants are off today.
