Commish on Tank Johnson
October 8, 2007 2:45 PM

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he talked to Cowboys defensive tackle Tank Johnson last week, but he has not decided whether to reduce his eight-week suspension.

"You can say all the things you want," said Goodell. "But it's how you act. He needs to make better decisions...I think he understands that."

If Goodell reduces the suspension to six weeks, Johnson could be eligible to play against the Vikings on Oct. 21.

Goodell said he would be out of the office the rest of the week and wouldn't be reviewing the case until next week at the earliest.

Asked which way he was leaning, Goodell said, "I'm not leaning any way."

Commish to review Tank's case
This from Calvin Watkins in Buffalo ...

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will review Tank Johnson's case next week and decide if the defensive tackle's suspension should be reduced. Johnson is hoping to have his eight-game suspension cut to six games.

As of now, Johnson is eligible to return Nov. 4 when the Cowboys play at Philadelphia.

I doubt it. Yes Hostile, we must embrace it even when it truly effects the Cowboys. :laugh2:

I'd be happy with a 1-game reduction so he could play after the bye week. That seems fair.

I would like to see it reduced but if it stands it stands and Tank would have no one to blame but himself. I look forward to seeing him in the lineup and hope that he has learned from past mistakes but I really can't blame Goodell for the actions of Tank.

Is he dodging us? What next week, he has a dentist appointment and then his anniversary vacation. Come on Roger.

I feel this commissioner isn't impartial and can be unfair to different team.

He says he's not leaning towards any way but makes a comment like that: "You can say all the things you want," said Goodell. "But it's how you act. He needs to make better decisions...I think he understands that." To me this will be a full suspension. I wonder if we beat the patriots will he let tank back in the league or will he decide to keep him for the full period. Having those kinds doubts is upsetting.

I just don't see a reduction coming. I'd love to see it, but i think goodell sticks to his guns.

Its refreshing to see the NFL commish actually doing his job, but I can't say that I agree with the manner in which hes doing things. Tank Johnson's possession of a weapon off the field, IMHO is less severe than the Pats spy-gate. Tank's actions lower the integrity of the perception of NFL players, however coaches cheating and stealing signals disgraces the integrity of the game.

I understand the no-tolerance policy on performance enhancing drugs, but a QB coach using it to spice up his love life - A) shouldn't have been publicized B) has no affect on the game itself C) is the same penalty Merriman earned.

I embrace the shift in policy, but I don't understand his logic.

The Commissioner is waiting for the outcome of the Pats vs Cowboys game. If the Cowboys beat "his" Pats, Tank gets the full 8 games. If the Pats win, Tank's suspension will be reduced to 6 games.

I almost said the same thing, but they already said it's an eight game suspension that can be reduced to six. That said, I find it highly unlikely he gets any reduction just for the fact that he is a Cowboy now. I refer to the Wilson/Belicheat lopsided penalties.

:hammer:

I'd also understand if the Commish doesn't reduce it at all though. Tank did get pulled over for speeding (and suspicion of DWI) after he told the Commish he'd be the man of the year.

Didn't Tank say he has gotten rid of all of his guns until after he is finished playing football??

For someone that has been around guns his whole life, that is a significant "action" I would say.

A significant change is life style. He seems to be trying.

However, I am with Doomsday101 on this, Tank has to pay the consequences of his actions, even if it is the full 8 wks.

I agree...Sooo much hypocritical actions from the league office on many an issue but hard to guage which he'll go on this.

I just think that the vast majority of players keep out of trouble and will never serve a day of suspensions in their careers. If you don't want to be in this situation then stay out of trouble if not then the player only has himself to blame. Seem that too many are making the victim out to be the player who can't seem to stay out of trouble

He got rif od the guns just like Belichik got rid of the tapes. No suspension was in order, so the league actually owes Tank back pay. :D

he isn't going to be in playing shape anyway you cut it regardless of when he comes back, it will be probably two games before we know what he is gonna be for us. I am pulling for the reduction for obvious reasons.
