It's important to read between the lines when Jerry Jones is talking because what he's actually saying doesn't always make a lot of sense. A lengthy non-answer to my recent question about the futures of left tackle Flozell Adams and safety Ken Hamlin told me everything I needed to know heading into the draft.

Jones refused to guarantee either player a roster spot in 2010, which leads me to believe he'd at least consider moving on without one or both of them. The Cowboys liked what they saw from Doug Free when he filled in for injured right tackle Marc Colombo last season. As only he can, Jones explained that Free's a little more "left tacklish than right tacklish," which is to say he has excellent feet and operates well in space.

Jones believes that Free's capable of being the full-time starter at left tackle, and he confirmed that during the recent owners meetings. But does that mean he's ready to release a perennial Pro Bowl player in Adams to launch the Free Era? It's one of the biggest decisions Jones will make this offseason, and the upcoming draft should offer us some clues on how he'll proceed.

The Cowboys need to add more quality depth to the offensive line. Offensive tackle Robert Brewster, a third-round pick in '09, is returning from a torn pectoral muscle that he suffered while lifting weights. There's a decent chance the Cowboys will draft an offensive lineman in the first or second round because this line's starting to show some age. Left guard Kyle Kosier's entering the final year of his contract and right guard Leonard Davis turns 32 in September.

If the Cowboys can create enough depth along the offensive line, they may part ways with Adams, who collects false starts and fines at an alarming rate. Jones also mentioned the fact that Davis is capable of sliding over to left tackle, although I think that's a stretch at this point in his career.

Adams, who turns 35 next month, is due a $2.5 million roster bonus in June and his base salary for 2010 is $5 million. That's why Jones has a little breathing room before he has to make a decision.

"We just have not addressed decisions of that nature," Jones said at the owners meetings. "Mulled them over, but just haven’t addressed it. Haven’t had to. It’s not been compelling. As we get closer to OTAs, as we get a read on how we do in drafting. When all of that comes to bear, then we’ll make some decisions if we’ve got to basically make room, so to speak."

I don't think that statement is good news for either Adams or Hamlin, who is scheduled to make $5.59 million in 2010. That's a huge salary for a player who's turned in back-to-back average seasons. In recent weeks, sources with the team have expressed to me their excitement over second-year safety Michael Hamlin (no relation). There's a belief that Hamlin has the instincts to turn into a playmaker at safety. That said, it would not surprise me at all if the Cowboys selected South Florida safety Nate Allen at No. 27 overall.

The Cowboys like Allen and Rutgers cornerback Devin McCourty at that spot. Now if an offensive tackle such as Bruce Campbell starts to slip, which could totally happen, the Cowboys will have an interesting decision to make. I think they'd lean toward taking one of the defensive backs. And regarding all this speculation about the Cowboys moving up to take wide receiver Dez Bryant, the folks I've spoken to at Valley Ranch don't see it happening.

But pay close attention to what the Cowboys do in the first few rounds. It should be a pretty good indicator of what's going to happen with Adams and Hamlin.

"They’re on the roster and [we] have not made a decision as to them not being on the roster," said Jones. "And have not given any more consideration there at this time than you have just your overall roster. So you could get some bad information at this juncture if you said somebody said they’re not going to be with you. It’s just speculation, using the logic of what’s caused them to be at issue anyway."

So does that quote pretty much clear things up for you guys? No?

The bottom line is that Jones' refusal to give either player his endorsement is pretty revealing.

Pretty good article. I agree that what happens during the draft will have a domino effect with Ken Hamlin, for sure, and maybe Flozell, too.

And there are the two names .... McCourty and Allen. Of course, Hos mentioned McCourty several days ago as a guy they liked.

I think Mosely is right on target in this piece. Except maybe re: Campbell...

Can someone sell me on Nate Allen as a 1st rounder? Because I'm really not getting it. A guy who plays a non premium position who was good (but not great) in college and hasn't been able to workout for teams so we can gauge what kind of athlete he is.

When Mosely speaks, I rolly my eyes, smirk then tune him out.

When Mosely speaks around draft time, I listen ;)

Jones has mentioned this for years. He said it when he was signed.

But Davis has no desire to do so. He was even concerned he would have to do it in the Pro Bowl, so why is this even a consideration?

Sometimes when I read quotes from Jerry Jones, I feel like I am reading babbling from a mental patient trying to appear cognizant.

I can't believe they would not take Kyle Wilson over the other two DB's if he is available at 27. They have not even mentioned him.

I'm sure the same can be said for alot of teams that the draft will causes some changes. If Dallas drafts a S I would think Hamlin would be the likely man out leaving Dallas with the rookie selection as well as Sensabaugh, Ball,Watkins and last years rookie Mike Hamlin.

OT right now we have Flo, Free, McQuistan and Colombo. I think it is a bit tougher unless the team feels like McQuistan has a future with the team it would be hard cutting loose Flo, especially with Colombo coming off the injury he had this past season.

Do either Ken Hamlin or Flozell Adams have roster bonuses due this year and if so, what is the date they are due. That will be the ultimate factor in whether they stay or not. I can't see Jerry shelling out additional millions if he may be cutting you a few weeks later.

Hamlin's base salary in 2010 is $5.596 million and Adams' base is $5 million. Cap or no cap that is actual money Jerry would have to pay them. (also it looks like Flozell would get a $2.5 million roster bonus on June 1st).

Doug Free will make $550,000 next year so if Jerry feels it's close between what Flozell does and what Free can do, I think he'll go with writing the $550,000 check vs. a $7.5 million check.

Most likely assuming he won't still be there.

The tackle group is pretty weak after the 1st round. And a 2nd/3rd round guy like Vedhleer obviously needs time.

I cant believe Anthony Davis is completely off their board but theyd take that circus act Bruce Cambell

If the Cowboys really aren't seriously interested in Dez Bryant, Jerry is a PR masochist publicly showing all this interest in him ... because he's got a lot of Cowboy fans riled up thinking of the possibility. And if he falls to them and instead they take extremely unsexy pick like McCourty or Allen (who most draft publications are going to list as 2nd or 3rd rounders, accurately or inaccurately) it's going to be "Dallas picks Greg Ellis over Randy Moss Pt 2" all over the Dallas airwaves and newspapers.

Where did you see that Anthony Davis is completely off their boards?

I doubt that would bother Jerry in the least if the fans or media complain that he did not take Dez or not.

i dont believe that is the case,JJ is really interested in DB.roy williams has given him a lot of grief with his play and he cannot ignore a Wr like DB who might be the best in recent drafts.

I have a source. I cant say who but lets just say he has 1 million posts on here.

I think theyre making a big mistake. Get this guy full of piss and vinegar and hed tear it up.

he boldly proclaimed he’s the best tackle in the upcoming NFL Draft — and it’s not even close.

“I’m not just saying it because it’s me, I watch film, too,” Davis told The Star-Ledger. “If I felt it was somebody else, I would say it was him. But just watching the film, I think it’s like hands-down that I’m the best tackle in the country. I don’t think I’m wrong for saying it because I truly believe it.”

Reportedly Davis wasn't exactly beloved by his former coaches and teammates at Rutgers.

Personally, I think he's going to the Raiders at #8.

If you're not interested in Bryant don't draw so much attention to yourself with "private meals" and whatnot. It just strikes me as setting yourself up as a completely needless potential PR shellacking.

And I disagree ... I think it would bother Jerry if his customer base was upset. I think the only reason he brought in Parcells is because the fanbase was ready to revolt after the Campo years.

They are currently on the roster which means they are not off the roster. And as long as they are not off the roster, they are on it. We haven't talked about them being off the roster and have also not talked about them being on the roster so as long as we neither talk about them being on or off the roster, we have our roster set.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indeed had dinner scheduled with Dez Bryant on Wednesday. Also invited were NFL hopefuls Mike Iupati and Brandon LaFell and a varied assortment of prospects.

Not quite as cozy and intimate in that light, eh?

Every single spring, about this time, Dallas and, really, every NFL team brings in players for socials and workouts and, being extremely wealthy and hospitable, provide a group meal or two as well.

Only in Dallas does this somehow become proof of Dez's imminent arrival.
