Cowboys owner reaches out to Madden, Michaels

June 10, 2008 6:26 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

Speaking in front of the awkwardly named National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics this morning, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made some interesting comments about his new $1.1 billion stadium in Arlington. Jones, who is using public funds to pay for a quarter of the monstrous structure, said he could've built it for a paltry $700 million, but decided to pile on because of "perception."

And it's a good thing, too, since no one in the country knows he has any money. The following quotes, which were reported by SportsBusiness Daily, are ludicrous but thoroughly enjoyable:

"Only a fraction of football fans will ever set foot in it, but hundreds of millions will see it on television," Jones told the unsuspecting athletic directors. "How John Madden talks about it, and how Al Michaels talks about it, and let me assure you that after I've had some time with them, they'll know everything there is to know about it."

As SportsbyBrooks points out, Jones is basically saying he tossed in another $400 million so that Madden and Michaels would discuss the architecture. Jones traveled to faraway places like Lyon, France and Ratliff Stadium in Odessa for inspiration. And you haven't lived until you've heard him talk about the stunning facade at the Nice Airport.

I'm planning to take a tour of the stadium soon, so I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm guessing Mosely was trying to write a witty article. It's not.

:laugh2: This is like one of those movies made today that tries to turn itself into a cult classic campy kind of picture...but just never gets there because they don't understand some of those cult classic campy pictures of years ago were not trying to be that way type of deal.

For more than 30 minutes Tuesday, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones spoke to the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics at the Hilton Anatole, mixing humor with how-to stories to more than 2,000 people in attendance.

Jones told the crowd they have to "empty the bucket," in their attempts to lead athletic departments and raise funds.

He also shared a funny story from the 1992 preseason opener against Houston in Tokyo.

As he walked down to the field at the Tokyo Dome he saw an enormous trophy about four-feet high, and a much smaller one next to it. When he was told the winner got the big trophy, he said he went to Jimmy Johnson and tokd him to put in the regulars because he wanted to win that trophy.

"We hadn't won a thing before," Jones said.

Johnson explained to him the players would need to warm up to get ready to get back in. Well, the Cowboys lost and Jones admitted he "pouted" on the flight home.

"Seven months later we're standing there at the Rose Bowl, and the Commissioner is handing me the Lombardi Trophy," Jones said. "Jimmy leaned in and said, 'Now what trophy would you rather have, that one or this here Super Bowl trophy?'
