If you're into this sort of thing, John "The Professor" Clayton does a really nice job of attempting to explain the Oakland Raiders' offseason moves. In some circles (like here), the front office is taking a beating for all the money and draft picks that are being thrown around.

At this point, I would like to take a moment to let you know that not everyone in upper management has lost their minds. Unfortunately, the people with some common sense have been asked not to speak to or make eye contact with Al Davis.

I just received a text message from a source familiar with the DeAngelo Hall contract who described the guaranteed portion of the contract as "utterly ridiculous."

I'll see if I can come up with a firm number at some point this evening. When all is said and done, the Raiders might sit out rounds 2-7 of the NFL draft entirely. Oh, one more thing: Mr. Davis has fallen hard for Darren McFadden in recent weeks. I'll keep you posted on that front.

Raiders | D. Hall deal still not complete
Thu, 20 Mar 2008 11:48:27 -0700

Jim Trotter, of SportsIllustrated.com, reports the Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons CB DeAngelo Hall still have not reached an agreement on a deal that would send Hall to the Raiders for two draft picks. If a deal is not completed by Thursday, March 20, it is possible that the Raiders could end talks and move on, according to a team source. Hall remains in Oakland, Calif., and will meet with team officials Thursday, March 20.

If I had majority stock in the Raiders (Al Davis does not if I remember right) and all of this was going on, Al's trash would be out to the curb so fast his jumpsuit would make the garbageman jealous.

Actually, I was wondering a few weeks ago, who actually does own majority of the Raiders? Do you know off hand?

Talk about a passive investor . . . . whoever he/she is.

I think I read once that the original 8 owners of the team all have heirs to whom fall the majority share. Davis' share is larger than any of them individually, but not as a whole.

I could be wrong on that. I honestly am not sure.

That would sound about right.

Anyone who has a share larger than Al Davis would have fired him years ago.

Legally, the club is a limited partnership operated by Al Davis, who serves as president of the team's general partner, A.D. Football, Inc. The partnership is comprised of heirs of the original eight team partners. Although exact ownership stakes are not known, it has been reported that Davis currently owns 67 percent of the team's shares and is the only partner with the authority to make decisions.

Ed McGah, the last of the original eight general partners of the Raiders, died in September 1983. Upon his death, his interest was devised to a family trust, of which his son, E.J. McGah, was the trustee. The younger McGah was himself a part owner of the team, as a limited partner, and died in 2002. Several members of the McGah family filed suit against Davis in October 2003, alleging mismanagement of the team by Davis. The lawsuit sought to remove Davis as owner of the team, as well as monetary damages. Among their specific complaints, the McGahs alleged that Davis failed to provide them with detailed financial information previously provided to Ed and E.J. McGah.

The Raiders countered that—under the terms of the partnership agreement as amended in 1972—upon the death of the elder McGah in 1983, his general partner interest converted to that of a limited partner. The team continued to provide the financial information to the younger McGah as a courtesy, though it was under no obligation to do so.

The majority of the lawsuit was dismissed in April 2004, when an Alameda County Superior Court judge ruled that the case lacked merit since none of the other partners took part in the lawsuit. In October 2005, the lawsuit was settled out of court. The terms of the settlement are confidential, but it was reported that under its terms Davis purchased the McGah family's interest in the Raiders (approximately 31 percent), and for the first time owns a majority interest, speculated to be approximately 67 percent of the team. As a result of the settlement, confidential details concerning Al Davis and the ownership of the Raiders were not released to the public.

Recently, Davis has been attempting to sell the 31 percent ownership stake in the team he obtained from the McGah family. He has been unsuccessful in this effort, reportedly because the sale would not give the purchaser any control of the Raiders, even in the event of Davis's death. Full control of the team will be assumed by Davis's wife, Carol, upon his death.

There should be an injunction by the minority owners of the Raiders to have Davis removed base don mental health concerns. These moves are so bad they really can not even be compared to even Dan Snyder. He is paying twice what these guys are worth and giving them about 3 times as much guaranteed money. He has paid out franchise QB money in guarantees and btw, still doesn't have a clue as to if his QB is any good.

I really wonder that maybe he has gone a bit senile. Not sure if you can go a "bit" senile, actually. Maybe it's one of those things you have to go whole hog on or not at all.

The only other reason is that he's going for it one last time before he dies.

It's actually sad what's happened to that franchise over the past years.

The Raiders are easily the New York Knicks of the NFL. The ridiculas nature with which that team is run is just astounding.

I'm not shocked that he's after DMac though. I figured for a while now that was his goal. He's put himself in position to be able to take DMac now.

Okay, I did not know he had bought out the McGah's.

They're screwed.
