Cowboys and Indians: Chances of the Skins and the 'Boys opening up the new stadium to start the '09 season?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Welcome to the Beast chat. It's schedule day across the NFL. I think there's a one in three chance of that scenario happening. But I may get to the bottom of this before 7 p.m. ET!!

Chase : richmond virginia [via mobile]: The giants have made a lot of strong move so far in this offseason on defense, but with plaxicos legal troubles resulting in him being released and all the chatter about which wide reciever the giants are gonna get who do you think they will actually pick up or draft?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I think the Giants really like Heyward-Bey's ability to spread the field, but some experts (Mayock) have him going off the board well before the Giants pick. I think someone like Britt in the second is more of a possibility.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH): Rumors keep flying about Braylon Edwards going to the NFC East (Eagles or Giants), and if either team wants him I'm sure they can get him. But in terms of timing, do you think a deal for Edwards would be on draft day? Seeing as the Browns would have to assure getting Michael Crabtree first, I can't imagine David Patten being the #1 WR in Cleveland.

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I think we could hear about a trade right before or on the Saturday of the draft. That's probably a deadline that both teams are working with. But the Shockey thing got done after the draft if I recall correctly. Don't expect Jerry Reese to be in panic mode.

BJ (Lake Tahoe, NV): Who's your guess for the first opponent to the Cowboys in the new Jones-Mahal?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Early on, my gut was saying Commanders. The one thing to keep in mind is that the NFL hit the Commanders with all three of their East road games in the first half of the '08 season. They may try to even things out a little bit this season.

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Early on, my gut was saying Commanders. The one thing to keep in mind is that the NFL hit the Commanders with all three of their East road games in the first half of the '08 season. They may try to even things out a little bit this season.

Scott (Boston, MA): Why, oh why, are the Commanders expected to take Mark Sanchez in the first round? Shouldn't they be looking to grab the best linemen available, or more intelligently, trade down and get multiple linemen?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I think Mel Kiper Jr.'s the only who has that right now. I don't think the 'Skins will take Sanchez with that No. 13 pick. In fact, there's a good chance he's already off the board by then.

BJ (Lake Tahoe, NV): Hope you had a good Easter Holiday. Do you think the NFC East has lost some of it's so-called dominance this offseason and won't be sending 2 or 3 teams to the NFC playoffs this year?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: No, I don't think that at all, BJ. The Giants reloaded on defense and they're a receiver away from being dominant again. The Eagles have a ton of ammunition via draft picks -- and they just reached the NFC title game. The Cowboys should be better on defense and the Commanders made a huge push on the defensive side. I think three teams is a reasonable goal.

Chris (Philly): How much is the loss of Spags going to effect the Giants D this year? And how much do you think the addition of Spags is going to help the Rams?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: He's an excellent defensive coach -- and I think he'll eventually have success with the Rams. That said, Sheridan knows what he's doing. Coughlin has done a really nice job of keeping his staff together. And the guys he hired are all well-versed in his system. Sheridan may add a few wrinkles, but it won't look a lot different. I talk to Justin Tuck quite a bit, and he sounds completely comfortable with the new DC.

SprungOnSports (Long Island): What kind of big impact move do you think the Eagles are going to make with all those picks?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I think the Eagles would love to have Brandon Pettigrew. I could also see them doing whatever it took to land Michael Oher. I'm not as certain about them drafting a RB in the first round as Paul Domowitch is.

Robert (Latrobe, PA): Is this Jason Campbell's last chance to prove to Dan Snyder that he is the QB of the future?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Yep

Wayne (Ft Lauderdale): who has at the best offseason in the NFC east so far please rank them 1-4 this is mine giants, skins, boys, eagles agree?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: This is obvioulsy incomplete because of the draft. But at this point, I'd say:

1. Giants
2. Commanders
3. Cowboys
4. Eagles

Vince (Brooklyn, NY): What's taking the Giants so long to get a #1 receiver? Don't they have a ton of draft picks to trade?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Yes, but you don't want to trade a bunch of picks if you don't have to. Sometimes teams will get panicky around the draft. Or even after that. We need to see how ugly this thing gets in Arizona before we know whether Boldin's truly available. Jerry Reese is in no rush.

hank (texas): Is Plax. going to jail?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I don't see any scenario in which he avoids at least some jail time. Eight months would be my guess.

Bob (Fairport, NY): Assuming the Giants were to stay at 29 and not trade for a veteran receiver, if Nicks, Britt, and Robiskie are all sitting there who should the Giants take and who do you think they'll take?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Out of that bunch, they'd go with Nicks. But I'm not convinced they'd go WR in that scenario...Might go after someone like Eben Britton the OT.

Jessie C. ( West Chester Pa. ): Sup Matt! What are the chances that the Eagles pass on picking an OT with the 21st pick and draft Rashad Jennings instead? And why would they go with Jennings when someone like K.Moreno or S.Greene will probably still be there?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I think you could get Jennings in the second or third round. I wouldn't take him in the first.

Tyler (NY): Do you think Ahmad Bradshaw will be able to step up into Derek Wards role?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: You bet. I think he has the potential to be more explosive than Ward. And Danny Ware will also be a nice complement. An embarrassment of riches at that position.

Jordan (Slinger, WI): Is Greg Paulus a legit NFL QB in your opinion?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I have no clue. He was a great high school quarterback who will receive a look at the next level. But this is nothing more than a project. I remember everyone going nuts about Drew Henson when he decided to leave the Yankees. He was way more accomplished as a
QB than Paulus -- and his career hasn't exactly taken off.

Bob (Fairport, NY): What are the chances the Giants decide to go into the season without trading or signing a veteran receiver?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I'd say pretty good.

Doug (NY): Assuming the Giants take Britton and not a WR, does that mean they HAVE to go wideout at 45 (Britt, Robiskie)?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Reese never really thinks like that. One way or the other (trade) or draft, the Giants will have another player at receiver. And if someone like Robiskie or even Iglesias is sitting there at 45, they will think about them. But again, there won't be any panic involved.

Bob (Fairport, NY): Here's the only math i'm doing today, Beast Chat with Matt Mosley > Group meeting in 10 mins

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Stay with us, Bob.

True Mike, NJ: The Giants need a receiver, but so do the teams drafting ahead of them. the Giants also have an extra defensive tackle. How far up could they trade by packaging the No. 29 pick plus Jay Alford or Fred Robbins?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I don't think packaging Robbins and the No. 29 would get you that far at all. You'd have to give up something else (45) to make a serious move. No. 29, 45 and Robbins might get you to No. 15

Ben (Costa Mesa, CA): Matt - dont listen to any of the haters on your blog, you do great work. With most projecting the Eagles will take an RB and OL in thr 1st, but Andy saying he is satisfied with his O-Lineman, what will the birds most likely do with that pick? Take the best player available or trade it away?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I love the haters! But thanks for the kind words, Ben. I think the Eagles will take the best player on the board -- unless it's a quarterback. Wouldn't shock me to see them trade down a couple of spots with one of those picks. But if a quality OT is still sitting there, they might go ahead and strike. I think Andre Smith might be sitting there at 21, but I wouldn't take him.

Louis (SF): Matt, the Boys are mishandling Miles Austin. They have talked him up so much that he's going to have a ton of pressure on him. Plus if he succeeds, he'll demand a huge contract.

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Louis, you might be onto something. But the good thing is that we're talking about the most level-headed kid you could ever find. He's just laughing about this sudden interest in him. He's one of the hardest workers on the team -- and this surge in popularity won't change him. He'll either go out and tear it up or he won't meet expectations. But I don't think the hype will lead him astray.

Joseph (Sacramento, CA): Could you please give me an insider's view to what the Skins realistic draft board looks like at the moment? I know that Rey Maualuga is visiting with them today, but is he ranked higher on their board then say A.Smith, Orakapo, Maybin, Oher, etc.? Thanks and love the work.

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Thanks, Joseph. I think the Commanders will consider moving up a couple of picks if they can get Orakpo, They've tried to hide their passion for this kid, but haven't done a great job of it! Maybin would be the next choice. There are some character concerns on Maualuga. I know that stuff has come up quite a bit in their discussions.

Chuck (Wash DC): Matt, given how Dan Snyder thinks, why arent the Skins in the conversation to trade for Braylon? They clearly hate drafting players, and Edwards would give them another weapon for Campbell and potentiall open things up for Portis and Cooley as well.

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: They are committed to seeing what they have in last year's second-round picks Kelly and Thomas. The trade for Edwards won't happen.

Cole (Conroe, TX): The Cowboys are the only team that can make a third WR into a "star" without the player ever really producing. Is this why most everyone hates the Cowboys?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Jerry becoming a billionaire wasn't all luck. He's a pretty good salesman -- and he's been selling the heck out of Austin.

Sean (TR NJ): With such limited resources in this draft, do you see the Cowboys getting anyone special to salage a very pricey trade for their wide out?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I'm not sure what your definition of "special" is, but I think someone like Brian Robiskie at No. 51 could end up being pretty special. But remember that the Cowboys haven't gone after a first-day receiver since Antonio Bryant (am I missing anyone?) and that didn't work out so well. Guess it worked out OK for Tampa Bay, though. Having some wireless issues at the Beast home office. If I disappear for several minutes -- or forever -- that's what happened.

Tyler (Sacramento, CA): We all know Jerry is going to wheel and deal those 11 draft picks he has. Any chance of the boys moving into the first round? Or do you think they try and get another pick in the second?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: More likely that he moves down.

Saagar (San Jose, CA): Hey Matt, on the topic of Matt Sanchez and the Trojans, which of the current Trojans entering the draft do you think has the best potential as a pro?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I wavered on him at one point, but Cushing would be my pick to click.

Eden (Toronto, Canada): Matt, when are the Giants gonna do this WR trade? The wait is killing me!!!

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Eden, hang in there. The Giants are very patient in their offseason approach.

John (CT): You've always said that Tony Romo will one day provide big dividends for the Cowboys (go deep in the playoffs), is this the year?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I don't know if this is the year, but yes, I think Romo's one of the better QBs in the league. And he'll eventually win a playoff game. And he'll lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl. Just not sure it will happen with the team as currently constructed. The Roy Williams thing scares me.

Bob (Fairport, NY): Why are teams not going after Torry Holt? He's not a number 1 receiver anymore, but couldn't he at least help the Giants receivers especially Dominick Hixon?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: With guys like Holt and Harrison, teams want to wait and see where they stand after the draft. I think Holt could help someone in the right situation, but there's no rush.

Sam Boynton Beach,FL : I think theres more of a chance that the Giants move up to get a stud LB if someone drops then a WR because theres plenty to go for in the later rounds? what do you think?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I don't think they will move up

Matt (DC): "The Roy Williams thing scares me." go on...

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Other than the one year in Detroit (2006), Williams hasn't done anything to warrant No. 1 receiver status. He's still living off his college credentials. Without T.O., teams can focus on taking him out of the game, which will put a lot of pressure on the inexperienced Miles Austin. If no one has to respect the passing game, they could load up to stop a talented stable of running backs. I'm just not sold on Williams. That's all.

Doug (NY): But with so many draft picks, I thought the Giants essentially have to make some type of deal because they just cannot sign all of them (roster or cap restrictions maybe). Is this true?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: They don't have to do anything. Coughlin and Reese love creating competition. They believe some of those fourth and fifth rounders could push some of the players who've become too comfortable. Maybe someone will wake Gerris Wilkinson from his slumber. Is he still on the roster? I'm pretty sure he is.

Rob (MI): What about Austin did the Jets not find appealing? Is it just his inexperience? Do you think he could be a threat this year? Next year?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I don't think the Jets found anything that "wasn't appealing." They were just doing their due diligence. There are people in the league (Bill Parcells) who rave about Austin. In the end, the Jets probably decided it was too risky to give up a second-rounder in exchange for a guy who's still unproven. I think he's enormously talented, but we'll see if that translates to the field this season. At one point last season, some people thought Domenik Hixon was ready to be a No. 1. Sometimes we get a little ahead of ourselves with players. I've tried to temper your enthusiasm for Austin -- even though I love the kid.

Frank(PA): Whats the price of Bills Tackle Jason Peters, as well as the Eagles interest level?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Eagles are interested, but I'm hearing the Bills would want a No. 1 and a third. That's not going to happen.

Chris (DC): Matt - Love your work. If you were the Cowboys, would you rather have Austin or the 2nd rounder (hypothetically of course)?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Can I plead the fifth? I think the wisest thing to do is take the second-round pick, but I'd rather wait and see what's behind Curtain No. 2 -- or No. 19 in this case.

Carlos (Albuquerque, New Mexico): Matt, why is the Beast so awesome? Best thing going on at ESPN.com But seriously do you think if the G-Men don't use the excess of picks to move up, that it could end up being a waste of picks? I mean if the decide half of their draft isn't better than what they have on the roster and they cut said players they essentially get nothing for those picks.

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: If the Eagles end up keeping three of their 10 picks, it might look bad. But then if two of the three become valuable contributors on a Super Bowl team, I'd have a hard time calling it a wasted draft. Look back at some of the Bears and Cowboys drafts over the years. Tons of players were cut, but a few of them hit big. Of course I'm talking about the early 80s for the Bears and the early 90s for the Cowboys.

Darren (Dallas): I heard that Jason Peters has the Haynesworth syndrome; he only plays his best when it's contract time.

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I've heard the same thing.

adam orlando fl [via mobile]: how do you think desean jackson will do in his second year will there be a sophmore jinx

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I thought Jackson came a long way last season. He sort of hit a wall -- especially in that awful loss to the Commanders. But then he fought back and performed really well in the playoffs. I know Reid had to call him into his office late in the year, but the guy ended up producing. So no, I don't see a sophomore jinx. And thanks for asking the first question of the chat, Adam.

riles det [via mobile]: do u really think th lions should draft stafford wit th no 1 pk

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: I think they almost have to. If you think he's the best quarterback in the draft, you'd hate to see him go turn another franchise around. And Flacco and Ryan have shown that you can have immediate success with a rookie quarterback. But the safer picks are Smith or Curry.

djd(largo,md) [via mobile]: hello matt... what should the skins do in the draft... who should they draft or should they trade their 13 pick to get more

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: If they're sitting there at No. 13 and see a guy they like a lot in the 18-20 range, then by all means trade down and grab another pick. If Phillip Daniels doesn't get hurt in training camp last season, we're not having this conversation.

Samoyed(Frisco,TX): You keep mentioning Robiske as a possible target for the Cowboys. Is this because you have some sort of insider information that they are interested or is this something else? I just can't see them target a possession WR in this draft. They are loaded with possession type WR's. Isn't it more realitic to predict them (if they do draft a WR) to go after speed WR's?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Great to hear from my blog nemesis! :) I've consistently said, that the Cowboys have a real appreciation for Robiskie. They love his football pedidgree and his big-school past. If he's sitting there at No. 51, it will be tough to pass him up. And Miles Austin is there speed guy. We act like Robiskie's the slowest guy on earth -- and he's really not.

Josh (Montana): Hey Matt, I am a die hard bronco fan and im still hoping they come up with either a trade or maybe drafting a Qb with one of those two first rounders because i dont believe Orton or Simms are the answer? any hope?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: Believe it or not, McDaniels really loves Orton.

Mike (Philadelphia,PA): Matt, Every year the Eagles lose free agents and the media claims doom(Douglas, Staley, Trotter, etc.) But look back over the last 7 years or so and the only player that left that went on to become a better player was Burgess. Reid and Banner are some of the best at gaging when a player is done being a solid contributor, and get rid of the player at the right time, rather than a year or 2 too late. Thoughts?

sn2.gif
Matt Mosley: yes, I do think they do a nice job with known when to say when. With Dawkins, though, it wasn't so much about when they let him go. It was about the "how." They could've made it much easier on themselves by not coming across as quite so heartless. The Ravens also do a nice job of cutting ties with players at the right time. And speaking of time, I've been asked to end the chat. You guys were wonderful -- as always!!

This the hole thing about Roy Williams never producing like a true #1 WR, is puzzling to me. Who would produce like a true #1 WR when they have Joey Freaking Harrington throwing them the football and Charles Rogers and Mike Williams as the #2 WR?

Andre Johnson produced big even with Carr as his QB. So it can happen. But your are right, most elite WR seem to have pretty darn good QBs throwing to them.

I think the Roy Willy doubt though is stemming mostly from his awful Dallas season debut. Everyone has seen how "not good" he was last year, and even though he had some excuses for his poor play (injured foot, Brad Johnson, lack of timing with Romo, etc), it is up to him to prove himself next year. Unfortunately for him, it's a lonnnnggg time till he gets to prove himself since it's such a long offseason.

I don't think Robiske will make it to our pick but if he does I have no problem taking him. Easily the best route runner in the draft.

Robiskie works for me

Yes. They want Robiskie because they now realize they may have made a serious mistake with the Williams trade, I bellieve. Robiskie and Williams are both posession type receivers. If Williams can't hack it, they will have someone other than Hurd to use.

If he can't hack it they will get rid of him despite the cost, I expect, because he has already demonstrated his propensity to be a whiner and locker room cancer.

Like I've been saying, getting Robiskie at 51 would be great.

Robiskie reminds me of Michael Jenkins, another former Buckeye wide receiver. I think Robiske will be slightly better though.

Stick with safety or LB at 51. Take Brandon Tate with either #69 or first pick in 4th. I think this kid will make a better pro than Robiskie. Heck of a PR/KR to start with and I think has more potential than Robiskie.

Yeah I agree, Tate was explosive and will definitely help on punt and kickoff returns!

Tate was leading the nation in all purpose yards when he got hurt last year. He will be a much beter pro than college player.

I would love to have Robiskie, I think he is a good rout runner and while he does not have great speed he is quick in and out of his breaks and has good hands and knows how to use his size and strenght to get open
