Once the Cowboys selected Penn State linebacker Sean Lee in the second round of this year's draft, it became quite apparent that Bobby Carpenter's days in Dallas were numbered. And now it looks like the Cowboys and Rams will swap a couple of former first-round draft picks. Carpenter, the 18th overall pick in '06, will be sent to St. Louis in exchange for Alex Barron, the 19th overall selection in '05, according to ESPNDallas.com.

Barron

Carpenter and Barron are expected to take their physicals Sunday and the trade will likely be finalized Monday. I've been in touch with Carpenter via text message and he'll stop by the blog once the trade is announced. I've also asked several longtime scouts what they think of Barron. Here's what one AFC scout who asked not to be identified sent me Thursday:

"Has size and length, good reach, can slide feet, but lacks power," said the scout. "Average strength in run game. Not a very physical run blocker. Lacks some natural leverage but can use body to cover/shield [defenders]. Has good lateral slide in pass protection, but anchor can be a bit of an issue. More finesse than might. Ordinary as a starter, but has played in the league and will be an adequate backup and good spot starter."

Barron will immediately become the Cowboys' swing tackle and back up both Doug Free and Marc Colombo. This is honestly one of the fairest trades you could make. Carpenter will have a shot at starting in the Rams' 4-3 scheme and Barron should be a solid backup. And down the road, Barron might be able to replace Colombo.

When the trade's finalized, you'll be the first to know.

sounds like a good deal for both teams to be honest.

If we were trading for Barron as a starting tackle I'd say this is a horrible deal. However since we're trading for him as a backup swing tackle I think it's a great deal. You essentially traded your 3rd string ILB for a 2nd string swing tackle. Smart and shrewd moves by Jerry Jones this offseason, he's quickly evolving into one hell of a GM...... scary right?

What!? We're trading a starter for a backup?! I demand an additional draft pick from the rams!

So if we got a starter out of the deal it was horrible but if we got a backup it is swell?

Hopefully Barron will stick around and we can make him Colombo's replacement in a couple of years.

No you misunderstand. With Barron's skill level, if we were trading for him with the intention of making him a starter then I wouldn't be on board. However since he is coming here with the plan to be a backup then I have no problem. Essentially since we're keeping Free at LT instead of Barron I'm happy, b/c Free > Barron.

I wonder if the guys on the Rams forum are trying to throw Coakley into the trade?

No disrespect to Colombo, but if he doesn't get back to where he was, Barron may replace him much sooner than some think.

The water was just too dirty with Flo, the more you examine this move the better it seems to be.

This isn't what Vela (I think it was Vela) said.

I think so as well.

Dallas swaps backup for backup but gets help at an area where it is needed.

The Rams swap starter for starter but pull in a player who they aren't convinced is a nothing.

Look, the Rams are inept but not stupid.

They are not gonna give up somebody supremely capable for our Bobby Carp.

It does look to be a fair trade because both are almost adequate at what they do. Adequate but not good and certainly not great.
This is much ado about nothing. Just another body and that is the second time i have heard that Barron lacks power. So . . yawn.

Oh, so Barron is durable. So was bobby.

im happy with this trade, the knock on barron is strength, maybe he gets here with the hard workers, and the best strength training in the biz, jerazic(sp) should be able to put some strength in him, hopefully it will be enough, i like his reach, if he can end up with strong pop at his reach he could really be something useful.
