Why not? It's a $65M deal and $20M guaranteed. That breaks down to around $11M a year with $20M in guaranteed money. Thats a pretty damn good deal for a QB with around 11 starts under his belt.

What about the other 4 years?

An Agent is gonna want to get paid every single year big money. There going to want to get as much GM as possible every year, to lessen the chance of the player getting cut. it's not a good deal for the player at all.

You do understand the agent has to agree to this right?

And there isn't an agent thats gonna take that kind of deal.

People throw out all kinds of crazy stuff when we talk about deals. Gee, we should pay Romo the minimum plus $2000 per completion.

None of that is going to happen - Romo will get a big deal that will be like all the other big deals signed -- after 3 years you can cut the guy and have it as a wash on the cap -- before that you are going to take a big hit cutting him.

He'll likely approach 20 mill in guarantees. And get close to 10 mill a year. Folks gotta live with that -- next year starting QBs will get getting 30 mill in boni and 12 mill a year.

Romo has ALREADY done a lot more then Schaub ever has. So he will clearly make a lot more. Bulger's deal gives them a ceiling- no way that Romo deserves that much money. Say 6 years at 50 million. Say with a $15 mill bonus and lots of incentives.

incentives just won't happen. It will hurt the team more than it will help the player.

Dude, this is the NFL not the MLB. They don't guarantee entire contracts!

Odd. Thats what I said. $20M guaranteed and almost $11M a year over six years and I was told I was crazy in the post you responded to.

Dallas could setup incentives that if they are reached could allow Romo to renegotiate his contract. I think in the end there will be some clause that will allow for this.

and Agents aren't gonna take only 2 years out of 6 fr GM. That is not good for business

I'm not sure about those

but the incentives i was talking about was like 4,000 yards, 30TD's 2 Pro-bowls

stuff like that. That creates a distraction to the coaches, players, and the team.

Romo is a VERY confident guy. I could seem him going for some incentives like Pro Bowls, playoff wins, etc.

so if the defense falls through, and we keep losing playoff games, you think Romo is gonna be happy with the money he's getting?

It's a team game, you can't use team goals as an incentive for one player.

Wow. It has nothing to do with years, it has to do with guaranteed money. Once the moneies paid reaches the amount that was guaranteed you can cut your losses. Davis got around $18M in guaranteed money and that was considered huge. Bulgar took $26M and he is an established top QB.

It has everything to do with the years. Agents are not gona want to put 20M of GM in 2 years, While Romo gets paid now, he won't get paid later, again bad for the player. The Agent is going to want to maximize the deal, get as much as money as he can over the first 4 years of the contract, because we all know players rarely see the last two.

You have it backwards.

dargon, its not as absolute as you make it out to be. There are almost always some incentives- it really depends on what the player wants. I do not think that agents have as much influence as you insist they do. Maybe with some players- but I bet most have a LOT of input on what they want in a contract.

DK, actually it is all about guaranteed money. Contracts aren't guaranteed, so whatever they can get, and the sooner they can get it is what's most important.

The length of the contract only matters as it pertains to how many years they can stretch the signing bonus. Those back-end years doesn't mean a thing if there's no bonus money (roster, option, etc.) to it.

If an agent can get their client 20m in the first two years, then they've done their job. Cuz anything after that third is year is probably going to be renegotiated or make them a cap casualty.

You are confused. Nate Clements has an 8 year $80 million dollar contract. Of that $80M only $22M is guaranteed. Not 8 years of it! Just over 25% of the entire contract is guaranteed. Once Clements has been paid $22M the 49ers can cut him free and clear. If they cut him before they have paid the entire $22M, then they must give him the rest of it. If Romo got a $65M contract and you guaranteed $20M that is 30% of the contract guaranteed. What do you think is going to happen? They are going to sign Romo to a $70M 100% guaranteed contract? I don't think so.

Romo wants a Bulger deal and the team wants to offer a Schaub deal.

I doubt either side blinks until the season is started.

There is no real pressure on either side.

Romo is going no where and he is unlikely to risk injury to the point it would affect his market value.

I don't think Romo gets a deal until bye week. He needs to show us what he has for a half season.

Bingo...........
