IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys free safety Ken Hamlin appears to be ready to return after a four-week layoff due to a high ankle sprain.
Hamlin practiced Tuesday for the first time since injuring his right ankle in the Nov. 15 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Coach Wade Phillips said Hamlin is expected to play Saturday night against the New Orleans Saints.
Phillips said he believes Hamlin, who calls the defensive signals, will help the Cowboys make adjustments against the Saints' complicated offense. However, Phillips acknowledged that it could be difficult for a safety missing a month to return against the NFL's top-ranked offense.
"I don't think he'll make any mental mistakes back there," Phillips said. "Physically, how quickly he'll react to things and get back in the swing of it, I don't know for sure. I think he will, but he may be a little rusty."
Alan Ball has been an adequate replacement for Hamlin, whose lack of playmaking was a concern before his injury.

IRVING, Texas -- As usual, running back Marion Barber refused to answer questions from reporters.
"Don't even waste your time," Barber said repeatedly to a handful of reporters who tried to talk to him.
It's well known that Barber does not want to talk to the media. The Valley Ranch media horde usually respects his wishes, but there are times when questions need to be asked of the starting running back.
This is one of those times. Owner/general manager Jerry Jones questioned Barber's role last week. Then Barber was stuffed three straight plays from the 1-yard line, a key turning point in the Cowboys' loss to the San Diego Chargers. He's produced like an average back since being paid like an elite one.
NFL rules state that players must make themselves available to the media. Those that don't are subject to a $25,000 fine. When told he might be wasting his money, Barber didn't seem bothered.
"I'm blessed," he said as he walked out of the locker room.

IRVING, Texas -- As Jerry Jones noted Sunday night, the Dallas Cowboys do not have a holder problem.
Maybe Mat McBriar wasn't to blame for Nick Folk's field goal woes, but the punter won't be asked to resume holding duties. Franchise quarterback Tony Romo will continue in that role.
"He's a great holder," Folk said. "No complaints there."
