ESPN: Roy Williams Released

Roy Williams disappointed but says, "I would have done the same thing"

Former Cowboys receiver Roy Williams was still at his home in Odessa when he got the word from owner Jerry Jones that he was going to be released.

Williams said Jones told him the move was being made for salary cap reasons.

Though he was disappointed, the former Longhorn star reacted in true Williams fashion.

Known for being too open and honest, Williams said "It is a business. It is what it is. It's a business. I would have done the same thing."

Yes. If we get injuries than so be it. We need to count on young depth to step up at some point and spend our money elsewhere.

Ogletree has got the skills to make a play or 2 if someone were to go down if he'll just pull his head out.

Yes if the young depth has talent and the fact is these guys outside of Harris are UDFA and have shown nothing. I don't think we need to break the bank but there is not much talent behind Dez and Miles and while I have high hopes on Harris there is no way to know how he will produce at this level. In a league that likes to throw the ball having 2 legit WR is not going to cut it.

That does surprise me.

If the following are all gone (Columbo, Davis, Barber & Roy) that concerns me a bit because we don't have clear successors for two of those starters.

On the other hand, it seems to send a pretty clear message about the direction this team is headed. That part is exciting.
Roy getting cut really didn't surprise me at all it was a matter of time before it happened anyway.

He won't be unemployed for long though and it wouldn't surprise me again if the Commanders sign him if the Holmes deal falls through.

It's not shocking. They've got Dez who they've got to get on the field as much as possible and they needed the cap space.

I'm not shocked at all by Roy being let go. It's a shame though cause it appeared him and Tony were finally clicking last year before Tony went down with that injury.

Wow. I didn't see this one coming. I was hoping he'd get another year but oh well. Hopefully the Cowboys don't feel they have a player on the roster who can be a #3 and they go and get a veteran.
If thats the case then I have a feeling they might target James Jones, if he becomes available from the Packers.

He and assistant coach Robinson has a history together as we know here.

Good answer Roy. Good luck to you.

Not sure if they will go after a vet FA or not. I'm thinking they will go with what we have and pray someone steps up. I'm not entirely happy with that idea as that could make us VERY thin if Dez or Miles gets hurt.

Question:

So did Roy Williams ever get the chemistry thing down, or was he really just that terrible?

RW supporters have to be eating crow right now. I was done with this guy after the fumble on Thanksgiving Day. Realized then and there, he would never be who we wanted him to be...

atleast for the price we paid to get him.

I'm a RW supporter business is business. I agree he has never lived up to the contract. I don't feel like I'm eating crow because I supported a guy and things did not work out. That's life in the NFL

I completely disagree. Especially when you factor in our entire attack.

I don't like it. I think people forget how effective he was early last season while Romo was still on the field. I'd have liked to hold onto him one more year as the 3rd receiver. I like Harris, but I don't trust a mid round rookie as the 3 and one injury away from starting.

And, no, I don't trust Ogletree or Hurd either. Maybe we have an addition in mind.

Roy's been a pretty stand up guy since he's been here. It's not his fault our GM made that trade and signed him to that kind of deal.

I'd rather spend my money on an offensive lineman than a 3rd WR.

A good QB + a Good OL > All star receivers.

Right.

Which is why we all need to hold off on making definitive statements on these moves until we see it all.

I am and as good as Witten is he is not a WR nor is Bennett. We have 2 guys who have shown they can do the job at Wideout outside of that we have no one who has done anything. So disagree all you want but it does not change the fact we have 2 WR and a bunch of no bodies behind them.

We can hope that all UDFA turn into Miles Austin but I'm not banking on it.

Before anyone says it this is not about RW to me, Dallas did what they had to so but that does not mean they should not look to bring in a feasible WR who actually has some real playing experience.

I'd love to believe we're planning on using Felix and DeMarco in the slot this year and that was part of the reasoning behind this move.

I'm sure there will be times they will put them out there but when you have 2 starters then zip behind them then you are in big trouble should either of them miss time due to injury which is a pretty common event for WR. I think Dallas will be able to find a good WR with experiance and do so without having to pay out a ton to get them.

#3 WR's just arem't a big enough factor imo to warrant spending the money or even not trying to develop some youth.

Develop youth and spend some money elsewhere. #3 receiver isn't going to get enough production to warrant any kind of money.

Protect Romo and with all these other weapons we have than the #3 receiver will get an opportunities by default.
