Scouts Inc. Archive:
Keith Kidd: (12:30 PM ET ) Hey guys, it was a great first week for the winners--a lot of exciting games. The most impressive wins were the Colts, Patriots, Carolina, Pittsburgh, and you gotta throw Tennessee in there, man. Nobody expected that, even though it was a close win!
Mad Mike (Houston): Kidder: I think it was you who recapped the Texans/Chiefs game. More was said about how bad the Chiefs were, but the Texans played well. First series defense looked shaky and gave up about 60 of the overall yardage yielded then only about 150 yds. the rest of the game. Pretty solid and generated (4) TO's, we haven't done that well in the past. Offense will continue to get better and Ahman Green toted at over 4yds. per carry. We will win 8 games or more this season. Thanks, MM
Keith Kidd: (12:31 PM ET ) I was very impressed with Matt Schaub, Andre Johnson, and Ahman Green. this was a game that Houston had to win, against a lesser opponent. It gives them hope for this season. I thought they did a great job of shutting down KC's rushing offense and forcing them to try to beat them through the air.
Owen (Roswell, GA): Why have teams like ATL Falcons and KC Cheifs that are DIRE need of a Quarterback that can throw have not contacted or attempt to sign Ex - Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich?
Keith Kidd: (12:32 PM ET ) It's incredibly difficult. Great point about Leftwich. Teams are reluctant to sign him because of all the learning of a new system, which would inhibit him. Money is also an issue. I bet Jack Del Rio wishes he had him back in Jacksonville yesterday, haha.
Detroit, MI: Do you think the Lions looked explosive or a team who played well enough to win against a lesser opponent?
Keith Kidd: (12:34 PM ET ) Anytime the Lions win, you have to be excited, especially to start the season. They'll be explosive offensively, but there are questions on the defensive side. This team is not used to winning. There'll be some nail-biters.
Jeff(san diego): Pats and Chargers...what do you see?
Keith Kidd: (12:35 PM ET ) The Pats were in midseason form. They did whatever they wanted to do yesterday offensively and the Jets had no answers. Even though the Chargers didn't win by a wide margin, when you hold last year's defending Super Bowl runner-ups to 3 points, that's pretty impressive.
Keith Kidd: (12:35 PM ET ) Also, what a great matchup in Week 2 against these two teams.
AD (NYC): KK, if Tarvaris Jackson can play like he did (not spectacular, but not making too many mistakes) what do you expect from the Vikings? Is 8 wins a crazy thought?
Keith Kidd: (12:37 PM ET ) I agree... Brad Childress will gameplan each week to take pressure off Tavaris Jackson. With that defense, that's a great strategy to have. There's going to be a point in time where they won't be able to run the ball and Jackson will have to make plays with his arm. The jury's still out on that, even though they beat a bad Falcons team yesterday.
Frank,: Chesapeake Virginia: Will Mike Tomlin be able to lead the Steelers to the playoffs this year?
Keith Kidd: (12:39 PM ET ) I was very impressed with the way the Steelers dominated the Browns yesterday, and I do think that Big Ben is going to have a great year in that system. Even though their division is one of the toughest in the NFL, this team will be right in the mix late in the year if the injury bug doesn't catch up to them in critical areas. The Browns were so bad, though, I don't know how great the Steelers are.
Joe (Indianapolis): Keith - The Colts D looked better than expected. The DBs and LBs were so much faster than in the past. Can they keep it up all season?
Keith Kidd: (12:40 PM ET ) Based on the simplicity of the Tampa 2 system in Indy, which allows guys to not have to do a lot of thinking, but just see and react, I think it can hold up based on what I saw Thursday night, but there will be growing pains because of the youth on the defensive side. I was blown away by how impressive they looked against a very good Saints offense.
Jason, Charlotte: Why is it that Jason Campbell is very accurate on deep balls, but struggles some on intermediate routes? Do you see their running game really carrying them this year?
Keith Kidd: (12:41 PM ET ) I think their running game will have to carry them, with both Portis and Betts, but I wouldn't buy a lot into his inaccuracies right now. The starters don't play much inthe preseason, so it takes about a month to get the guys in rythym, at least for some offenses. Unless of course you're Brady and Peyton Manning.
Jeff (Iowa): Keith, could Bob Sanders very well be the most valuable defensive player in the NFL?
Keith Kidd: (12:42 PM ET ) Absolutely, if he stays healthy and can maintain his productivity over a sixteen game season. I absolutely love the way they use him in this system, and along with his playmaking style. Pound-for-pound, probably the toughest player in the NFL. It's amazing how a lot of teams had him off their draft boards due to concerns about a medical condition he had in college.
Vince Young (Tennessee): Keith, Wow.. Did you see us yesterday.. Amazing.. I can't even take credit for our performance, my teammates really joined together and one this themselves... In your opinion, What do we need to have a winning season? Super Bowl or Bust Baby!
Keith Kidd: (12:43 PM ET ) Congrats, buddy, but I still don't see a Super Bowl in the makings for this season. One of the most impressive things this season for me was the ability of the Titans offense to stick it down the throat of a supposedly solid front seven. I think Mr. Del Rio's seat is getting hotter and hotter.
Joe (Detroit): Delhomme had higher passer rating in week 1 than did Peyton. Can the critics now stop ?
Keith Kidd: (12:45 PM ET ) Congratulations to him, but passer rating means nothing! I was impressed with him yesterday, and in order for the critics to get off him, he has to go out and play consistently. The hiring of Jeff Davison as offensive coordinator was one of the best moves this team made. That was an impressive win for them to go on the road and hold the Rams to 13 points.
Richard (Denver Colorado): What did you think of the Broncos and Jay Cutler?
Keith Kidd: (12:46 PM ET ) I though the Broncos, outside of the mistakes they made yesterday, should have won that game by 14 points. I was impressed by Cutler's decision-making and the fact that the team chose to put the game on his shoulders. He responded by winning in a tough environment, which will pay dividends for his development and confidence as we continue.
Zac (MN): Hey Keith, how about the NFC North! Who would have thought that the Bears would be the only team that lost yesterday? Outside of the Bears, who do you see having the best season?
Keith Kidd: (12:47 PM ET ) I like Green Bay based on the fact that I think their defense will be able to carry them throughout the season.
Alex (Milford, MA): Can we please hold off in crowning the Pats champs please. 1. It was a game that most people thought they would win and 2. I recall they beat the Jets at home last year only to lose to the in Foxboro later in the year. It's only week one, let's all take a deep breath.
Keith Kidd: (12:48 PM ET ) You're probably the only person in Massachusetts who feels that way today!
logan cedar hills utah: how good are the ravens
Keith Kidd: (12:49 PM ET ) Defensively, awesome. Offensively, I think much-improved from a year ago. It will be interesting tonight on how well they play against a very suspect Bengals front seven.
Derrick (Pa): Keith do u believe in Tony Romo after last night game, is he the quaterback that Dallas been waiting since Aikman retire.
Keith Kidd: (12:50 PM ET ) I was very impressed with him last night, and I think Jason Garrett will do wonders for him. I do want to see it over the whole course of a season. I still have somewhat of a jury out on him, but it was a great start for the '07 season.
Jeff (Seattle): KK, good morning from the Pacific Northwest. How bout the Seahawks? The defense was sure hitting hard yesterday. Just first day excitement or should we expect that out of them for the rest of the season?
Keith Kidd: (12:51 PM ET ) Again, I wouldn't buy too much into it from an offensive standpoint. That system relies so much on rythym and precise timing in the passing game. The preseason hurt, because the starters didn't play a lot. this team is starting to age, so this is the year it needs to make that strong push. But I loved their defense, even against a bad Tampa offense.
Rup (Fairfax, VA): Keith, do you think the Commanders Defense will be a power house this year?
Keith Kidd: (12:53 PM ET ) I do from a secondary standpoint. I do have concerns about their ability to create pressure on a four-man front, which will limit them on a back end. This Miami offense is not very good, so let's see them on Monday night and how they play against the Eagles.
Bryan (NY): I know they didn't win yesterday, but do you have an update on the status of Kevin Everett?
Keith Kidd: (12:54 PM ET ) According to reports, this guy had emergency surgery last night, so other than that, I would anticipate him not playing this season. I don't have any new reports other than what's posted on ESPN.com. Hopefully he responds well and can get back to playing in the near future. We're thinking about him.
Mike (Columbia, MO): The Titans had twice as many running plays as passing plays in their 13-10 win in Jacksonville. Could this be part of Fisher's strategy this season?
Keith Kidd: (12:56 PM ET ) If it works, don't fix it! That's a pretty good assessment this season, and with a strong running game in running back Chris Brown, just think how much more explosive this team will be in those third and long situations when VY can put it down the field. That said, again, there will come a time when they will have to throw the football, and I'm not impressed with their receiving corps.
Tommy (Sacramento): Keith, Is the Charger defense that good or was the Bears Offense that bad?
Keith Kidd: (12:57 PM ET ) The Chargers' defense is that good and hopefully Norv Turner doesn't do something that costs this team a big game down the road, much like Schottenheimer. This team is extremely talented on both sides of the ball.
Ed (Fond du Lac, WI): Kidder, I was pleasantly surprised by the Packers yesterday. Granted, the Eagles gave us some gifts with the muffed punts, but blame that on Andy Reid for not getting a punt returner in the off season. To me, it seems the O-Line can only go up after their performance yesterday - pass protection and run blocking were terrible. Do you think, with our improved D and kicker-weapon Mason Crosby, that this team could go 9-7, 10-6 if the O-line play improves?
Keith Kidd: (12:58 PM ET ) I was too, because that was a great win against a tough team in the Eagles. to me, the only thing holding this team back are the skill positions on offense. I think they are very good defensively and are sound in the kicking game. that final one-third is still questionable from an offensive standpoint.
Keith Kidd: (12:59 PM ET ) Hey guys, it's been great talking to you again. Look forward talking to you again during my national show at 12:00 on Thursday. Here's Matt Williamson!
Matt Williamson: (1:00 PM ET ) What's up folks? Let's roll!
Alan (atlanta Ga): hey matt! How well do you think the Panthers will do with their new offensive scheme?
Matt Williamson: (1:01 PM ET ) Well. It looks like a bit of a work in progress, but they have two good RBs who fit their zone blocking scheme well. I like their running game and despite yesterday, I still worry about Delhomme and especially their lack of pass catchers outside of S Smith.
JADUAN (CHICAGO): I KNOW THIS IS A HARD QUESTION. WHO IS THE BEST WIDE RECIEVER IN EACH CONFERENCE? AND WHICH IN THE LEAGUE?
Matt Williamson: (1:03 PM ET ) Wow-Let's see. AFCN-Ocho Cinco, AFCS-Marvin, AFCW-JWalk, AFCE-Evans, NFCN-Roy W, NFCS-S Smith, NFCW-Holt (Fitz is close), NFCE-TO...best overall? If fully healthy, I will take Holt, but I do worry that he is beginning to decline just a bit.
Jon (DC): Skins ran for 190 yards against a tough and physical Dolphins defense. This team is going to surprise.
Matt Williamson: (1:04 PM ET ) I don't doubt that. Check out the blog I wrote about Wash last week. I like them-IF HEALTHY. Their depth is bad-real bad. The Jansen injury would worry me. Still, they are improved.
Kevin, HOME OF THE RED SOX, Boston: Thoughts on Randel-El? Will he or Santana Moss be top dog by season's end?
Matt Williamson: (1:05 PM ET ) Moss. Great game for El though. Still, Moss is far more dangerous.
Randy Moss (Foxborough): Who this Evans? Can he beat a triple team?
Matt Williamson: (1:06 PM ET ) I hear ya Randy and yes, I considered you. Do it a few more weeks and I will be a believer. Evans is a stud. Still, Champ ate his lunch yesterday.
abram alex (las vegas ): did you like the aggresiveness of the broncos D wil they get better in the bates scheme
Matt Williamson: (1:06 PM ET ) I do think Den's D will get better and better throughout the year. The DL needs a little time to mesh and grow up together. Still, having Champ and Bly goes a LONG way. Bates will help a lot.
Jeremy (Bellevue): Matt, what did you think of S Smith yesterday? He looks like he is back and always ready to break free from the coverage. I guees that is what happens when you fire the little man up talking smack to him.
Matt Williamson: (1:07 PM ET ) What isn't to love about Smith? Awesome player. In his prime. On top of his game. Could easilty be the #1 WR in the NFL.
Nate (Madison): Where would you rank the Packers young and improved D among NFL teams?
Matt Williamson: (1:07 PM ET ) Top 10 for sure. I wrote a blog about that too. Check it out. That division has some strong D's!
Fernando (LA): Was Indy's domminance a result of an improved Defense, or the Saints Offense taking a step back?
Matt Williamson: (1:09 PM ET ) I guess I am crazy, but I still am not convinced about the Colts' D. I thought NO abandonded McAllister way too early and got far too cute. Still a very impressive showing of course, but I am not sold. I do think NO's O will come back to earth just a bit. Very young WRs. They still blow out TBay this upcoming week though.
Lee Evans (Buffalo): Hey Randy, I recall seeing Champ Bailey abuse you plenty while you were in Oakland.
Matt Williamson: (1:09 PM ET ) No question. Champ abuses everyone. Evans is a superstar in the making.
B (Minneapolis): What the hell is wrong with Detroit. We are trying to remake the Black N Blue division here, stop with the offense!
Matt Williamson: (1:10 PM ET ) Well, a lot is wrong with Detroit! Should they have passed on Calvin J?
Joseph (CT): Even though they won yesterday, can we still talk about how bad the Lions are??
Matt Williamson: (1:11 PM ET ) They get a pass this week. That Oakland team isn't a creampuff anymore and they went on the road and won handily. Give the Lions some love this week!
B (Minneapolis): "Evans is a superstar in the making..." So therefore you have to give Moss the nod for now don't you??
Matt Williamson: (1:12 PM ET ) Did you watch Moss the last two years? Awful. He ranks as "Former Superstar who might get back to that level"
Travis, SLC: Is this is beginning of Brandon Marshall becoming an elite receiver? Also do you think Denver can contend with the big three in the AFC?
Matt Williamson: (1:12 PM ET ) I think Denver will win the AFC West. Marshall is a big reason why. He is far from an elite WR, but he is/will be a very good #2. J Walk makes his life much easier.
Joe (Huntsville,AL): Who do you like tonight?
Matt Williamson: (1:14 PM ET ) I wrote up the Balt/Cincy game and went back and forth and back and forth about who to pick as the winner. In the end, I took the Ravens in a nail biter. BUT, if JO doesn't go tonight, I want Cincy. I expect an outstanding football game. Also, I just wrote a blog about the Bengals' Pass O vs. the Ravens' Pass D-should be up real soon.
Ryan (DET): Will Calvin Johnson end up being a greater threat than Roy Williams in the Detroit offense
Matt Williamson: (1:15 PM ET ) Not this year. I love Roy W (picked him as best in the NFCN), but I do believe that Calvin J will be the #1 WR in the NFL within three years. That is no knock on Roy, who is also quite awesome. Rediculously talented pair.
JD (Springfield MA): Are 2 Monday night games a possibility on a weekly basis down the line?
Matt Williamson: (1:16 PM ET ) I have no idea. Part of me loves it. Part of me is going to be dreading staying up to 1:30 in the morning and then having my one year old son wake up screaming at 6AM.
Jeremy (Bellevue): Matt FF value question I have Palmer and V Davis going tonight and I am up by 4, he has Gore against AZ. 6 pt tds around. Think I got it in the bag?
Matt Williamson: (1:16 PM ET ) Gore is going to have a huge game and a HUGE season. Still, I like your chances.
JP (NYC): What were your impressions of Eli?
Matt Williamson: (1:16 PM ET ) Better than expected. Oh wait, sorry, NYG lost. I cannot discuss them. :
KD (Portsmouth, VA): What's your take on Pittsburgh's run blocking? It seemed a bit inconsistent to me.
Matt Williamson: (1:17 PM ET ) Very inconsistent and their OL is a bit worrisome in general. Parker will break his long runs, but they need to show that they can get a few yards when they really need it.
Chris (CT): Matt, I thought Portis was the better back yesterday, will he start to take over a bit more or are they set on essentially splitting the carries?
Matt Williamson: (1:18 PM ET ) Tough call. Betts looked really strong to me as well. Improved OL. I would stick with what they did.
Lee (St. Paul): How can Favre stay healthy with Brandon Jackson missing half of his pass blocking assignments?
Matt Williamson: (1:19 PM ET ) Yeah-wow. That is a big concern. He is going to take some huge hits this year. Morency might be very welcomed back.
Sean (Philly): Matt, what about the other game that is on tonight, two "sleeper" teams on the rise going head to head in a divisional matchup.
Matt Williamson: (1:20 PM ET ) Yeah, excited to see these two as well. Some big time players on the field. Give me San Fran, but I don't feel especially strong about that. I do think both teams are a year away though. Could be a lot of points scored.
James (Wichita): What are your Thougts on A. Peterson yesterday, can we expect more of the same?
Matt Williamson: (1:21 PM ET ) He's a bad man. Yes, Taylor's role will continue to decrease-even if he is healthy. If AP stays healthy, he could have a monster year.
Patrick (Seattle): WHYA RE YOU BAD MOUTHING THE SEAHAWKS ALL THE TIME? You made some positive points but all I hear is their starting to age, their window is closing. Last time I checked EVERYONE is starting to age. Peyton is aging, Brett Favre is aging, Cant you ever say anything decent about a team who was decimated by injuries and nearly made it to the big dance?
Matt Williamson: (1:22 PM ET ) Didn't know that I did badmouth the Hawks. They have a great chance to win that division. I picked them as a playoff team. They were crushed by injuries last year. Good team. Not a great team.
chris (nj): Many people have said that the Bears do not have any explosive players; do you think that Berrian could/will become such a player? If not, who do you see emerging in the Bears Offense?
Matt Williamson: (1:23 PM ET ) Berrien is an explosive deep threat. Hester will provide some of that as well. Bradley barely plays, but he has that type of ability. Olsen will really stretch the field for a TE. Chi's O will be fine.
Dan (DC): Dallas defense is terrible. They won't win that division.
Matt Williamson: (1:23 PM ET ) Snyder? Agreed. I like Philly in the East. That doesn't look great after their game, but just wait. As for Big D, their D will improve a good bit if they get T Newman back.
Nick (PA): Adrian Peterson, Rookie of the year?
Matt Williamson: (1:24 PM ET ) Okay-I am on board.
SG (Washington): Did the Vikings win teach us anything or are the Falcons just that bad?
Matt Williamson: (1:25 PM ET ) Personally, I think ATL is just awful. Minny looked good and their D is going to eliminate running games, but the Vikes are really going to struggle throwing the ball. Peterson will help of course, but you gotta throw the rock with some success.
Justin ((Kansas)): If the Pack has a top ten d, where do the vikings stand, they were extremely impressive?
Matt Williamson: (1:26 PM ET ) They were amazing against a terrible team. I like GBay's D better than Minny's. Not by a lot, but I do think GBay's is more well rounded with better pass rushers.
Ben (SF): Does it ever bother you when people take objective analysis as a personal attack?
Matt Williamson: (1:26 PM ET ) Nah-that is just people being passionate about their teams. Without that passion, football wouldn't be football. If this were a chat about soccer, do you think we would get the same feedback? Gotta love it.
Jack ( Detroit ) : Minnesota or Detroit next week ??
Matt Williamson: (1:27 PM ET ) At Detroit right? Give me the Lions. Tough call though. Is Tatum Bell for real? We shall see next week. He is growing on me a bit though.
Jon (DC): Rocky McIntosh had 9 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble (not on the sack play), Defensive Player of the Week?
Matt Williamson: (1:28 PM ET ) Not sure on that-would have to see some other lines. Rocky could have an excellent season. It made NO sense to me when Wash was talking to Chi about Briggs.
Tom Brady (Patriot Nation): Still no questions on the Patriots? We're alwasys disrespected!
Matt Williamson: (1:28 PM ET ) Got one from Randy Moss earlier. The Pats are going to win it all. I said it a week after free agency started and still believe it.
al (DC): pats or SD next week?
Matt Williamson: (1:29 PM ET ) I don't know. I really just don't know. Haven't thought about that one enough yet. Get back to me later in the week. I do have to say though-I RARELY pick against New Eng.
Matt Williamson: (1:30 PM ET ) Alrighty folks, I am out. Busy day here. It was fun as always. Catch me tomorrow at 1:00 for an hour long chat. We can do some fantasy then as well if you want.
Doug Kretz: (1:31 PM ET ) Thanks Matt.. Lets continue the chat surrounding the winning teams.. Great weekend of football, wasn't it..
Ed (TX): I think romo can be a good qb in the league but i'm still not sold on him being in the elite class....what do you think?
Doug Kretz: (1:33 PM ET ) Ed.. I agree, Romo is a good quarterback but not a great one. He is a gutsy kid that has a sense about himself and is enough of an athlete to be a threat as a scrambler. The one thing that is keeping him from being an elite athlete is the ball he throws.. Watch the great ones. The ball stays on a line and rarely dives into the turf before it gets to the target. Romo almost throws too overhand, at times and the ball seems to be aiming downhill during it's flight.. This causes the ball to end up being short of it's target now and then..
Patrick (Seattle): I see so the feeling aroudn the league is their a good team not a great team. What do they need to be a great team? Secondary? TE upgrade? Your thoughts? What is keeping them from being a great team? Im just wondering what your criteria was for that.
Doug Kretz: (1:34 PM ET ) Until Seattle proves itself as a top pass defense, it will be considered a good team, not an elite team. Teams like New England can dominate their opponent offensively, one week and defensively, the next.. They just don't have many ups and downs..
James (Minnesota): The Vikings have a dominant defense (both pass, pass rush, and run) and Tarvaris Jackon is improving by the days, so I don't think the Bears are the NFC North winners this year.
Doug Kretz: (1:35 PM ET ) James.. Sorry to tell you this, but one game does not make a season.. By midway thru the season Chicago should be on top and looking down on everyone else..
TJ(NY): Doug...look at the Steelers early schedule & tell me they are not 5-0 or 4-1 going into their Bye.
Doug Kretz: (1:37 PM ET ) TJ.. I like their schedule, also.. I see them being 4-1 with a loss to either Seattle OR Ariz (away game).. But not to both..
Kansas City Warrior: In the NY/DAL game, on TO's second touchdown, TO was hit late for a penalty. I was curious why a guy who got burned would go after a player in the endzone. Well thanks to TIVO i witnessed what got the defender so peeved. Starting at the 15yd line TO stuck out his middle finger and kept it low to his side, going into the endzone. Even if the producer of SNF saw this he couldn't show a replay of it(thanx FCC) Do you think the league saw this too, and if so what do you think Goodell will do?
Doug Kretz: (1:39 PM ET ) Warriorr.. This incident (with TO's actions) is being posted all over the internet.. Goodell won't be able to ignore it and will probably end up fining TO..
Markail (Detroit, MI): Is it just me or are people not realizing that it's the first week of the season. Settle down people! I bet 90% of people are dropping 1/2 their fantasy team right now based off of one game.
Doug Kretz: (1:40 PM ET ) Markail.. You are 100% correct.. The results of the first week of the season consistently don't match up with what goes on for the rest of the season.. It's a long ways to go !!
Anthony Henry (Dallas): Hey I thought they brought me in to cover the "big" WR's. Why was I on the other side of the field all night while the abused the smaller Dallas DB's?
Doug Kretz: (1:42 PM ET ) Anthony.. Wade Phillips's defense is not condusive to having corners flip flop sides of the field to cover "big men".. If a corner is always matched up according to personnel it makes it easier for offenses to scheme their passing game.. They will know WHO you are covering and HOW to make it difficult for you to stay with them..
PaulieP (Scottsdale): Eric Kasilias was reporting that 50% of playoff teams win in week 1, and 83% of superbowl winners win in week one. So it does kind of match up.
Doug Kretz: (1:43 PM ET ) Paulie.. Playoff teams and Superbown winners are better teams than their opponents.. So, sure they SHOULD win.. What does not match up is the production of individuals which is important to fantasy league players..
John (det): IS the Lions front 4 for real? They had 3 sacks and 4 FF and int. Are they finally going to produce?
Doug Kretz: (1:45 PM ET ) John.. Remember, the Lions faced a Raider team that gave up, by far, the most sacks in the NFL last year.. They are improved but not by that much..
Nik (Wisconsin): After Brandon Jackson's performance (or lack thereof), do the Pack turn to Morency to carry the workload?
Doug Kretz: (1:48 PM ET ) Nik.. when Morency becomes healthy he will be the primary ball carrier.. Remember, the Eagles ARE a good defense and GB lost a pretty good ball carrier to free agency.. Morency will improve the run game, but I don't think by that much..
Sean (Raleigh, NC): Were the Panthers that good, or the Rams that bad?
Doug Kretz: (1:49 PM ET ) Sean.. It was a combination.. Loosing Pace definately hurt the Rams - they now need to work on shorter routes and three and one step drops so the QB can get rid of the ball quicker.. Plus the Panthers defense has always been good (when healthy, unlike last year)..
Jeremy (Bellevue): Doug the Hawks O is predicated on short passes to its Wr's thus opening up lanes for Aelxander to move the rock. The WRs were bad for the Hawks yesteday, what happened? It seems luck that their D stepped up and they got the W.
Doug Kretz: (1:51 PM ET ) Jeremy.. The offense takes longer to get rolling.. I still believe they will be a potent offense as the season wears on.. the good news for Seattle was that the defense did step up and played like they hoped they would..
Clint (CA): What do you think about the Broncos offense considering they gained 470 yards but only produced 15 pionts?
Doug Kretz: (1:52 PM ET ) Clint.. I'm not worried about the Denver offense.. The points will come.. Especially with a guy like Travis Henry toting the rock.. He has a nose for the end zone..
Carlos (Orlando, FL): My texans won a season opener for the first time in 4 years... how do you like mario williams now?
Doug Kretz: (1:54 PM ET ) Carlos.. Last year, when I was covering the AFC South, primarily, I repeatedly told Houston fans not to worry.. Williams will be just fine.. It almost always takes a DE at least one (often two) years to learn the craft.. He is progressing like I thought he would..
Teddy (Houston): Texans at Carolina next week, who comes out 2-0???
Doug Kretz: (1:55 PM ET ) Teddy... Carolina is VERY hard to beat when they are at home.. HOU 1-1, CAR 2-0
Danny (Fairfax, VA): PaulieP says 50% of playoff teams win in week 1...don't 50% of ALL teams win in week 1?
Doug Kretz: (1:56 PM ET ) Danny.. I believe that is right (unless there is a tie, lol)..
Carebear (Fargo, ND): Is it too early for me to get a Tavaris Nation tatto on my lower back?
Doug Kretz: (1:57 PM ET ) Way too early.. (unless you have just ONE open spot left on your lower back)..
Jake ( Charlotte ): Hard to beat??? Is that why we were 4-4 at home last year and had previously lost the home opener 3 years in a row?? I agree with your assessment by the way, just wantedto let you know that John Fox's team play better on the road
Doug Kretz: (1:58 PM ET ) Jake.. Last year was an abboration... And I don't believe in teams not being able to win home openers or being better on the road.. I am more concerned about which team has better personnel and coaches at crucial positions..
Daniel (Athens, Ga): Of all the winners, the Cowboys seemed like the big losers yesterday with losing Ferguson. How much is not having a solid NT going to hurt Wade's defense?
Doug Kretz: (2:00 PM ET ) Daniel it will hurt, but I'd be more concerned if he lost either one of his defensive ends, or Ware..
Mad Mike (Houston): Any predictions on Houston at Carolina this week? Can Super Mario produce big two games in a row??
Doug Kretz: (2:02 PM ET ) Other than Carolina winning.. I DO think Mario has started to turn the corner and should have a lot more productive games than bad ones.. I think he will do fine..
Chad (LA): Vernon Davis or Todd Heap? Who has the better game tonight?
Doug Kretz: (2:03 PM ET ) Davis should get more production against Arizona's defense than Heap will against Cincy..
Thomas (Charlotte): Prediction for next week? can the titans and jeff fisher do enough to push around the colts and sneak out a win at home? they have played them very tough the last 2 times. They will beat the colts one of the two times this season guaranteed.
Doug Kretz: (2:04 PM ET ) As much as I love the way Fisher coaches those guys.. I think Indy just has too much for the Titans to overcome.. Indy should win a close one..

Thanks, MM
Owen (Roswell, GA): Why have teams like ATL Falcons and KC Cheifs that are DIRE need of a Quarterback that can throw have not contacted or attempt to sign Ex - Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich?
Detroit, MI: Do you think the Lions looked explosive or a team who played well enough to win against a lesser opponent?
Jeff(san diego): Pats and Chargers...what do you see?
AD (NYC): KK, if Tarvaris Jackson can play like he did (not spectacular, but not making too many mistakes) what do you expect from the Vikings? Is 8 wins a crazy thought?
Frank,: Chesapeake Virginia: Will Mike Tomlin be able to lead the Steelers to the playoffs this year?
Joe (Indianapolis): Keith - The Colts D looked better than expected. The DBs and LBs were so much faster than in the past. Can they keep it up all season?
Jason, Charlotte: Why is it that Jason Campbell is very accurate on deep balls, but struggles some on intermediate routes? Do you see their running game really carrying them this year?
Jeff (Iowa): Keith, could Bob Sanders very well be the most valuable defensive player in the NFL?
Vince Young (Tennessee): Keith, Wow.. Did you see us yesterday.. Amazing.. I can't even take credit for our performance, my teammates really joined together and one this themselves... In your opinion, What do we need to have a winning season? Super Bowl or Bust Baby!
Joe (Detroit): Delhomme had higher passer rating in week 1 than did Peyton. Can the critics now stop ?
Richard (Denver Colorado): What did you think of the Broncos and Jay Cutler?
Zac (MN): Hey Keith, how about the NFC North! Who would have thought that the Bears would be the only team that lost yesterday? Outside of the Bears, who do you see having the best season?
Alex (Milford, MA): Can we please hold off in crowning the Pats champs please. 1. It was a game that most people thought they would win and 2. I recall they beat the Jets at home last year only to lose to the in Foxboro later in the year. It's only week one, let's all take a deep breath.
logan cedar hills utah: how good are the ravens
Derrick (Pa): Keith do u believe in Tony Romo after last night game, is he the quaterback that Dallas been waiting since Aikman retire.
Jeff (Seattle): KK, good morning from the Pacific Northwest. How bout the Seahawks? The defense was sure hitting hard yesterday. Just first day excitement or should we expect that out of them for the rest of the season?
Rup (Fairfax, VA): Keith, do you think the Commanders Defense will be a power house this year?
Bryan (NY): I know they didn't win yesterday, but do you have an update on the status of Kevin Everett?
Mike (Columbia, MO): The Titans had twice as many running plays as passing plays in their 13-10 win in Jacksonville. Could this be part of Fisher's strategy this season?
Tommy (Sacramento): Keith, Is the Charger defense that good or was the Bears Offense that bad?
Ed (Fond du Lac, WI): Kidder, I was pleasantly surprised by the Packers yesterday. Granted, the Eagles gave us some gifts with the muffed punts, but blame that on Andy Reid for not getting a punt returner in the off season. To me, it seems the O-Line can only go up after their performance yesterday - pass protection and run blocking were terrible. Do you think, with our improved D and kicker-weapon Mason Crosby, that this team could go 9-7, 10-6 if the O-line play improves?
Alan (atlanta Ga): hey matt! How well do you think the Panthers will do with their new offensive scheme?
JADUAN (CHICAGO): I KNOW THIS IS A HARD QUESTION. WHO IS THE BEST WIDE RECIEVER IN EACH CONFERENCE? AND WHICH IN THE LEAGUE?
Jon (DC): Skins ran for 190 yards against a tough and physical Dolphins defense. This team is going to surprise.
Kevin, HOME OF THE RED SOX, Boston: Thoughts on Randel-El? Will he or Santana Moss be top dog by season's end?
Randy Moss (Foxborough): Who this Evans? Can he beat a triple team?
abram alex (las vegas ): did you like the aggresiveness of the broncos D wil they get better in the bates scheme
Jeremy (Bellevue): Matt, what did you think of S Smith yesterday? He looks like he is back and always ready to break free from the coverage. I guees that is what happens when you fire the little man up talking smack to him.
Nate (Madison): Where would you rank the Packers young and improved D among NFL teams?
Fernando (LA): Was Indy's domminance a result of an improved Defense, or the Saints Offense taking a step back?
Lee Evans (Buffalo): Hey Randy, I recall seeing Champ Bailey abuse you plenty while you were in Oakland.
B (Minneapolis): What the hell is wrong with Detroit. We are trying to remake the Black N Blue division here, stop with the offense!
Joseph (CT): Even though they won yesterday, can we still talk about how bad the Lions are??
B (Minneapolis): "Evans is a superstar in the making..." So therefore you have to give Moss the nod for now don't you??
Travis, SLC: Is this is beginning of Brandon Marshall becoming an elite receiver? Also do you think Denver can contend with the big three in the AFC?
Joe (Huntsville,AL): Who do you like tonight?
Ryan (DET): Will Calvin Johnson end up being a greater threat than Roy Williams in the Detroit offense
JD (Springfield MA): Are 2 Monday night games a possibility on a weekly basis down the line?
Jeremy (Bellevue): Matt FF value question I have Palmer and V Davis going tonight and I am up by 4, he has Gore against AZ. 6 pt tds around. Think I got it in the bag?
JP (NYC): What were your impressions of Eli?
KD (Portsmouth, VA): What's your take on Pittsburgh's run blocking? It seemed a bit inconsistent to me.
Chris (CT): Matt, I thought Portis was the better back yesterday, will he start to take over a bit more or are they set on essentially splitting the carries?
Lee (St. Paul): How can Favre stay healthy with Brandon Jackson missing half of his pass blocking assignments?
Sean (Philly): Matt, what about the other game that is on tonight, two "sleeper" teams on the rise going head to head in a divisional matchup.
James (Wichita): What are your Thougts on A. Peterson yesterday, can we expect more of the same?
Patrick (Seattle): WHYA RE YOU BAD MOUTHING THE SEAHAWKS ALL THE TIME? You made some positive points but all I hear is their starting to age, their window is closing. Last time I checked EVERYONE is starting to age. Peyton is aging, Brett Favre is aging, Cant you ever say anything decent about a team who was decimated by injuries and nearly made it to the big dance?
chris (nj): Many people have said that the Bears do not have any explosive players; do you think that Berrian could/will become such a player? If not, who do you see emerging in the Bears Offense?
Dan (DC): Dallas defense is terrible. They won't win that division.
Nick (PA): Adrian Peterson, Rookie of the year?
SG (Washington): Did the Vikings win teach us anything or are the Falcons just that bad?
Justin ((Kansas)): If the Pack has a top ten d, where do the vikings stand, they were extremely impressive?
Ben (SF): Does it ever bother you when people take objective analysis as a personal attack?
Jack ( Detroit ) : Minnesota or Detroit next week ??
Jon (DC): Rocky McIntosh had 9 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble (not on the sack play), Defensive Player of the Week?
Tom Brady (Patriot Nation): Still no questions on the Patriots? We're alwasys disrespected!
al (DC): pats or SD next week?
Ed (TX): I think romo can be a good qb in the league but i'm still not sold on him being in the elite class....what do you think?
Patrick (Seattle): I see so the feeling aroudn the league is their a good team not a great team. What do they need to be a great team? Secondary? TE upgrade? Your thoughts? What is keeping them from being a great team? Im just wondering what your criteria was for that.
James (Minnesota): The Vikings have a dominant defense (both pass, pass rush, and run) and Tarvaris Jackon is improving by the days, so I don't think the Bears are the NFC North winners this year.
TJ(NY): Doug...look at the Steelers early schedule & tell me they are not 5-0 or 4-1 going into their Bye.
Markail (Detroit, MI): Is it just me or are people not realizing that it's the first week of the season. Settle down people! I bet 90% of people are dropping 1/2 their fantasy team right now based off of one game.
Anthony Henry (Dallas): Hey I thought they brought me in to cover the "big" WR's. Why was I on the other side of the field all night while the abused the smaller Dallas DB's?
PaulieP (Scottsdale): Eric Kasilias was reporting that 50% of playoff teams win in week 1, and 83% of superbowl winners win in week one. So it does kind of match up.
John (det): IS the Lions front 4 for real? They had 3 sacks and 4 FF and int. Are they finally going to produce?
Nik (Wisconsin): After Brandon Jackson's performance (or lack thereof), do the Pack turn to Morency to carry the workload?
Sean (Raleigh, NC): Were the Panthers that good, or the Rams that bad?
Jeremy (Bellevue): Doug the Hawks O is predicated on short passes to its Wr's thus opening up lanes for Aelxander to move the rock. The WRs were bad for the Hawks yesteday, what happened? It seems luck that their D stepped up and they got the W.
Clint (CA): What do you think about the Broncos offense considering they gained 470 yards but only produced 15 pionts?
Carlos (Orlando, FL): My texans won a season opener for the first time in 4 years... how do you like mario williams now?
Teddy (Houston): Texans at Carolina next week, who comes out 2-0???
Danny (Fairfax, VA): PaulieP says 50% of playoff teams win in week 1...don't 50% of ALL teams win in week 1?
Carebear (Fargo, ND): Is it too early for me to get a Tavaris Nation tatto on my lower back?
Jake ( Charlotte ): Hard to beat??? Is that why we were 4-4 at home last year and had previously lost the home opener 3 years in a row?? I agree with your assessment by the way, just wantedto let you know that John Fox's team play better on the road
Daniel (Athens, Ga): Of all the winners, the Cowboys seemed like the big losers yesterday with losing Ferguson. How much is not having a solid NT going to hurt Wade's defense?
Mad Mike (Houston): Any predictions on Houston at Carolina this week? Can Super Mario produce big two games in a row??
Chad (LA): Vernon Davis or Todd Heap? Who has the better game tonight?
Thomas (Charlotte): Prediction for next week? can the titans and jeff fisher do enough to push around the colts and sneak out a win at home? they have played them very tough the last 2 times. They will beat the colts one of the two times this season guaranteed.
