ESPN has a breaking story about how Sean Payton will remain on as the Saints head coach.

So there you folks go. Payton isn't coming to Dallas.

Although, honestly, I'm still unsure how anyone ever thought he would be in the first place.

Some people are actually able to get what they want in life at a regular basis and don't think that everything fails all the time. What I want to know is why people around here always think everything and I mean everything is going to fail.

Payton has history with Dallas and by all accounts his relationship with Benson is on the rocks. Then of course Jerry's plane was spotted in NO. While it looks like he isn't coming we also have the Parcells hiring which is the ultimate fly in the "Jerry will never do that" ointment.

Unless they sign him to a long extension this is good. I'd Rather he be available in a year or two just in case, and I know this is crazy talk, the last 80 games are an accurate sample size of our current staffs coaching ability ....

I'm actually quite encouraged with the idea that he might come over next year when his contract will be expiring and his contract holder doesn't have so much leverage.

You guys go ahead and plan for failure contingencies.

I never realistically thought we would get him.

I also don't think this organization will every win anything of significance given its current structure.

But as a fan, I can hope otherwise.

What's his contract like? Could we maybe get him in a year or two?

Now I agree we would've been much better off with Payton compared to Garrett but I just do not see the obsession over coaches that have won a Superbowl with another team. Historically, Super Bowl winning coaches never work out the second time...they literally have a zero percent success rate.

Best bet is to get someone with a ton to prove from a strong coaching tree. I believe it takes a certain amount of hunger to win a SB and it's hard to replicate that drive with multiple teams. Once you win, your place in history is cemented and you have nothing to prove.

I don't think fans thought it was realistic. I think they were speaking more out of hope.

Jerry was in NO. Benson and Payton have been at odds for over a year now. Payton has a good rapport with the Jones family. Realistic mean it is based on real things. ARe those real or not, Tyke?

What's unrealistic is the blanket dismissal and characterization. People would be better to think in terms probability as physics actually bears out as opposed to binary certainties.

To be honest, I don't see what the big fuss about Sean Payton is.

He's been to ONE Super Bowl, and that a year when the Saints were riding an incredible emotional high after Hurricane Katrina.

The Saints have an offense similar to ours in that it caters to Drew Brees. But for all of Drew Brees' otherworldly numbers, he's only been able to get to the Super Bowl once.

Their defense is a mess, basically placing everything on Brees' shoulders. And the Saints' offense basically shut downs when Brees is not healthy, despite the bevy of running backs they seem to keep on the roster.

Is he better than Garrett? Yes.
But I'm really not all that impressed with Payton.
I'd rather go with a younger, up-and-coming coach after Garrett (which I hope is sooner rather than later).

The whole Sean Payton-to-Dallas thingy has been a hoot for me. It's one thing to watch how some Dallas fans have gotten excited about Payton replacing Garrett. It has been hilarious watching and listening to some Saints fans fretting like nervous bitties over the possibility happening. Listening to Saints fans cry on local sports radio about Payton leaving New Orleans has made my daily commute to work and back home really enjoyable.
