Only fair way to change it in the future is to seed it exactly the same as now - but then if there is a WC/Host match up where the WC team has a better record and beat the Host head to head, then they would host the game (but both teams retain their original seed if they advance). If they have the same record and the WC beat the Host head to head, then they would only swap if the WC beat the Host as a visitor.

the similarities are striking. the cowboys, giants and skins have the worst owners in football. only lurie seems to show any sense. when he screwed the pooch and hired chip kelly, he was quick to realize the error and got rid of chip. jerry has stuck with garrett failure after failure. the giants and skins are going thru coaches at an alarming rate in recent years.

It is ridiculous to even consider changing the rules now. The idea is for the best team to represent their division. Sometimes it plays out like this season.

The same argument could be phrased a different way. I could argue that it’s not “fair” that teams in the strongest divisions have more loses beating up on each other.

NFL has already turned a good product almost unwatchable by tinkering with it too much. We now have obvious catches that are incompletions and pass interference challenges that can’t get overturned even when they look at the replay.

Must be a millennial thing. Change things they do not understand, just to change it, because they think they are always right even though they are so wrong.

Keep it as is. Why even have divisions if winning your division, but you are still out of the playoffs. It is just stupid.
May as well take all the teams and best 12, or bump in to 16, get in. No conferences either.

Because if you take the top 6 or 8 from each conference, someone will the complain, well the 7th best AFC team had a better record than the 6th NFC team, why should be not be in the playoffs.

The Cowboys are the 8th ranked team in the NFC at least until next week (regardless how the three 5-win teams do today) - so it's not completely out of whack.

I remember when the 11–5 Pats missed the playoffs in 2008 due to seeding. Surprised the NFL wasn't up in a roar about that.

Most of the complaints I've heard had to do with home field advantage for the better record, not suggesting division winners not make the playoffs. Like they do in other sports.

If the NFL has a problem with this then they need to change the cause, not the effect. The NFL has too many divisions with too few teams in them, of course this is going to happen from time to time.

But IMO this doesn't happen often enough to be alarmed. Teams with a .500 or less record that make the playoffs have never gone to the Championship anyway. The worst record I can remember making it deep into the playoffs were the '87 Vikings at 8-7.

But like I said, if they want to lessen the probability of a 7-9 or 8-8 team winning the division, change the divisional structure. Change it to something like a 6/5/5 in each conference.

It really doesn't happen often. I think the last time was Seattle at 7-9 hosting the Saints about 10 years ago.

The NFC West, no less. How ironic if one of those teams has to come Dallas.

.What is BSPN worried about?? They can put all their chips on anyone from the East losing first round. Its like they aren't even considered. But it happened this way.

Agree 100%.

But it would be fun seeing one of those losers by chance, making it deep in the playoffs. That's what makes football such an addicting sport.

Because every now and then, the impossible happens.

I’m still holding out hope we’re on of those losers your mention, trying to stay mildly optimistic.

Did anyone really think the NFL would consider changing the playoff rules as a knee jerk reaction to having a weak division?

The Seahawks got into the 2010 (I think?) playoffs with a losing record, and beat a Saints team that no one expected them to have a shot against. That's the game where Marshawn Lynch stiff-armed his way into history, and it set the tone for another 4 or 5 years of Seahawks dominance. Imagine if they had been re-seeded.

No need to change the rules. There is nothing wrong with the system, as is.

Also, guaranteeing that division winners get a playoff berth and a home game, is one of the things that makes divisional matchups so important. There is no way anyone can convince me that it’s in the leagues best interest to make divisional regular season games, less important.

Much to do about nothing.

I want the 3 divisions and 3 wildcards again.

This rewarded a wild card team that played in a difficult division with a home game during the round if they didnt win their division.

I don’t get the complaining.

If I’m a fan of SF/Seattle or Green Bay/Minnesota I’m stoked.

Easy wild card weekend win and get a free pass to the second round.
I think the 2008 Falcons, 2010 Saints, and other teams that had better records to go on the road to play a weaker division winner opponent had that same thought and loss.

I understand what you are saying but there is a reason why there is a high winning percentage for the home team in the playoffs. Sometimes it is field conditions, the refs, crowd and some home cooking that makes a difference between a win and a loss.

If the team with the better record is that much better than the NFC East division winner, then playing on the road shouldn't matter much.

Good.

This isn't some Banana Republic where you change the rules whenever they see fit.

Yea it would be bush league to change the rules 3/4 of the way into the season. I didn’t even realize they could do that.
