Twitter mailbag: If the Cowboys go big in free agency

Todd Archer ESPN Staff Writer

FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys Twitter mailbag is ready.

In it we discuss:

Away we go:

@toddarcher Is there any chance the Cowboys go after a Melvin Ingram? I know they don't like to spend big in free agency. #Cowboysmail

— Derek Major (@djmajor6) February 23, 2017

@toddarcher: There’s always a chance, I presume, but if we take the Cowboys at their word on their approach to free agency, then I would doubt it. Ingram has proven to be a solid pass-rusher the last two seasons after struggling to stay healthy early in his time with the Los Angeles Chargers. (Wow, that’s the first time I typed that. Weird.) He turns 28 in April, so he’s at a good age for a pass-rusher. Here’s an interesting note: he is signed with Roc Nation, the same group that represents Dez Bryant. There’s a good relationship there between the Cowboys and Jay-Z’s people, even though that Bryant deal took some time to get done. I’m not sure if Ingram would fall into the same category as Olivier Vernon last year, but he’s not going to be far off. Next week at the combine, I’ll have a better sense of how things might go in free agency, so check back for some updates. For now, however, I would not bet on Ingram wearing a star on his helmet.

Will the cowboys target desean Jackson? #cowboysmail

@toddarcher: Everything I just said about Ingram holds true for DeSean Jackson. As much as I think he would help the offense in terms of big plays down the field, I don’t know how the Cowboys could afford him. They are so heavily invested on the offense with Bryant, soon to be three offensive linemen and Ezekiel Elliott, that it’s difficult to see them making another big-time investment on offense. That’s why I don’t see Terrance Williams returning, either, and he’ll be a lot cheaper than Jackson. The Cowboys know how dangerous Jackson can be. He still has top-end speed, even though he turns 31 in December. Maybe he could help in the return game, too, but he’s not done much there lately. It would also weaken the Washington Commanders and keep him away from the Philadelphia Eagles. If I’m making a decision here, I’d rather throw money at a defensive player rather than an offensive player in free agency. Jackson, however, could give me some pause, maybe more than other receiver.

@toddarcher What's ur thoughts on back up RBs? Do we keep Morris or McFadden? Or do we pick up Peterson...I'm not a fan of tht though!

I saw this before. I'm torn what to see what we do. I think we go after most our guys and resign them but I have a feeling we could make a splash at de cb or safety. Just how Stephen has said our priority is to fix the defense I take his word over his dads

Stephen Jones was pretty clear about their business model for free agency last season. That's not where they spend the big bucks.

Cowboys stick with their standard FA plans.

Those won't include any of the above named players.

Normally I'd agree with NO to big contract VFA but this year I don't know.

What's up with all of the national writer's and their dumb ideas?

Jackson? Ingram?

I pray we don't throw money at those guys and I don't even see the fit.

They don't have to go big but if they don't bring in a vet DE and DT I know I'll be nervous about what they're doing. I'll still cut some slack. They've earned that lately.

To be fair in this case the writer was just replying to questions that were sent in to #Cowboysmail. So you can, unsurprisingly, blame the team's fans for this one.

I dont get why people here dont like Ingram. Is the misguided belief that he is only a 3-4 player. He played most of his snaps in SD with his hand on the ground.

The Cowboys wont go after him, but I sure as hell would

I like the player a lot. I don't like the $19m price tag he is going to demand. Overall I am ambivalent. If they go for it I could get behind it but if they do not then I won't lose sleep.

The Dak gift gives them one free FA...... I like Ingram or CJones

I want no part of Ingram at $17MM or so a year.

If he were like $10MM a year, maybe. It's not that I don't think Ingram is good, he's a nice player. But he's not a $17MM a year player. He's not Vonn Miller.

19 million for Ingram is hard to believe, but I could see it happening if Oliver is making 17. As much as I like the player, he could wind up being a prime example pf what Stephan wss talking about when he said paying good players elite money

A few reasons.

1) He's going to command Miller and elite DE type of money and I don't think he's that type of player. He's a nice player but he's going to be an overpaid player. I'd rather pay a guy like Sheard or Addison less than $10MM than pay Ingram more than $15MM.

2) As pointed out in another thread, if you look at the total number of snaps played, his sack numbers are nice but not eye popping. Guys like Sheard, Addison and some others were more productive at generating pressure than Ingram was with less plays.

He's a scary signing for me because he's going to get elite money and I don't think you'll ever get consistent elite play like a Miller or other dominant DE/edge players in the league.

Yeah I would be more interested in that second tier of DE. Still going to have to pay them ~$10m but that is a lot more palatable than $19m.

They don't benefit from Dak for another year. Given the total cap hit at QB is going to be high still next season. It's next offseason when we'll see big dollars (largely out of necessity) thrown out there.
