Cowboys fans saddled their squad with a 30-spot free fall, fifth largest among NFL teams. The blame starts with head coach Wade Phillips. Following an embarrassing 34-14 loss to the Rams in Week 7, the former defensive coordinator took over the reins to Big D's D. His charges then missed the postseason after allowing 77 points in the final two games. Not like it would've mattered if the team had reached the post-season. Among coaches who've helmed 100-plus games, Phillips has the highest regular-season winning percentage (.588) of all who have never won a playoff game (he's 0–4). Having the league's sixth-most expensive tickets doesn't help (average cost in 2008: $84.12), especially considering that all five teams that rank higher (Pats, Bucs, Bears, Giants, Jets) have frozen prices for 2009, while Boys fans face a 6.7% bump. It's not the kind of hike football fans in Dallas want to see.

What does "Ultimate Standings" even mean?

And I love how the great new stadium isn't factored into that ticket price increase at all.

Just typical BSPN.

This explains what it is and how they calculate it. Basically it's where each American pro sports team ranks in value to their fans.

And yeah, I can't believe they didn't factor in the new stadium. Notice they ranked "Stadium Experience" at 43.

The method to our madness

How do you calcuate the value of a franchise to it's fans?

The Ultimate Standings measure how much MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL franchises give back to fans for all the time, money and emotion we invest in them. Here's how: Working with Maddock Douglas, a Chicago consulting firm, we polled 1,000 fans across North America to find out what they want most from their favorite teams. Our survey covered 21 topics, from "has strong leader as coach" to "players who act professionally on and off the field" to "provides avenue for fan feedback." Then ESPN.com asked fans to rate their favorite clubs in these categories; we received more than 50,000 responses. We grouped those responses into seven of the eight broad categories listed above. For the eighth category, Bang for the Buck, we examined how efficiently teams convert dollars from fans into on-field wins (regular- and postseason). Fan costs were calculated by researchers at the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon. Finally, we combined each team's scores across all eight categories into one final, weighted score, taking each category's importance from our national poll. (For example, Stadium Experience counts for slightly more than twice as much as Coaching because that's how fans rated the categories.) The result is the only ranking that combines fan perspective with an objective measure of how well teams turn fan dollars into wins.

I didn't even know they were bumping Cowboy ticket prices, that's really giving the fans the shaft. Guess someone has to pay for the stadium.
