ESPN's pre-draft "On the Clock" series takes a look at the Dallas Cowboys. These are roundtable discussions with Mel Kiper, Jr., Trent Dilfer and Chris Mortensen that preview the draft for each team and discuss other issues as well. Mel identifies interior offensive line as the Cowboys' top draft priority, then lists playmaking safety, defensive tackle and running back as others. The good thing for the Cowboys, as the group points out, is that this year's draft is deep in all of those areas, and with a good draft the Cowboys should be able to improve their current roster in a way that impacts the 2013 season.

The discussion then turns to Dallas' new defensive coaches -- coordinator Monte Kiffin and line coach Rod Marinelli. Dilfer oozes respect for both men, having known them from their days in Tampa Bay, and puts forth a belief that Marinelli and Kiffin will make playmakers out of the players already on the Cowboys' defense. He thinks Rob Ryan's defense was "reaction-based" and that the new defensive coaches on the staff are more about forcing the action.

Have to agree with what they said. Need interior OL, DT and safety help. Hope what Dilfer said comes to pass and the defense starts making plays...mainly turnovers.

Mel always gets me raring to go for the draft.

Three weeks away.

If I'm Jerry Jones, having gotten my QB locked in, I would go all-in and even trade future draft picks to take advantage of this year's crop. We either win a SB with Romo, or it could be another decade before we get another good chance. We need to win, and win NOW if we're ever going to. Grab a top OL prospect, find a DT or two to jam the middle, and find a kid who can cover ground at S. Then another OL or good blocking RB who can also pick up a tough yard. Then I'll be secure in the knowledge that Jerry at least gave it a chance. Git 'er done...

I like Dilfer a lot, I usually can't stand Kiper..But can't hardly disagree at all with what he's saying about the Boys...

was a good watch and I agree with most - they're not just a bunch of talking heads like the most of them.

Cowboys are boring though??? I wish....I'd take a boring win over a nail-biter loss any day! Seems to me the Boys over the past 2 years let way too many games that they should have convincingly won get to a a two minute shoot out! That's not boring, that's one the edge of your seat, heart attack!! :laugh2:

I am excited about what could be with Kiffin and Marinelli running our defense. Hope that translates to big plays and turnovers right away but am skeptical that could be achieved in one season. Would think at least 2nd season is when dividends would pay out but hope I'm wrong! Maybe the addition of a hungry, young D-line stud through the draft could help prod a quick change in the defense's attitude and results!

Not really a huge Kiper fan.

Sometimes he does this inverse nostril flare thing like he's trying to make his nose look slimmer after he speaks. I don't know why but it bugs the hell out of me and most of the time in their back-and-forth conversations I can't quit thinking of how weird it looks and I miss the discussion.

I was never a Kiper fan until his radio show, he's really good on there, and he's so much better than McShay I think he's mellowed a bit over the years.
