ESPN Watkins: Cowboys sign another defensive lineman; two waived

SAN ANTONIO -- The Cowboys, with a shortage of healthy defensive linemen, signed Jimmy Saddler-McQueen from Texas A&M Kingsville on Thursday morning.

To make room for Saddler-McQueen the Cowboys released lineman Lorenzo Washington, who battled hamstring injuries the last few days of training camp.

Saddler-McQueen is 6-3, 296 pounds and had a 5.07 40-yard dash time at his pro day.

The Houston native signed with the Chicago Bears but was released this spring.

In his senior season at Kingsville, Saddler-McQueen battled injuries leading to just 30 tackles including six for loss. As a junior, Saddler-McQueen was the Lone Star Conference co-defensive lineman of the year.

The Cowboys have 10 defensive linemen on the roster, yet there are injuries to Sean Lissemore (groin), Josh Brent (hand) and Jason Hatcher (elbow) that has forced coach Wade Phillips to juggle some snap counts for several players.

Hatcher and Brent could return this weekend from their injuries.

To make room the team released defensive end Lorenzo Washington and kicker/punter Delbert Alvarado. Washington, an undrafted rookie from Alabama, had been unable to practice all camp because of a hamstring injury. Alvarado was never serious competition for kicker David Buehler or punter Mat McBriar.

I never understood why they even bring these guys in if they never had a shot to make the team anyways

I guess you can't prove yourself if you can't play, but Alexander was one of the undrafted guys after the draft that I was interested in.

Wow, Washington was singled out by Wade in rookie camp as looking real good, I thought he might be in the mix ... oh well.

Probably an OK guy, but not worth waiting through his injury to keep him.

Camp bodies.

They don't want the regular punter getting a dead-leg from having to perform every rep.

Much the same way that they bring in an extra QB so that their regular group wouln't get too fatigued having to make all of the throws required in practice.

They are brought in for practice reps.

They are brought in so you don't wear out your vets. With all the injuries on the D-line it becomes hard to run practice when all your linemen are winded from extended work.

Bottom line is it dose not matter how you get your shot as long as you make good on the opportunities you get.

If you get on a roster you have a shot.
It might be as an extreme long shot but it is a shot nonetheless.

It's not like the team can just draw up their projected 53 and tell everyone else to get lost.

Well it can be said that Romo and Austin were not brought in after Training Camp started to facilitate practice reps due to injuries at there respective positions. But like you said even a camp body can earn a roster spot if they ball out!

Some of the younger pups don't realize that players from lower division schools continually come from 'no-where' to become real NFL stars. This Division II defensive tackle came for Kingsville (A&M-Kingsville). That school only has two Hall of Famers: Eugene Upshaw and more recently another defensive tackle - John Randle. Oh yea, yet another....hear of Daryll Green?
