IRVING -- It doesn't look good for tight end Martellus Bennett (concussion) or safety Ken Hamlin (ankle) for Sunday. Bennett saw a specialist recently, passed a baseline test, but still isn't feeling good.

"That's a main concern," coach Wade Phillips said.

The Cowboys have used three tight end sets, Jason Witten, John Phillips and Bennett, at times this season. With Bennett out, the Cowboys have just two tight ends, but Phillips said guard/center Cory Procter could come in as a blocking fullback/tight end. Bennett's absence does limit the number of two-tight end sets the Cowboys employ.

Romo has completed 62.7 percent of his passes in two-tight end sets, tied for 18th in the league. He's tied for sixth with 22 first down plays. He's only attempted seven passes out of a three tight end set this year.

Hamlin, who has missed the last three games, has been replaced by Alan Ball. Ball has picked up six tackles and two pass breakups with Hamlin out.

Phillips said kicker Nick Folk was impressive at practice and made a 56-yarder at the end of the special teams period at Cowboys Stadium. He also said quarterback Tony Romo did the holding and Folk had no issues making all of his field goals.

On the year, the Cowboys are averaging 21.3 yards per kick return. Five different players have returned a kick. On the year, Felix Jones is tied for 29th in returns with a 21 yards per kick average. Jones averaged 21 yards a return last year.
In last Sunday's game at the Giants, Jones had a 42 yard return in the fourth quarter called back due to a holding call on Victor Butler.

"We're looking for better things on our kick returns," Phillips said. "Felix, he burst out of there this time, and I think he's getting a better feel for it. We like his chance to do that, he's the guy on the team that can really make that kind of play at that position."

We saw wide receiver Miles Austin field a kick during practice, but Phillips is still committed to Jones and Kevin Ogletree.

The last two days, the Cowboys practiced indoors. Wednesday at Southlake Carroll High School and Thursday at Cowboys Stadium. The cold weather forced the team indoors. Phillips said he wanted his team to work in near perfect conditions to get ready for San Diego game on Sunday. He said the team might practice at Valley Ranch on Friday.

Is a 3 TE set so crucial to our offense that we need to use Proctor as a H-Back? Bennett hurt.......

Anybody having second thoughts about turning down the Bengal's offer of a 1st rounder for Bennett???

I have to admit, after thinking about it...................I would have traded him.

You really think Bennett is going to turn into a star player for us???

Even with all of his dropped passes???

Yes.

Yes..

The guy is a freak and has nothing but upside. It just so happens he plays behind one of the greatest TE's in the game so his time will be limited which is the only thing keeping him from developing.

It just seems like he could be used more than what he is, especially down around the goalline. He should be a nightmare to cover with his size and athleticism, but it just hasnt materialized this year.

Could be Garrett not knowing how to use our weapons correctly.

Interesting. Talk about a power running formation.

Proctor is powerless.

:laugh2: As an offensive lineman, I completely agree. But as a FB or TE (or HB), he's a load.
