OK, we finally have something to work with. It's ridiculous to move a team up or down based on the preseason -- unless there are major injuries involved. Now that we've seen all four Beast teams in action, let's see where they ended up. And yes, this is the part where I'm able to second-guess my colleagues. Here's where the Beast teams are ranked:
3. Giants: Not a lot to complain about here, but I would have moved them ahead of the unbelievably lucky Patriots. Oh, so you make your own luck? Whatever! One horrible decision cost the Bills an upset win. By the way, does Dick Jauron have a future in the funeral home business? He just seems to have the perfect demeanor.
4. Eagles: That seems about right to me. Winston Justice is your right tackle and you're unsettled at quarterback for a week or two. But still, that defense looked great against Jake Delhomme and the Panthers. AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky and The Professor, John Clayton, both ranked the Eagles sixth. Clayton based this on a salary-cap rule that was passed in the offseason of '01.
13. Cowboys: They rose four spots in the power rankings, which is a pretty significant leap. They would've been higher but Kuharsky had them at No. 17. Please feel free to leave your comments on Paul's AFC South blog.
20. Commanders: Skins fans, you can thank The Professor for saving you guys from an all-out free fall. He looked past that ragged performance against the Giants -- and ranked the Commanders No. 16. I'm planning to call John later and ask him about this ranking. There's an outside shot he doesn't take that call.
Overall, Clayton was bullish on the Beast, ranking the best division in football an average of 9.75. Kuharsky was the least impressed with an 11.5. After basically sitting out Week 1, Chadiha came back strong in Week 2, dropping the Commanders five spots following their loss to the Giants.
Clayton is bullish on the Cowboys, moving them up five whole spots after the win over the Bucs. The great Mike Sando has created several Excel files and three or four databases for you to explore. Sando and I continue to share a love for numbers that is unrivaled in our profession.
Thanks for your patronage. We'll be back with more at a later date. Oh, and one more thing: I'm about to go through the mailbag. Feel free to drop me a note. All my best during these difficult times.
